Description This is a clay model of the torso of Michelangelo's David's torso, about 2 feet high. I figured for anyone interested in anatomy and classical sculpture this would be a great one to study.

Originally I wanted to do the full figure in marble ( only 3 feet high!) for my final year college piece - the head of carving said ANYTHING BUT THAT! The David is so well known and publicised, used in adverts and even Monty Python that it's now seen as a really kitsch object, despite the fact that it represents one of the highest conceptions of anatomical beauty ever achieved. It's such a shame.

With this I wanted to study it in great detail, and by removing everything that identifies it as David hopefully make people take another look at what Michelangelo did. I know what I've made doesn't come near the subtlety of the original but I hope it does re-present a shadow of it, in anonymous form.

what a bad ass idea bro.  i loved the strap upon first glance! the draping of it across the buttock, insane; to realize that your doing a model tribute to the david!

'Kitsch' is a word that annoys me. Something either has power, beauty and quality or it does not, and a response to the original has merit regardless of how many knock-offs have been produced. Still, this version does add something, since the changed overall shape creates a new form that can be appreciated in its own right. Radical solution to the over-sized head and hands on the original, too!

Thanks man, and I can't apologise enough for replying three years too late! I've been terrible at getting back to people on deviantart but I really appreciate what you said. Yeah the David would have looked a bit odd if I'd reproduced it exactly from top to bottom. I'm a big fan of torsos. Michelangelo himself said a sculpture should be able to roll down the Capitoline hill without losing anything significant and a torso would definitely survive that. Granted they do look like they've already rolled down a hill but that's beside the point.

Michelangelo definitely knew what he liked about male anatomy!
