I love swans, I take quite a lot of pictures of them. They are lazy around here and rarely fly though!

Wow nice. The photos you take are very clear indeed. I have a Fuji S7000 that takes nice shots but I have to say your Nikon is pretty darn impressive!

Ye i got myself a Nikon AF-SVR70-200mm F2.8GIF lens, this shot and the last 5 subs were shot with it, i also got a 2xcon to make it a very usefull 140-400mm F5.6. aswell. roll on the summer!!!!!!! the 20d is a canon ye? im not up on the canon models but no doubt its a very good piece of kit. i just lost my job which is a bummer but if i can get a job quickly im gonna get the D2X with my money, that would be awsome.

oh you are lucky that swans are wild in Europe, The only swans I see are ones at zoos here. THe darker one is a juvenile isn't it? Still has some of its feathers from it's gosling stage?
Loverly photograph as usual

Thankyou!!!!!!!!! its nice to be lucky for a change too!!!! yes the dark one is a juvenile, im not sure how long it takes to go the mature stage of beautiful white. The lakes are full of them in winter and they become very tame and friendly i didnt spend much time at all last year photographing them as i was concentrating on other species, its like catching up with old friends.

Thankyou!!!! that was took with a Nikon AFS-VR 70-200mm F2.8G IF, only had the lens just over a month ago and im over the moon with the quality it can produce. im also learning how to get the best out of the new technology it has, the VR vibration reduction and a few focus features, but first impressions are its very very good. and highly recomend one.

I'm impressed with the results as well, sounds like (and looks like) it is very good glass indeed. All of my Canon lens have the IS, which really works well (when I remember to turn it on). In a few weeks I'm going to step up to the L series 100-400mm. I work too hard for the wildlife shots to have so many of them fail in the clarity aspect.

THEDOC4 In reply to cream68 [2005-12-29 15:44:50 +0000 UTC]
Cheers!!!! your choice of lens, the L 100-400mm sounds a good choice, you dont mention the speed but i run a 2xcon on my 2.8 70-200mm, which makes a very usefull 140-400mm f5.6. the range i find gives great coverage for all types
of birds from small garden species up to flocks of geese, the VR can compensate for hand held shots in great light too, which is great as its very rare i use monopods or tripods.

cream68 In reply to THEDOC4 [2005-12-29 19:28:10 +0000 UTC]
absolutely, I believe a lens with that specific range is so useful as to justify the price. As for the IS, I seldom carry a tripod myself, although I have acheived good results when I have...not counting the shots that I missed because I couldn't get set up in time.

Totaly, i have some interesting shots took at 600mm from a tripod, but the shots missed through setup time, im happier finding something to lean against or take the shots and gamble lol.

You did a great job. I have not had the opportunity to get any in flight this week. The weather has been gloomy and dark, typical for this time of year. I did just order two filters for my camera--the Polarizing Filter and the Neutral Density Filter. Hope these will help me take nicer pictures. Lots for me to learn and understand once the sun decides to shine a little more. Winter is so dreary here.

THEDOC4 In reply to pcoppolo46 [2005-12-29 15:56:48 +0000 UTC]
thanks!!! i know what you mean about the weather, we gets lots of dull days and lots of rain. but im quite chuffed beacaurse we have finally had some snow!!!!!!!!! only about 3 inches but enough to coat everything white. so im making the most of
it and getting out as much as poss. the filters sound interesting, the way i test my new gear for things like filters is do a test indoor and outdoor, just set up a object and shoot it identically with all the filters, that way you can tell exactly what the difference they make to a subject, if its darker, lighter, etc. then with that knowledge test it further in the field.

pcoppolo46 In reply to THEDOC4 [2005-12-31 20:51:58 +0000 UTC]
Sounds like a plan. I received my filters today and now I have to work with them and see how to use them. I am going to check the net and see what help I can find for using them. Lots to learn when you want to take really good pictures. I always hear that it is damp and foggy a lot in England. And that it rains a lot. We get a lot of rain in the spring and summer that last few years and a lot of snow and freezing temperatures. Western and Central PA is not the place to live if you want a lot of sunny, warm weather.
