Description
Whoo, something different again.I wanted to learn how to draw Protogens (and draw them in a less cartoony style at the same time), so that's what I set out to do. This was a lot harder than I was expecting.
Let's go over the various sketches as I did them, and the stuff that had to be worked around to get decent results. (And yes, I numbered them after the first one.)
#1
The first, and obviously disastrous attempt at drawing a Protogen. I had no clue what I was doing, and realized that pretty quick. Immediately after getting to the point that I stopped at, I pulled up Google and found some references. The first one was a Protogen from a website claiming to be the "official" site of the Protogens. The second reference image was from a piece of concept art for the Geth race in Mass Effect. And from those two reference pictures -and others later on- I worked a much more appealing result into existence.
#2
Immediate improvement. Except I focused too much on the Geth part and not enough on the fluff. And three fingers don't quite look good. I tried to reach a midway with the neck fluff and the robo-chest. And the head... it's passable, and done without proper technique.
#3
I did heads from the left side and head-on. I realized how close and posed they were, so I added a heart and "Luvin.'" And I still simply drew the heads as I went along.
#4
Tried to do a simpler full-body sketch. For the most part, it looks exactly as I wanted it. Except for when I got to the knee area. Also tried out a little Mohawk-hair styling, which looks good. The mask... it was starting to look wrong.
#5
This is the turning point where it all changed. Because I took a few days to work on the Halloween group picture, I neglected this page. And when I finished that project and came back to this one, I had completely forgotten how I did the head last time. I kept re-sketching it until the sudden realization struck. And that's why there's a sudden change in styling. I realized that I was not applying my now-universal anatomical drawing skill stuff. Which is what the next sketch is all about.
#6
Head practice. I immediately applied my universal anatomy stuff, but the result wasn't what I wanted. I tried again with 6.2, but it felt even worse. I took a break and scrolled through a few Protogen drawings done by other people, so I could find something to reverse-engineer. Things like this came up (and I personally love that one, it's cute), and I noticed a few minor details (like the straighter mask and the squared-off fin/wing things). Which were heavily applied in sketches 6.3-6.5, and are arguably the best of the entire section.
#7
I moved on to legs, which were also giving me trouble. There's not much to say, I didn't really do anything about that. Digitigrade is best looking.
#8
The head looks spot on. The body still proved to be terrible. Mostly because of the shoulders and I hadn't decided on the way I want to do the chest-piece.
#9
Just a simple bust of a Protogen. Practicing the head shape. It didn't go quite right, but I wasn't too bothered by it, under the guise of "it's just practice, I've just barely started doing this." Overall resembles a llama.
#10
Still working on the head-shoulders region. Roughly the same rating. The mask -with the angle and shaping I did- looks more like a reptile head. The shoulder screen things are still too small.
#11
Did and action pose. I was thinking of a song while I worked on it. This sketch is one of my favourites on this page. (I would've placed a link, but the computer I type this on is so outdated that it won't load the specific page, which therefore means I can't get to the share link on it.)
#12
I tried from a different angle, and with bigger shoulder-screens. Really getting there. I also started working the Geth part back in by adding the external tubing.
#13
So, after doing more reading into the Protogen, I learned that the "particle mask" opens up like a mouth for the purpose of ingesting food. That's what I tried to emulate. Not quite as good as I hoped, but it's not disastrous.
#14
Another action pose. Looks good. The shoulder screens are a tad too small. And I added two tubes. Apparently I'm good at drawing hands out, if I draw them big enough.
#15
Some real action posing, with legs included too! Inspired by Dead Space 2, and the fact that Protogen's are built as space-explorers (which entails the vast assortment of space-faring related jobs) I figured a Protogen doing engineer things would be perfectly fitting. By far my top favourite out of all of these. Even got some detail on the back too, which looks just as good.
#16
Rolling off of the space'gineer, I did a starship security guard. Generic sci-fi weapon included. Did a surprised/alerted expression.
#17
One final run at the above-the-waist sketching. Basically my finalized styling. Mirrored version of the same general posing used for most of the other sketches. I might revisit working on Protogens by focusing on the lower half of the body.
#18
Tried again with the open-mouth look. Still not up to what I wanted.
Out of all of these sketches, I'd have to say my to favourite is #15, because it is the best looking, and entails a lot of what I wanted to do.
Yey, it's done. Would you people want a part-2 to this?

Protogens huh? Never really understood them myself and I'm honestly surprised that you even know what what they are. Still though, you did quite a good job on them as far as i can tell. Not really sure what to critique on given that I'm not sure exactly hoe to critique a speces i have never drawn but you seem to hit the nail on the head in terms of design! Keep up the great work as always mate.

Thanks man! I first saw Protogens a long time ago, but back then I had no clue what they were. It was only recently that I rediscovered them, and read into them a bit more.

Yeh they seem very interesting. I would incorporate them into my world but they simply dont have a place unless its my world's first attempts of creating realistic robots. Idk anyway great work!

They are indeed.
And I've got a suggestion. Since the Protogens are described as being created by a greater intelligence, of which designed the Protogens for the purpose of space exploration. So, maybe those M-tech Asteroid mining ops find a wrecked vessel with Protogens aboard. And said Protogens reactivate (they are technically cyborgs) and assist in the optimizing of the asteroid mining process.
Just a thought. If you want, I could plug you some of the information that I have.

Eh who knows probably not but they could be a part of MIRACLE's army. I mean she has assimilated many races before arriving to my earth.

Hmm... I'm not really liking that idea. I feel like the Protogens, if you do find a way to integrate them, should be their own thing -completely separate from things like MIRACLE.
And maybe you were right with them not having a place. My idea was pretty clichè, and yours kinda dips into the "I don't care about the official information" area. The Protogens are described as being created by a greater intelligence, for the purpose of space exploration -NOT created by an average race trying to create decent robots.

Well MIRACLE is a greater intelligence but i understand. Anyway thanks for the ideas but i will most likely do without

Yes I did. It was a bit of a struggle initially.

Thanks. I might actually work on a second edition of this kind of thing.
