I wouldn't say better, it does thing differently. It is a subdivision modeller (whatever that means!) its approach is based on primitive shapes which you then alter. It was quite easy to make this model once i got to grips with the UI. this is in fact my previous lightsabre, the only difference is that I pressed autosmooth and it turned that one into this... how cool?

I've been blogging about free 3d resources at including modelling, rendering, textures etc, you might want to check it out as the last couple of posts have been about modellers.
there are so many different ways of creating shapes for free that its unbelievable... you should check them out and see what works for you
