Description Fall 2004, Oil Pastel on Sketch Paper

Oil pastels float in limbo somewhere between drawing and painting. I think the way I use them leans closer to painting, even if you "draw" with them, so I stuck this tutorial under that heading. There's no right or wrong way to use oil pastels, but the methods I've come up with on my own are fast, forgiving, and I like the results. I'll do another tutorial sometime about painting water, and how to make textures, etc.

Oh ok, thanks!

Oh yeah, I looked back at that link you showed me, and I think he just used regular dry pastels.

This is really interesting. I love oil pastels and all the messiness they produce.

SWEET. This is cool, thanks for posting this great tutorial-- on OIL PASTELS! (not many people do. -.-) I'll definitely try some of the techniques in my next attempt at oil pastels. Maybe later on tonight.

hey thanks. i've just started trying to experiment with pastels. my general media of choice have been pens and ink or a camera and there has been little/no depth in my pastel/color attempts (in my gallery). these tips will help.

i think that i could really benefit from some tips. . . would you be willing to comment on "war torn"? (its in my gallery- i haven't figured out how to make those link thingies yet ) working in color is a difficult transition for me (i don't even wear many colors- black, olive-sage greens, browns and gray) but i find the vibrancy of pastels very enchanting. . .
