Description
Since I was making one for my newly remade Kotoko cosplay, I thought I'd take pictures as I go, because I've heard from a few people that they don't know how to make these pre-tied obi's, like you can purchase to wear with yukata and komon in Japan. All of this is my own experimentation on how to do it, I do not know if it is the same as how they do it in Japan. I looked at as many pictures as I could find of one's you can purchase, and built this idea from that.
If you're having problems with getting it stiff enough, you're not using heavy enough interfacing! Add another layer on the other side, or go get yourself some heavier, collar weight interfacing.
Again, wiring this bow will make it look like poo ~ I developed this method so that you don't need wire (except in very rare circumstances, like bat-wing shaped bows) to get this to keep it's shape...
I do not have the information on how to make the sash in this, so I'll summarize them here:
- Take two strips of fabric, 2x the width you'd like the finished sash to be (I choose a 5" wide sash, so I cut two strips 10" wide). Add 1" seam allowance.
-- Ex: So, I cut 2 strips 11" by the width of the fabric (usually 45" or 60")
- Sew up the ends, making one really long sash
- Sew it into a tube, with right sides together
- Turn the tube right-side out
- Press
- Finish the edges of the sash, usually by tucking in the raw edges and pressing
You then take that sash and wrap it around your body usually 2-3 times, tucking the end in where you want the bow to be (this may take a few tries to get it placed right - I had to redo mine 3 times before I wound up with the edge in the front, to tuck in).
Let me know if this helps you out! I hope it does, because it's a lot easier to do than I had expected it would be!
Please do not redistribute this without asking me first! I want to know what sites these appear on!

I second the comment mentioning how helpful this is. I am planning on making a "maid" type cosplay for a con during the summer and I spent a good hour trying to find a "perfect dress bow" tutorial. I just happen to come across your dA page again, for another tutorial. And here this bow tutorial is! And it looks too easy!
Thank you for providing even minor detail tutorials like these on your own time. I needed all the help I can get! You helped me!

Oh! I'm so sorry! I hadn't even thought of that!! Sorry!!
When something has the single ' after it, it means foot, and the " means inches! I'll try to go in and revise a lot of these to have the cm measurements in it, too, just because

awsome cosplay at the end! really clean-cut!
but this method... could it be used for a maids dress?

taeliac In reply to Lame-Ino-Girl [2009-10-12 18:32:10 +0000 UTC]
It could be used for anything you just need to plop a huge bow on It doesn't need to be the slide-in type, you can have it on it's own sash separately, or have it just permanently sewn to the back of a dress or something like that, or use snaps to put it in place if you're doing a Sailor Moon type thing

Thanks for this tutorial! I just used it yesterday to make the bow for my yukata, since the bow the pattern provided looked like, in your words, poop. Also, that looks like a fabulous Kotoko costume there at the end!

Great tutorial! I found this last summer before I had an account and planned/still plan on doing it for the yukata my friend brought me from Japan. Figured I'd stop back and say thanks. I'll put it up and send you a link if I ever get around to making it. At this point, I'm leaning toward just buying one though because my sewing experience is limited to one shrug, one skirt, two pairs of PJ pants and lots of counted cross stitch.
Thanks though, I'll let you know if I get to it!

This is going to help me quite a bit. I need to make my own obi seeing as finding one in a color and pattern that matches my yukata is proving to be impossible. You totally saved me with having to wear a normal dress to the ball at my next con haha

I'll post pictures if I manage to get a hang of sewing enough to do something.
Nevertheless.

Oh! I'm so happy to hear that it's that helpful! I love making bows like this, and after finding so many people that asked how to do it, I had to do a tutorial for them
They're really handy (working on a Sailor Mars outfit now for a friend, using the bows, and it's awesome with those, too
)
I would love to see pictures if you do post it, but if the sewing is giving you trouble, feel free to ask - I'll do what i can to help

tswanArt [2009-01-29 21:48:41 +0000 UTC]
does the sash/obi open up to get it on or is it
tied somewhere?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to tswanArt [2009-01-30 15:07:01 +0000 UTC]
It just wraps on - traditional Japanese pre-tied obi just have the sash wrap around your body a couple of time (hence it's so long) and you tuck the end in in the back, and then slide the bow over it.
You could definitely add hooks or snaps if you wanted, instead, it just doesn't allow it be free-sized then~
