1 Oracle: “You’re not giving him options. You’re taking them away from him.”
1 Batman: “Exactly. He needs to just be a man. The ‘true’ identity of the Joker. A man who learned sadism, interrogation, and torture from the best in the world. He learned his lessons well; and ran his site like Abu Ghraib. But something happened.”
2 Oracle: “What’s the storyline you’re writing?”
2 Batman: “His team was killed, and he fell into the hands of someone he’d tortured. He was disfigured, and his government disavowed all knowledge of him. Assumed he was dead. He was embittered. A man who had been told to do evil, in the service of good. But he found out too late it was a lie. He was disposable, and all the evil he had done hadn’t led to peace.”
3 Batman: “So he visits that whirlwind back on the country who put him up to it. The details almost don’t matter, just so long as they’re believable. As meticulous and credible as Major William Martin.”
3 Oracle: “Operation Mincemeat took the British military months of planning. A team of people putting every tiny detail in order.”
4 Batman: “And that’s what we have to do, to stop him. He will still be just as terrifying. But people will be able to put a name to him. Label him. Reduce him to a man. Not immortal. Not omniscient. Not unknowable. Just a bad person who did bad things and became jaundiced by his equally bad enablers. Parts of the story must be pathetic, to take some of his mystique away.”
5 Oracle: “But the magic he’s wielding…”
5 Batman: “He learned about that spear through his job, and stole it with insider knowledge. Nothing he’s done is either supernatural or inevitable.”
6 Oracle: “Okay. Alright. Give me a week or two. This is a pretty comprehensive order.”
6 Batman: “The sooner it’s done, the better.”
