Description Since I was making one for my newly remade Kotoko cosplay, I thought I'd take pictures as I go, because I've heard from a few people that they don't know how to make these pre-tied obi's, like you can purchase to wear with yukata and komon in Japan.

All of this is my own experimentation on how to do it, I do not know if it is the same as how they do it in Japan. I looked at as many pictures as I could find of one's you can purchase, and built this idea from that.

You don't need to wire this bow! If you do, it will usually turn out looking like poop!

If you're having problems with getting it stiff enough, you're not using heavy enough interfacing! Add another layer on the other side, or go get yourself some heavier, collar weight interfacing.

Again, wiring this bow will make it look like poo ~ I developed this method so that you don't need wire (except in very rare circumstances, like bat-wing shaped bows) to get this to keep it's shape...

I do not have the information on how to make the sash in this, so I'll summarize them here:

- Take two strips of fabric, 2x the width you'd like the finished sash to be (I choose a 5" wide sash, so I cut two strips 10" wide). Add 1" seam allowance.
-- Ex: So, I cut 2 strips 11" by the width of the fabric (usually 45" or 60")
- Sew up the ends, making one really long sash
- Sew it into a tube, with right sides together
- Turn the tube right-side out
- Press
- Finish the edges of the sash, usually by tucking in the raw edges and pressing

You then take that sash and wrap it around your body usually 2-3 times, tucking the end in where you want the bow to be (this may take a few tries to get it placed right - I had to redo mine 3 times before I wound up with the edge in the front, to tuck in).

Let me know if this helps you out! I hope it does, because it's a lot easier to do than I had expected it would be!

Please do not redistribute this without asking me first! I want to know what sites these appear on!

this is what i need right now!

i've read that part with a sash and still can't understand it....

by the way the sides of a knot. have you done something with that piece of fabric to make them look smooth? because as i know fabric's side doesn't always look nice and trimly when you cut a piece off...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to SilenceInSilver [2008-05-03 23:57:28 +0000 UTC]

Hooray!! I'm glad!

The sash is basically just one long strip of fabric, folded in half, and then sewn closed, then you turn it right side out - you want to make sure it can wrap around you at least twice, though, for the extra support. Use a heavier fabric, too, or interface it if it's lighter and prone to collapsing - it keeps everything up

As for the trimming, it's just more of figuring out what works for your fabric, I'm sorry to say

Oh wow! I was actually fretting over how to make a bow for a school uniform cosplay, and I think the concept for this is going to be really helpful!! Thank yoU!

taeliac In reply to chibifiedkitsunes [2008-03-27 03:56:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh awesome!! I'm glad it would be useful It is definitely an easy way, and if it doesn't need to slide into the obi, you can easily sew snaps on it instead of using the wire mentioned in the tutorial - just sew a snap on the outfit wherever you want the bow to go, and the matching one on the bow itself, or you could just sew the bow right on!

A cross dressing version of Tobi. Boredom and a slight know how of sewing played into that along with friends who have never seen me in anything but jeans, who are also cosplaying from Naruto.

Why not?

what fabric are you using here?

taeliac In reply to charneh [2008-01-30 13:03:37 +0000 UTC]

For this one, I was using a heavier cotton trigger cloth, but I've done many of them out of regular cotton to (almost all of my wa-loli outfits have cotton or cotton/poly broadcloth bows)

sceneshock In reply to ??? [2007-12-30 02:50:59 +0000 UTC]

I just happen to stumble across this tutorial and I was wondering when shopping for fabric to make the belt and boy how much would you suggest?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to sceneshock [2007-12-30 04:51:09 +0000 UTC]

Hrm... it kind of depends on how large you are, and how long you want to make the tails, and the bow, etc... but usually, I buy 2.5-3 yards of fabric (hehe, I just bought some today, as a matter of fact...)

I do have a bad habit of overbuying fabric, though, so if you're really careful and plan it all out ahead of time, you can use 1.5 yards or so You could even use a different fabric for the underside of the obi sash, and whatnot, if you run out of it

Have you ever hear of the series Genshiken? It's a little known costume from that series that's only shown once on the cover of the third manga volume worn by two different characters (one on the front cover and one on the back cover). Kinda hard to explain, you'd need to know the series well to get it.

Thanks again for the great tutorial.
