Description
I see it time and time again in video games and films female warriors wearing little to no gear in battle, just for the reason of being sexy. Now I totally get it, sex sells. I'll even admit in some circumstance it makes sense. However, in a realistic fight having only enough armor to cover your chest and pelvic area isn't going to protect much. Another problem I see is the built in breasts in the armor. If someone hits you with enough force in your chest that armor is going to bend in and crush your sternum, which can kill you. So I decided to do some armor studies and concepts that would work. I actually had a lot of fun drawing these. I'm in no way a professional in the art of armor, so If I have something wrong in my concepts I wouldn't be surprised. I did as much research as I could. but you never know, haha.My site: rushelle.com/

So somehow I missed this! I agree one the "sex sells, but this is stupid" topic, but let's talk about the breasts bit here. So let's take historical civilizations into account here. In a patriarchal society (most of Europe and Asia) a women wouldn't be allowed to fight anyway, but IF she were, then she would likely be small chested as full chested women were highly coveted for fertility. On this account, your drawings are fairly accurate. Step into Norwegian, Celtic, Finnish and Swedish culture however. Women were permitted, and even encouraged to join in combat as these societies were the closest to gender equality we've ever seen. There would have been no discrimination based on breast size. Binding is a possibility, but based on findings there actually was armor where the metal was formed to hold the larger breast size. Typically in male and female armor, the upper torso section of chest armor was thicker than the rest to prevent as much folding and denting as possible.
As for the piece itself...
Vision- I gave this a 3.5. This drawing certainly portrays a point of view that both you and many others hold. Its an increasingly common topic of conversation lately, and I feel that you accurately portrayed the thoughts of many here.
Originality- For this, a 3. The topic and concept is not new to me, and is something I see somewhat regularly. That being said, I felt it fair to say that you took a more in depth approach here, explaining more than the typical "It doesn't protect anything important" viewpoint. You discussed the idea of integral structure regard breast protection.
Technique- 2.5 compared to your usual work. These are simply sketches, from what I gather. Good sketches, but still sketches.
Impact- This is your coup d'etat for me. I am big on social liberty and gender neutrality. You speak clearly about how there is a direct split in the realism of male and female armor in video games. There is a strong sense of masculinity in male armor, and only sexual objectification in female armor. This is something that as a whole I would love to see change in the video game industry.

So true! This was very helpful, most of the female armor reference sheets I find are totally inaccurate... excellent drawings as well.

Being hit in the chest hard enough with ANY armor style is potentially deadly. Pretty sure the more busty female warriors of the past had armor built to handle their chest. Big boobs and hard flat armor DO NOT MIX. Its not a style thing. Its for comfort as well as protection. Squeezing huge boobs into a flat chested armor is painful and prevents proper breathing. If the armor was made properly the built in breast wont be anymore of a problem than flat chest armor. Grow some D cup breast then try to squeeze them into a properly fitting flat chested armor with no room to give.
You can argue that many female warriors were boobless but not all were.
Anywho awesome armor. Just thought I would share my opinion on the breast part.Β

Actually, I played with a lady gamer who asked for Breast Compartments to added to her armor. They were basically external compartments she stored Healing Ointment in. Had to say it was kinda funny to hear the other players complain that her armor was impractical, when she got more out it than most players think of.

I feel a bit consternated when I see comics, drawing, and films with women wearing teeny weeny bitsy pieces of string and steel and it passes as "armor". Β It kind of misses the point. Β XD Β But like you said, sex sells, and the women portrayed are not supposed to be heroes, they are meant to be sexualized objects for guys to drool over.

You make a very good point with this. In the video game Dragon Age: Origins the leather armor was more like clothing. -_- Which in no way would protect your character if you got hit with those nasty looking Darkspawn weapons. Now in DA II they made the improvement where in the leather armor, it looks like there is some sort of padding almost making it look like kevlar vests that police wear. The heavier armor in DA was much like you pointed out where it had breasts, again some of the combat moves where an enemy warrior knocks your character back with a strike to the sternum with the pommel of the great sword or ax would likely do a lot more damaged than simply stunning your character on the ground. Β
All in all a very good argument on both sides where it isn't realistic with this 'sexified' armor to protect a character but it makes more profit for the company, but you lose the realistic element in the game that some people look for. Β

"If someone hits you with enough force in your chest" >most likely the force would be sufficient enough to crush any armor regardless of the shape.
agreed with the rest of the rant tho
