Description ARGHHHHHH

this is the 2nd time i'm writing this.. 1st time the browser crashed. BASTARD!!!

anyway this is now the condensed explanation of each step... urghhh

LARGE-ish FILE

1 - RAWSCAN of a page of SINBAD : Rogue of Mars #1. No touch-ups, no edits. it's a raw scan.
It's scanned in GREYSCALE mode.

2) - levelled out the lines.
Used this basic method -> [link] <-

3) - Converted file into CMYK mode for colour purposes.
Did my usual 'colour hold' thing, where i turn the main outlines black, and the inner lines a blue-grey.

4) - Painted the backgrounds.
I do this 1st to let me see how I'd colour up the characters.
Whatchu' see here is the backgrounds minus the lineart.

5) - Flats are added.
Along w/ the colour flats, details such as Pupils, tatts, scars etc are added.
NOTE: this is usually the longest process for me.

6) - Minor shades are added.
Gives me more of an idea of where the light's hitting the characters etc.

7) - Main Highights and more shades are added.
This basically defines where the direct light hits each character and helps shape them alot more.

8) - Red Tint and Glow are added on the characters
The tint is added to set the whole mood and atmosphere of Mars, as is also why the highlight glows are added.
Makes it Pop more i think.

9) - Final touches and it's Complete.
Basically added some shines on the metal areas aswell as add a minor skylight to add to the atmosphere.

so yeh, that's it. COMPLETE minus the dialogue.

thanks for posting this bro
Im learning a great deal from just observing what you do

question about the tints and glows

how do you add them?

and do you aply them to skin tones because it looks like it.

keep it up

theCHAMBA In reply to phantro [2007-03-16 06:38:15 +0000 UTC]

they're applied only to the characters as the background's are done by step 5.

tints and highlights are applied on seperate layers

I'm supposing the centaur like creature is not supposed to stay blue skinned because of the final lighting style. I understand but I really like the blue skinned version he looks so awesome. Did you design him? That is one of the coolest looking centaurs I have ever seen. The tats and everything.

I like the styling of Sinbad's facial hair also. Very cool looking and realistic texture...

theCHAMBA In reply to Joomba [2007-03-16 06:36:29 +0000 UTC]

if in pure white light [which i'm not sure yet if there will be in this mini-series] then nope, you'll also see him under the red tint [or the violet/blue tint for night].
there was a brief text description of what the writer had in mind, so what i did was attempt to interepret what he had loosely described and visualize what he might look like.
I usually like to 'wing' designs on the, so fortunately i got the desired look 1st try.

ImagineTheEnding [2007-03-15 18:45:17 +0000 UTC]

To tell the truth...I think alot of these panels and your art would look better with thicker lines. It's just my opinion...but some of the coloring looks a bit sloppy because of the ultra thin lineart.

*shrug* but eh...it's your style. I'm a big fan of your art, so I won't complain too much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theCHAMBA In reply to DrZime [2007-03-16 06:32:59 +0000 UTC]

learn to draw.

as a youngin, watching cartoons mianly. Jst trying to copy what i watch in general. bein cartoons, toys and even people.
school jst allowed me to draw and expand my artistic knowledge alot more.
Unfortunately i didn't directly learn anything from school. but as mentioned, i was given the opportunity to explore art more freely w/ no restrictions or guidelines.
so yeh, this is the 2nd year i've been out've school. so no classes anywhere at the moment with also no real plans to go back anytime soon.

any hints on the layer settings for your highlights and shadows? like on step 6 and 7? by hints I mean 'Tell me your magic!!!!'

P.S. For those accuracy demanders [taht's right I like to make up terms] overdue was inaccurate in the sentence 'don't overdue it'. I'm sure you were looking for 'over do' not 'overdue.

aite
well for 6 and 7, there's two layers for shades.. i can be done on 1 layer, but i choose two til i'm satisfied enough to merge the two.
each layer setting's on linear burn @ 35% opacity and the colour of my shade of 100/100/100/100 [pure black].

again, i could jst set my layer on 100%, and jst use a 35% opacity on my gradients when i apply the shade on that layer, but yeh.. this is jst a method i've found to work for me.

1st set of highlight's is 0/0/0/0 [pure white] on an overlay layer setting of 35%.

but yeh, as for the accuracy demander from earlier.. to each his or her own preferance. so it's all good

Hey Jeffrey

I've tried this method, but the colors of the shades look dead and cold. how do you get that glowing warmth in the the shadows?

- Thanks
