the tutorial seems to just end up making moreover like 'background3.swf'; I thought it would teach me how to make exactly like the end product provided by your link-->[link]

I have been searching for something like this for LITERALLY days--you wouldn't have happened to figure out the AS3 part by now, would you? (I'm hoping possibly yes since this was posted a while ago...!)

Sorry, never bothered mostly because it's so easy to combine AS2 and AS3 files just by loading the AS2 file. I'm old school also using Flash just before Flash 4 came out so I still code in AS2 O_o

No worries--I've barely dabbled in actionscript--do you have any tips for a beginner shifting from AS2 to AS3?

Works in the newest version of Flash but you have to create a new AS2 and not AS3 Flash Movie. I assume you downloaded the fla files as well and that did work.

I haven't worked out the effect using AS3 yet but either way the file can still be used in conjunction with AS3 swf movies.

Glad you liked it, I always loved the effect on static HTML pages but didn't care for the huge file size for the background image & knew that Flash could tile and use gradient masks so I'd thought I'd share

wow, great stuff. this reminds me of i should make some tutorials. no free time though.

Do you think you could make a tutorial on how you acieved the "fuild" design of the site. Like how when the window expands or shrinks the "elements"/buttons adjust to the center?

That's something I'd LOVE to know.

Cheers!

tecwzrd In reply to Solaris07 [2008-01-25 14:41:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks The centering is all handled by the swfobject script when you use the 100% code. The zip with the fla/swf/html/js files has the 100% script in the html which is why it centers automatically. Also notice in the html code that so.addParam("scale", "noscale"); within the swfobject is set to "noscale" which keeps the movie a constant size. Only downsize to this is you have to mask out your movie if you go beyond the document bounds like you do with your porfolio with the menu outside of the bounds popping up.

It's also important if using the 100% script to keep your movie height/width at a decent size since you do away with the scroll bars also.

Great effect Micah and the tutorial looks great too. I don't get along too well with Flash though I love what can be done in it (at least not with the newest versions, loved flash 4 though) :sigh:

Thanks Martha Flash is much easier than people think IMO. Really for web design at least you only need to understand basic principals of movie clips and buttons with minimal action scripting to create amazing work. The ability to reuse images without increasing file size is a huge bonus as well.

Main reason I use it is for quick loading sites with 98+% compatibility across all platforms/browsers.

Ha ha !! You must be a hell of a good sales guy, I feel like going out and buying two versions of Flash
Seriously I know what you mean and someday will try to retake the flash thingy, I really love what you can do with it and agree with the compatibility stuff.
