Description
Here is the first of three tutorials I took pictures for a few days ago at school. This one is about how to pincurl your hair in preparation for putting on a wig. This is the longest of the three, but by far, the most important one to know. I know there are many people out there who think that you do not need to do this to your hair, but I've found that you really, really need to do this in order to have a wig that doesn't *look* like a wig when you're wearing it, and also so that it doesn't fall off.
But, on the plus side, the pincurls are very simple to do with a bit of practice!
A thank you goes out to ~MedeaHiasobi for helping me with this (it's her hands with blue fingernails you see in the pictures

Oh! That's not too bad - you buy toupee clips from somewhere like Sally's Beauty Supply, put those where those "important" pincurls would be, put your wigcap on, and pin into those toupee clips instead of the pincurls It will hold everything in place!

Hehe, no problem! Yeah, this definitely helps keep wigs on decently, and get all of your hair to compact nicely ~ it just takes forever if your hair is as long as mine is now

^^ My hair's shoulder length. How long IS yours? Lol I'll probably be cutting it again soon because I'm redoing Ritsuka for a photoshoot and I like the style - that would definitely make it easier to fit a wig on afterwards XD
...My previous wig kept nearly falling off, now I know why

taeliac In reply to hikaraseru [2008-05-15 15:27:01 +0000 UTC]
Mine is currently down to my shoulderblades in the back, so I'll definitely have to do the two french braids and then tuck them underneath - unless I can't find anyone to french braid my hair!
Shorter hair is definitely a lot nicer for wigs, but having it longer does give more for the wig to hold onto - so, if it's a super heavy wig, the more hair will give it more to hold onto, and (hopefully) less of a headache from it pulling on you! My friend recently did this costume - [link] - and her hair is as long as mine, and the wig was actually pretty comfy for the whole day... I believe she even took a nap in it

Lol your friend slept in that XDXDXD well I see how it acts like a pillow though XD;;;;;
And yeah that's true too...^_______^ I guess having long or short hair works too, as long as you know how to work the wig. Thanks for the tip!

those little pincurls actually look like they could be kinda cute for a super-short 'do (of course properly decorated with cute barettes )

taeliac In reply to VTPPGLVR [2008-03-23 22:22:49 +0000 UTC]
Oh! They definitely are really cute to do, if you have shoulder-length or shorter hair especially, but longer will just make great waves (especially if you do the larger pin-curls) - so 50's and cute!

moonbabe1989 [2008-03-18 02:32:28 +0000 UTC]
can you do this to make your hair curly if you dont like using curlers or a curling iron? I heard this is what they did back in the day...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to moonbabe1989 [2008-03-18 04:17:30 +0000 UTC]
Yes! You definitely can - it's so cute, and pretty! And, if you're good about it, you can do that 40's/50's wave (called a finger wave) using pincurls, too, but it's a little tricky (I've only done it on a wig before )
So, yes, definitely do so! It's really cute to do (if your hair holds a curl at least) Some light-weight gel is a must - hairspray and other gels just weigh it down too much, so a light spray-in gel is what's best to use to get the style to keep.

I'm gonna have to try it now lol I really hope it works cause my hair really doesnt hold any kind of curl, its way too straight, but I wanna try anways. I'll do the spray-in gel thing cause I already have some lol and it was expensive too, so I might as well use it! Thanks

LilleKraakeLunde [2008-03-02 09:04:10 +0000 UTC]
Aha! I always used the Princess Anne you mentioned (two French braids on each side of the head, crossed and pinned), but my hair is so bulky, it makes the wig look a little wonky sometimes. I'm going to try this and see if it works better, thanks!

taeliac In reply to VasyaSolnyshko [2008-01-27 19:52:03 +0000 UTC]
Usually, we just pin them back with bobbi pins (nubby side down, just like the other) - the wig cap pulls most of them back, but it is just to be sure. If you have long bangs, like I do, you can just pincurl them a little bit (using one finger) or just pull them back with the wig cap, too, if you're super lazy
That's a good point, though - I'll be sure to add that into future reiterations of this

That's great. o.o I will most likely need this soon, since I plan on cosplaying a lot.
But since my hair is really long, I might have to french braid it instead. And I'm afraid I didn't quite get that part.... ^^'

taeliac In reply to Komori-san [2007-09-30 14:47:03 +0000 UTC]
Ya! The french braiding is kinda a secondary piece - I need to explain that a bit better
What you do is put a french braid on each side towards the back (right and left), starting as high as possible (just to hold the most hair). You'll wind up with two braided tails. Take those, and cross them under the back of your head, in kind of a "U" shape. Pin those in place, and be sure they're under the wig cap.
I hope that helps! I didn't know anyone with long enough hair to illustrate that - usually, we only french braid people's hair when you're like one of our actresses and have hair down to her butt XP Otherwise, pincurls will work, you just may have to do more of them!
Let me know if you get stuck at all, and for sure, don't wait until the convention to practice - it's definitely something easier to get frustrated with at home, when you're not under the additional pressure (I made that mistake last year -- I had only done this to other people, not myself, and I only had and hour and a half to get into my whole Victorian costume It was not good)

Komori-san In reply to taeliac [2007-09-30 14:57:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that helped a lot. Thank you.
I really should practise soon... I really suck at braiding and stuff like that. ^^' Or, since I couldn't go to any conventions alone(I'm too young), I could make someone from our group with more skills do that?
I think it might be easier to do that to other people instead of messing with your own hair?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to Komori-san [2007-10-01 23:25:12 +0000 UTC]
Oh! For sure, of you know someone who will be there with you at conventions, then get them practicing doing it for you - it is significantly easier to do it when you can look down on someone elses head
Plus, your arms won't get tired!!
