Description Fall 2004, Oil Pastel on Sketch Paper

Oil pastels float in limbo somewhere between drawing and painting. I think the way I use them leans closer to painting, even if you "draw" with them, so I stuck this tutorial under that heading. There's no right or wrong way to use oil pastels, but the methods I've come up with on my own are fast, forgiving, and I like the results. I'll do another tutorial sometime about painting water, and how to make textures, etc.

Thanks so much for this tutorial~! I just got my oil pastels recently, but I was a bit scared to use them (since, well, you got to admit they do run out quickly... I didn't want to waste them ) But, now I'm pretty excited to use them after reading about your techniques. Thanks again!

Oh, this is great I am so quick to give up when something doesn't look good right away... at step 2 I was thinking 'where on earth is this going' only to scroll down and find it it turns into this wonderful piece of art. I really must try and be more patient :<

you mean, under appreciated? It depends on the artist. I've seen oil pastels at Mass MoCA. They're new, and there's the problem of conserving the work, but other than that, do something nice enough and people will appreciate it.

i was doing some art work for an assignment at uni an it meant illustrating onto wood, i stressed that id love to do it with oil pastels because there awesome and i can use them. the first response i got from a tutor was."you mean oil paint." i said no pastel. she replied then use acrylic because there better. I said that i prefer pastel because i can use them almost like a pencil and can get much better results. whilst i was saying this she was getting acrylics and brushes she waked up to me put the stuff down and flatly said... your doing it wrong use acrylic!

All pastels are delicate. One big issue with all art making is longevity. I'm not certain just how archival oil pastels are. The surface scratches easily, which is why I usually put any finished work in a glass frame - with enough paper mats to keep the work from touching the glass - the glass will stick to the work, pulling off color.

Wooden panels themselves can be susceptible to worms and change in humidity. Acrylic, though, is a much stronger, bonding, elastic medium. It's strong enough to stick to just about anything without cracking. I agree with your professor, it just seems she didn't explain herself so well.

sonia555 [2009-10-23 20:42:21 +0000 UTC]

So, basically, oil pastels are a lot about layering the colors correctly?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TArthurSmith In reply to sonia555 [2009-10-24 07:20:48 +0000 UTC]

right. They're about layering with a light and careful touch. You want to press lightly in some places and harder in others, as you go. Don't use the second color to obliterate the first.

That's amazing! You make it look almost realisitic.
I asked because I draw in a "manga" style (I don't know what I'd call it), and I was wondering how I would about coloring in some of my work in pastel.
I was wondering if you could give me any tips on how to color this one in pastel: [link]

Ji... eh... Well... IΒ΄m not sure about that. I have finished it and... itΒ΄s the first in which seriously I worked (about the technique). And I love the background but the characters... eh... not at all... is because I couldnΒ΄t make the little tiny details (something that i will consider to the future paint).

Although I got the weird idea of record the steps. I going to edit it tonight and maybe... (not sure) post it but in YouTube, later. Would you like to send you a note when it is ready?

Sorry about my lack of redact skills. Have a nice day!!

Thanks! I have a box of dry pastels (and am too poor to buy the oils right now!), so I did two practice sketches with those today. If you have time I'd love a crit! (and be vicious!)

By any chance, do you know how to make an oil pastel picture like these?--> [link]

TArthurSmith In reply to Awitan [2008-09-01 19:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thanks for the link, those are great pastels! I think there's not much secret to drawing like that. He's just using straight pastels on paper, with simple, loose, straight strokes and a couple scribbles. What stands out to me is how easily the colors rest on top of each other without mixing - this usually has to do with using an oily color over a thicker, drier one. With oil pastels, the biggest difference is made by the brand you buy. Beyond that, the guy is a master of light, perspective, etc. Try several brands and experiment, and don't buy any of the cheap, crappy ones. Do that, and just draw like crazy, that's my advice.

Oh, you're welcome. Thanks so much for the tips.

That's what I wondered about. The colors didn't blend! I also have to work on lighting, and hopefully get to his master level.

What brand do you use or recommend?
