Description This has been the most fun of this whole project; designing and creating a set of realistic working digitigrade legs. I can never seem to call them finished which is a great thing, always coming up with new materials and ideas to use on the design and all.

This is the updated concept of the recent build of my older leg design which can be found in these locations:
Anthro Wolf Legs in Action (Video)- [link]
Anthro Wolf Leg Finished Pic1 (Old Build)- [link]
Anthro Wolf Leg Inners Pic2 (Old Build)- [link]
Anthro Wolf Leg For Fursuit (Old design for the above linked legs)- [link]

Here is a list of links to photos of the completed legs using this new design:

Below I will go into detail on some of the aspects of the design using the above Drawing as reverence.

I used aluminum for the leg braces contouring it to the shape of my legs as displayed by Fig.1. This is a new idea used in this concept. Padding was needed in some areas for comfort mainly the part where the bars rub against the ankles.

The main piece of the actual foot extension part of the design is made from a piece of PVC Pipe with an inner wood piece made from a rake handle pointed out by Fig.2, the two materials combined create a much stronger material through experimentation both failed on their own. There is also a metal plate on either side of the pipe adding additional strength at a weak zone because of the separate bolt encasement and provides a great connecting zone and dispersal zone for the Wire. This too was a new concept from the later build and makes the extensions lighter and less bulky.

Fig.3 is pointing to the “Foot Encasement” which I have upgraded the material from the Duck tape of the old build to a Shaped Metal housing with padding within for comfort. I’d really like to someday get my feet casted and create Plastic shoes to replace these but I don’t have the means to do that at the moment unfortunately.

Last of all, I tried a new approach to the toes of the feet here since the use of the PVC Pipe allowed me much more play room. There are two parts of each foot consisting of 2 toes. The toes where cut from a piece of plywood giving the toes both a strong and bony realistic look. I’d really like to make the pieces from aluminum but I don’t have the material. The wood on metal after awhile starts to make an excruciating squeaking sound, but I think Ill be able to fix the problem by adding metal around the inside of the Bolt Holes.

All and all, this new design is lighter, more comfortable and far more realistic looking then the older build and I am quite satisfied with them.

I thought of similar design before,

But your drawing has more effort than my thought imlove it

Certainly an amazing way to improve on the designs floating around. Im built a set for myself (the regular wooden ones for a satyr costume this year) and was wondering what thickness of aluminum/gauge of wire you used for the leg braces? i can't imagine it was easy contouring them.

This is an incredible design! My friend and I are curious if the ankle is flexible? Would you happen to have a video of its movement?

Do you have a better blueprint? So I can see the back of the leg/foot. How long did it take for you to make the digitigrade legs?

That's a nice low-profile design. It's unfortunate that the ankle movement is so limited without a knee joint for the cable to go up to the thigh.

Wow, this is just brilliant. I mean I've seen them constructed out of metal but nothing so elegant. I bet it's really light weight!! God! This is fantastic work, and to see that the finished product works! This is amazing, I can't even express how blown away by this I am!

I am trying to build this and am starting to get frustrated with the "foot" of the stilt. Does the wood come out of the PVC and that's what you connect the toes to? Do you have an extra peice I'm missing? It just seems impossible to have these wooden toes hold all that weight. Where does the bottom of the bungi attatch to? Help please?

In this design you overtax the tendon in the leg. It is not designed to work with such a lever on the foot.

That back wire should lead to a drawspring inside. It will lead to more fluid movement as well as impact dampening on the shinbone.

Can you be more specific by two peices? I'm building something simular and am using your sketch as a reference, but I can't figure out from this sketch or your description where the PVC pipe really goes and how exactly you built the bottom portion of the stilts. I see the "/" of the wooden plank, the bungii, and thin wood tooes, but I try to visualize building it and am wondering what I'm missing.

It's just so many stilts I've seen have been bulky and have a triangle of wood to support the plank. Did the PVC make it more balanced where you didn't need the bulk? [link] [link]

It's very thin, doesn't look like it would take much weight at all (bearing in mind I'm no expert) but if it does work then first off awesome secondly do you think you could draw an exploded version or all the different components separately with measurements added?

this is completely awesome, and they seem to be comfty to walk with!
I liked the older ones a little more but I guess it's because they weren't as thin as these ones...
I just wonder if they're tough enough for me [as I'm more average built than you], or if it was possible that they broke while wearing them....
Anyways for make a WOW worgen costume, is like the greatest thing ever!

I have a question about the bungii on the feet it connects to your real toe area and the digitgrade toe base and if so what does it do keep the toes level? I was looking to do a build very close to this only I'm going to use C beams (metal) for the base with PVC because I need them to hold up for 3 days I really like your design though. It's one of the best I've seen I just plan on making a larger foot base then what you used (like in underworld 2 because I'm kinda tall).

sryates [2011-07-10 16:15:54 +0000 UTC]

I really like this design, you know for that plastic foot your talking about, if you still haven't done it you could by creating it in polymer plastics. Or best would be fiberglass or a carbon fiber. You can get a fiberglass kit big enough to do a cast of your feet and as to casting them life casting kits can be bought at most craft stores where you mix in a mushy slip that turns to something like jello allowing you to cast plaster molds you can cast off that once you seal the plaster. Add a bit of air drying based clay to get that shoe shape you want.

Do you produce these? Would you allow others to use your method? I've been interested in making a set of digitigrade legs, but I was going to do the traditional "pillow up the legs, thicken up the back of the leg". That method looks okay, but the legs end up looking bulky. I like the method you've used here, since it looks sort of like stilts. How comfortable are they, and how long can you wear them comfortably?
