Description This one's been on the burner for a long time, working on it sporadically for a few hours at a time. It's Trixie having a moment with Starlight based off episode 0606. While the image seems to try and be "2deep4u", the main goal was to play around with dramatic lighting and shadows using artificial light sources.

The result is kind of a mixed bag for me, but here it is.

...in which Artrix draws a picture only to paint half of it black.

Joking aside, I too would be depressed if I had to talk to Purple Hair.

I'm actually really fond of the lighting here- I definitely get the emotional feeling the scene is meant to convey, but more so it feels very legitimate- the kind of harsh yellow glow of carnival electric lights.

I know you were going for the dramatic lighting, but one thing that I have to say as constructive criticism is the lighting on Trixie. Especially on her face, there isn't enough lighting or the shading is so dark that she's difficult to look at. I know it's a matter of the light source, but even if you lightened the shadows on her face a little bit, I think this could have make this look better. On that note, the lighting on Starlight is great. Her whole face is visible while the rest of her head is darkened in the right ways. We can see it, but it's not important to the mood of the picture, so it can be afforded to be darkened, and on that, you did a good job there of darkening it but not too much.

Even though I'm late to reply, I appreciate the comment. I definitely see where you are coming from and I'm reconsidering how I could have done this better. For something like this, a less "realistic" colouring style would probably work better.

That said, the fact that you can only see part of Trixie is quite deliberate. Starlight is fully lit, while Trixie is shrouded by the confines of her van, a metaphor of her past. It's also to emphasize that the usually boastful magician is in a vulnerable state. Whether this is properly conveyed or not, this is the reasoning behind it.

You did a fantastic job creating the somber feeling as Trixie explains. Terrific work on the ladies, with special kudos for Starlight Glimmer's uncomfortable body language, which Trixie's sad affect comes across nicely too. Excellent job on her van and all of the scenery too. Lovely work.
