The Face in the Ground

In the 1950's my grandfather was camping in the woods in an area of upstate NY which was then considered pretty deep wilderness country. He and a friend went out scouting for wood for a campfire and they happened upon a neatly stacked pile of firewood. The wood was newly cut, and not perfect for a fire (being still green) but it was better than searching out better wood, so they brought some of it back to their camp site. They were a bit confused because they were so far out in the woods in didn't make any sense for the pile to be there in the middle of nowhere, especially with no sign of a recent fire pit nearby. In any case, they used the firewood from that pile every night that they camped.

The following year they went camping again, and again used wood from the pile, which hadn't been touched by anyone else in the time they were away. By the 5th year of my grandfather going to that same camping area, they gradually used up the woodpile. On the last day of camping that year they noticed that the wood had been stacked on an old tarp, which was rotten and tattered by this time. For some reason my grandfather's friend yanked at the then-empty tarp, which revealed a human face half buried in the ground beneath it. They ran like hell back to their campsite where the wives were waiting, and they jumped in their car and took off to the nearest town, leaving all their camping gear behind.

Naturally, they contacted the police. It turned out the face was just the head (no body was ever found) of a man who had robbed a local diner 5 years earlier. The robbery was conducted alone, but the police guessed that the guy probably had a partner and they had come up to the woods to hide. For whatever reason the partner had killed this guy and buried his head under the firewood. The truly creepy part is that my grandfather had remembered how fresh the firewood was when he found it. He figured he found that wood no more than two or three days after the guy was murdered.

Freaky. So, nay update on the investigation? Also, I would've figured this head would've been buried long ago. How'd you manage to get this?

It's a photo-manip representation of the story. I try to draw on creepy stories I've heard over my lifetime when I do my manips. They never found the guy who did it.

I frankly find that absolutely terrifying! When I first saw it, I thought it was just a creepy painting you did, but then reading the story behind it. Man, it gives me chills just looking at it. I've seen lots of crazy stuff like that, but I think that tops everything! lol

I always like the stories you put with your deviations. I also always read through the whole thing (Take that as a compliment, I have the attention span of a plastic chair). This one's nice and dismal, almost unnerving, but at the same time, settling.

I always look forward to your comments, and you always crack me up (plastic chair). Peace to you, Hitler-mustache-Bush...

I've got plenty more where that came from. I'm the Queen of Dry, Dirty Humor (alternately referred to as Ukraine, but my people enjoy the life of exile, so shhhhhh!!), but I like to keep myself in check. I perform for my friends every time I'm with them, every weekend and Friday night at Chuckles' Buckles (alternately referred to as Mikey's house), and yes, I do accept donations. In the form of cash. I don't need any more tube socks. There is an abundance of them in Ukraine. Shalom. Haaaaaa.....Hebrew...

yes, I bet you would have! I had the eyes a bit more jagged and dirty, but it seemed to lose a bit of the humanity I wanted to keep there... so I added back different eyes...

very harrowing and haunting composition, and a great, chilling story to go with it. all together, you would make a fabulous horror/suspense writer, and you could very easily do all of your own artwork also. either that, or i picture alot of your great photoshop-work adorning those budget-friendly, b-rated horror movies you see in the discount bins in every generic shopping mart today. you could very easily be making a bundle my friend; you were meant for great things....thanx for sharing as always man, i really appreciate it. namaste-p.
