That's what bugs me. Β They say at the very end that there's no fish in the ocean, yet anyone who played the game knows that's completely false because you can't sail for more than five minutes without getting attacked by something.

Yep! This is most likely because they are actually liquid creatures thus water makes them dissolve. (plus, it's a game. They needed a reason why you can't go beyond stage boundaries)

They're bodies are mostly composed of fluid, so water, or in the game's case, foreign-colored ink, will cause them to forcefully lose their form, hence why even though they "die" in Turf Wars, they just respawn.
