Um, is the material for these suits SUPER expensive??

TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to SweetNymphy [2013-12-07 18:00:09 +0000 UTC]
Not entirely the most costly items will be fur and foam. Β And that is at about 25 $ a yard for fur. Β

I really want to make a fursuit but ive seen pictures with the head covered in duct tape? And do you have to sew the fabric onto the head or can you just glue it?(like hot glue gun?)
π: 0 β©: 1
TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to EmSquirt [2012-07-26 13:40:02 +0000 UTC]
You can do either sewing or glueing. People sew the fur together because it gives the fur a "seamless" look like on a real animals head. However, if you are careful enough with the hot glue gun you can just glue the fur on. Most people don't just glue the fur because it can easily be pulled off, and requires much more matinee care than sewn heads.
The duct tape is used for making the pattern to fur the head. You place duct tape on the foam base, draw your pattern on the tape (i.e. markings, colors, etc.) and then you cut it off the foam (without taking off the foam with it) or whatever other method you used to make the head base, like resin. you then take your tape pieces and use them to trace onto the fur to cut out and sew/glue onto the head.

I really want to eventually make my own fursuit, but does it take a lot of sewing? If it does I probably won't be able to because A I can't really sew and B fabric is extremely expensive and hard to find where I live (Canada).
π: 0 β©: 1
TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to Suikakitten [2012-06-24 13:45:15 +0000 UTC]
There is a lot of sewing. But if you are careful enough you could glue all of the seams on the head. (don't do this for a bodysuit) you would have to be very careful about not letting glue show through but that is an option.
As far as fur you may be able to order online. I do believe fabric.com ships to Canada. (if I'm wrong I'm so sorry. -_-)

Suikakitten In reply to TearsOfFallenAngels [2012-06-24 16:55:42 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, the sewing part only worries me because I don't have a pattern. Without a pattern i might make it too big or too small or it might not fit together. Really that is my issue, I am scared of making it improperly. Thank you for the advice about the fabric as well!

TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to Suikakitten [2012-06-24 17:12:23 +0000 UTC]
Well what you can do when you make a pattern to fur it is you can lay tape over the foam and then cut it off to use for your pattern, that way you have a perfect fit! ^^

One more question, where would I get upholstery foam?
π: 0 β©: 2
TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to Suikakitten [2012-06-24 20:21:11 +0000 UTC]
Any arts and craft store should be good place to get it. I'm not sure what stores you have in Canada, but in America hobby lobby and Joanns are great places that carry. If you can't find a store you can order online pretty cheap.

Wow, I just looked at material for a furry suit and my estimation on how much it would cost is anywhere from $210-$300! I hardly have even close to that amount of money to spend. I suppose I will just have to wait until it is possible for me to have a job then I could spend money on that.

DearMrKittens [2012-04-07 19:59:24 +0000 UTC]
I am sorry to ask but is there a way you can do a step by step one? Like this is hard for me to understand, like how did u get things of foam shaped like that and how do we all know how to get that basic shape correctly like that?
π: 0 β©: 1
TearsOfFallenAngels In reply to DearMrKittens [2012-04-07 20:51:39 +0000 UTC]
You shape the foam with scissors, i couldn't do a step by step for it. It'd be wayyyyy too long. What i do a lot is i study pictures of actual animals to help me foam.

DearMrKittens In reply to TearsOfFallenAngels [2012-04-07 21:03:32 +0000 UTC]
But it would help alot :/ like I mean it shows u used alot of pieces in that but other than that how are we to know what parts go were?

A reference sheet is just a drawin of your character or what you want your mask to look like a several different angles.
