Description
This is a 1/4 scale maquette which I'll be carving full size in the Lake District this summer. Well, I'll be starting it this summer anyway. The stone is andesite; softer than granite but not by much so it'll probly take a few visits. The site is a huge outcrop of rock at the top of a hill in a forest, near the cottage I'll be staying at but off the public paths. I'll show photos of the finished carving but I'm not going to advertise its location. The idea is to communicate across generations, maybe over hundreds or even thousands of years depending how the climate of the country changes. It's clear that wind and rain have had little effect on the riven surfaces of exposed stone since the end of the last ice age, but at the bottom of the valley they've been scraped smooth by glaciers.
My hope is that someone out walking in the next millennium might stumble across an ancient sculpture by some unknown carver. Maybe even be touched by the vast gulf of time between us.

hi! i saw a crop of this picture of tumblr and i looked for it everywhere. there was a quote from michelangelo added, and i assumed it was from michelangelo and searched everywhere for it. i fell in love with it the first moment i saw it and i was seriously so desperate to find the out more about that sculpture. and no matter how hard i googled i couldn't find anything relevant. i wanted to know it's size, name, where it is to be found so badly.
now i finally found it and i am simply blown away!! im absolutely in love! it is so beautiful i can't find the words to describe how much i love this. it's so beautiful oh god i just want to keep on rambling forever!

I am so sorry I'm replying to you this late, I've been terrible here on deviantart (and IRL). I can't tell you how much it means to me to hear you say that. More than anything I hoped to touch people with my work and to know that you feel that way about it is truly wonderful. Thank you.

There is not much in a way of masons and stone sculptors on DA that is awesome.

This is really cool. I've always been partial to the unfinished works of ancient artists. This looks so mysterious, but so well done! The finished version is exquisite as well, but the unfinished ones will always have a place in my heart.

I went up to the Lake District not long after I posted the image, went into the forest with my model and tools and a tent, got everything set up... and the chisel pretty much bounced off the stone. It's incredibly hard stuff so I had to go back to the drawing board. Instead I sculpted a little ram's head in wax and carved it over several visits - it's in my gallery if you're interested. When I have a bit of money I'm going to go back and do something a bit bigger like a human head, though I do hope I'll still get to do the full figure one day, or something like it. Maybe when I have a car and a portable generator and decent power tools.

Dear Tim,
following an earlier comment on your wonderful sculpture I would like to point your attention to a rather new group called the they recently started accepting sculpture, and are really on the look out for good sculpture. I was sending them the link to your work.
see correspondence under [link]
As the traditional sculpture is still underrepresented in DA (unfortunately) I there a good opportunity to support and create a valuable platform for our medium. Should you not yet know the platform, I would like to ecourage you to contact them, contribute to the group gallery or affiliate yourself as a member.
Stay well!

Make art a part of nature! (Or nature a part of art!)
I'm a little confused by your description though - are you being commissioned to do this, or are you just doing it for fun? A very fancy signature on the landscape, regardless! I think it's a wonderful idea, and you express it beautifully.
And thank you very much in return!

I'd love for someone to commission me to do it! But no, at the moment it's off my own back so a lifesize figure in such hard stone will have to wait till I can afford the power tools. Next time I get to the lake district I'm thinking of doing a big head set in the side of a hill (I say big, I mean like maybe 18inches or 2 feet high), of an old man with a huge bushy beard. But I'll leave it rough cut unlike the ram - thanks for your comments on that too

I like your Wolverine model, you've really got Hugh Jackman's features down. He's instantly recognisable which must be really tough on such a small scale.

Yeah working big makes it a lot easier, I always try to go as big as I can. What type of clay did you sculpt him in?
Thanks for watching

your very welcome
i used the laguna airdried clay. which is going to be in a kiln when it dries
my teacher told me to put it on a kiln to turn it into ceramic.
but i want to try other medium which is not airdr and in a cheaper price unlike sculpey. so then i can put more time to sculpt the details and stuff

Oh right. I'm impressed you managed to sculpt something so small in water based clay without it cracking.
I really must give sculpey a try, the details people get with it is really amazing.

JamesMarsano In reply to tecciztecatl [2009-12-09 05:16:33 +0000 UTC]
well its 18 inches though. not so small.
yeah! you should. i think your work is goinna be really wicked. if you use sculpey. i like sculpey a lot. because your can add lots of details. especially the grey firm sculpey, that one is awesome. its easier to see the details in grey rather than normal sculpey which is flesh tone

tecciztecatl In reply to JamesMarsano [2009-12-10 21:38:10 +0000 UTC]
18 inches sounds like the same scale as my torso - it's only 11in high but don't forget he's missing his legs!
Only thing I don't like the sound of with sculpey is hat you have to mix the normal with black or something to get the grey? That's what I read anyway. It sounded really laborious.

JamesMarsano In reply to tecciztecatl [2009-12-11 04:42:06 +0000 UTC]
yup XD
ahh well its not necessarily mixing those sculpey i just mixed it to experiment it. you can just buy the grey firm ones.
google for shiffletbrothers. they usually use the grey sculpey.
and by the way thank you very much for the watch

Not a problem, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in wax
Do you know if the firm stuff is harder to manipulate?
The shifflet brothers have some very impressive work, and some tutorials which is great. I've found a few tutorial links from DA: JamieDMac [link] has loads in his journals (look at the older ones too). I'll definitely give it a try soon.

oh yeah jamieDmac is terrific! i asked him lots of suggestions when i was sculpting my wolverine. i was stuck with the claw on his hands.. i didnt know how to do it
i also look up his old tutorials.
but thanks for reminding me though
yeah. i tried to manipulayte the firm one. its hard. but i think once you get used to it it a lot easier. i sometimes get problems in sculpting the normal sculpey, once i touch it so many times, it gets softer and sort of hard to do a sharp details.
i have never tried using all the firm one in a full figure though. i still have several boxes of normal sculpey, ill use the firm one next year
