Description
Slight upgrade to the original.its still not perfect, the coaster has had some work, so has the lighting.
The table material is next as it looks out of focus at this resolution, and if i get it right I'm adding other elements to the scene. (I have a brandy bottle!!)

this is indeed good work, but the lighting is a bit too much i think. and you probly want to tune a little bit to show less refraction color on the side of the glass
that's my suggestion.

thanks and fair comment, i upgraded this image recently to this [link] which i fancy has softer lighting. Its all a matter of taste really

Many thanks
It was rendered in kerkythea and awesome free rendering package (if you haven't heard of it) I can barely believe they can give it away free

Oh yeah I used Kerkythea before but I never thought you could get these types of results, I should look into this

Yep you should!
you should also wander over to the kerkythea group and see what we have there, there is some absolutely stunning work there, i'll send you an invite

Heh, I know a person named Brandy.
This looks really good though, but I can see what you mean about the odd table resolution. I suppose if it was just a little less blurry you could get away with claiming it's false wood.

Thanks!
I'm probably going find a really high resolution photo of a kitchen table and use that instead... cgtextures here i come!

nice can I ask u .... how u made this liquid??

Technohippy In reply to The9Architect [2010-09-21 09:08:56 +0000 UTC]
thanks
as you can see from the description i use sketchup and kerkythea. kerkythea has some great materials on their forum, including liquids, but i think this is actually a modified glass material with the same RI of 1.511 as glass (which is probably incorrect for brandy).
because i use sketchup for modelling, i have to deal with materials with two faces and kerkythea doesn't like two faced materials. so in order to render this correctly, i first modelled the glass complete with liquid surface and radius representing the surface tension. The internal walls of the glass below the surface line will be the liquid material so i reversed those faces and applied a seperate material to those in sketchup.
a better description of this method is located here [link]
hope that answers your question

to save you time in making liquids in a glass techno use Wings3d's Extract/Normal command it will replicate the faces you select and resize them according to their normals then select the top face and bevel it really tightly a few times then when finished smooth the glass and such and viola you have liquid in glass. thats how i made my liquid inside the Golden Wonder render.

ah ok i'll have to try that, i've only created a couple of models in wings3d so far so i'm still a noob at it, Sketchup is still my first love though (as much as it can't do organic shapes well... grrr!)

This is fantastically done, it looks soooo realistic. When I look very close I can tell it is 3D (because I KNOW it is...) but when you just look at it without thinking about it... ot looks so damn real! Great work, seriously! Faved!

Are you going to add condensation to the glass??? Or ice? Perhaps a few crumbs or knicks out of the wood surface? I have cork coasters, and this one looks perfect! It may be just a tiny-tiny bit too yellow. But I lOVE your work!! If it wasn't under "digital," I wouldn't pay any attention to it cuz it looks 99% real! :joy:

It supposed to be a glass of brandy so no condensation I'm afraid. Ice... maybe... we'll see. the table is my nest target and I'm getting used to the material editor so might try some multi layer bump mapping to rough it up.

When you have kids, brandy only crosses the mind after 8pm on a Sat. night - the rest of the time, it's apple juice...lol

know that, I do. the fact that its a heavy measure in the glass is not coincidental
