Description Since I was making one for my newly remade Kotoko cosplay, I thought I'd take pictures as I go, because I've heard from a few people that they don't know how to make these pre-tied obi's, like you can purchase to wear with yukata and komon in Japan.

All of this is my own experimentation on how to do it, I do not know if it is the same as how they do it in Japan. I looked at as many pictures as I could find of one's you can purchase, and built this idea from that.

You don't need to wire this bow! If you do, it will usually turn out looking like poop!

If you're having problems with getting it stiff enough, you're not using heavy enough interfacing! Add another layer on the other side, or go get yourself some heavier, collar weight interfacing.

Again, wiring this bow will make it look like poo ~ I developed this method so that you don't need wire (except in very rare circumstances, like bat-wing shaped bows) to get this to keep it's shape...

I do not have the information on how to make the sash in this, so I'll summarize them here:

- Take two strips of fabric, 2x the width you'd like the finished sash to be (I choose a 5" wide sash, so I cut two strips 10" wide). Add 1" seam allowance.
-- Ex: So, I cut 2 strips 11" by the width of the fabric (usually 45" or 60")
- Sew up the ends, making one really long sash
- Sew it into a tube, with right sides together
- Turn the tube right-side out
- Press
- Finish the edges of the sash, usually by tucking in the raw edges and pressing

You then take that sash and wrap it around your body usually 2-3 times, tucking the end in where you want the bow to be (this may take a few tries to get it placed right - I had to redo mine 3 times before I wound up with the edge in the front, to tuck in).

Let me know if this helps you out! I hope it does, because it's a lot easier to do than I had expected it would be!

Please do not redistribute this without asking me first! I want to know what sites these appear on!

Hey!! I finally got to use this tutorial for my cosplay of Atashi from Chobits!! [link]
I would be greatful if you gave me a quick critiquing (sorry if its a bit hard to see )
Thanks so much for this great tutorial (and believe me, I'll be using it again)

Heeeey, I finally used your tutorial! You can see the full thing on my page, but I don't have a pic of the bow >.>

What I did was use a a layer of denim instead, but that didn't work, I should have used two. On the "obi" I used 2 layers of denim and overlapped them, so there was 4 in some places and that worked great...Also, I just stripped copper wire because my dad is an Electrician so it's what we had, and it worked.

One thing that I actually though you had in the tutorial was putting metal in the edges of the bow so it doesn't fold over, and you didn't, but I still did it and hot-glued the fabric shut and it worked surprisingly well...

Just thought I would let you know I used this. I was making a costume for a friends child, and I needed to know how to make an obi. Helped a TON! I would rec omened it to just about anyone.

Ah! That is so awesome!! I love that manga so much, and you did a fantastic job on the outfit

How did you do the awesome wrist thing? The big white one? I haven't done much with props like that, and it looks so amazing!

There it is, the old one got deleted (thank you DA...)

Oh, I made it with craft foam, though I only got hold of a thinner and more breakable kind so I made it more durable with various plastic items in my home.
The white thing is made of the lid of this [link]

It was so much fun to do the props! Sewing the dress on the other hand...

Oi - this would have been infinitely helpful while I was making my Summoner Yuna costume!
You might strangle me with that wire if you saw my obi - made with paper-thin fabric wrapped around cardboard. XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to TutorialCollect [2007-09-11 17:02:03 +0000 UTC]

I probably wouldn't have strangled you! I'm not that bad - usually, I get really annoyed by people who come up and say how much better they are than other people, and I see stuff like that XP

Otherwise, ya know, whatever works The nice thing about things like that obi is that you can always go back and remake it if you'd like

Hopefully, you'll be able to find some other use for the tutorial

TutorialCollect In reply to taeliac [2007-09-12 00:04:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha. XD In my defense, I only had 3 days to make the entire costume, and I am no where in the vicinity of being a seamstress.
And it was just for halloween. I'd be way too self-conscious wearing a costume I made to a convention, since I know how much work other people put into theirs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to TutorialCollect [2007-09-13 19:07:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow! I'm amazed you pulled anything off in that short of time - that's quite a feat!! I think the quickest I've done one recently has been two weeks, and I was so disappointed in how it turned out

You definitely should try wearing one to a convention! It's fun - it's just those people who have way too big of ego's that get on my nerves more than anything. Everyone puts effort into what they're wearing, even if someone else made it (they needed to come up with the money some how, didn't they?), so most of the time, everyone is quite nice to everyone else.

You just get that one jerk XP

Are you doing somthing fun for Halloween this year?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TutorialCollect In reply to taeliac [2007-09-19 17:47:18 +0000 UTC]

I wish! I absolutely love Halloween, but it seems like everyone always thinks I'm a 'tard for wanted to do something. I went trick-or-treating with some friends my age when I was 19, and our varying responses went from "You guys look so cute!" to angry, grumbling people who grudgingly gave us one piece of candy. I guess they thought we were trying to take advantage of the kid's candy or something, but I just really like dressing up.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to TutorialCollect [2007-09-22 19:19:40 +0000 UTC]

I've now been assigned to hand out the candy in costume, since my mother thinks it's riddiculous to go walking around in a costume (but, she finds it perfectly fine to walk down to the park with me in a crazy Victorian dress with me XP)

No, I'm sorry I don't have any more at the moment - I was working on one, but I never got to finish it, because it became confusing (and wrong XP - I had to throw out the one I was working on for the tutorial!)

There are a couple of good patterns out there on kimono, though -

It's a wonderful tutorial! I like to cosplay characters from historical periods a lot because those are the type of anime and manga I am attracted to, so I am sure this will be useful if ever I get around to another Peacemaker Kurogane or Rurouni Kenshin cosplay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Kyuriko [2007-07-25 01:49:52 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, yes! You can use this for a lot of characters in Kenshin!

I believe it's pretty much the same concept if you need to do a different obi style, but I'm hoping to get to try that myself soon~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyuriko In reply to taeliac [2007-07-25 23:29:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think the only difference would be in how you tied the actual bow. Now I'm tempted to get back into making kimono again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Kyuriko [2007-07-26 17:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Why not? Ther'es so much pretty fabric out there, you never know what awesomeness you'd find!

I keep getting tempted to buy rolls of kimono silk, and then I think "am I really going to get to do this any time soon?"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyuriko In reply to taeliac [2007-07-27 01:06:32 +0000 UTC]

And kimono silk is pretty expensive fabric to buy too. (._.) That's why I prefer to make yukata because they're cotton… XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Kyuriko [2007-07-27 01:07:48 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! And there are some really, really pretty fabrics that work wonderfully for them out there (even at JoAnns' surprisingly )

You need to make more ^_______^
