Description
I've had a couple of people request I draw a scene from my fic Iron Oxide , so I decided to draw this scene from Chapter 11. I had to abridge it a little to fit on one page, but I was glad to finally draw this. This page was also a composition challenge. I've been trying to make my comics look more official, but I still struggle with getting the panels arranged perfectly, as well as the perspective of the background. There's a lot of skills that go into making a good comic page that you don't realize until you try it. But I think I am making progress at least.

Huh, that's really interesting! I do imagine there are so many details that go into implants like that. Out of curiosity, what is the maintenance like when you have to recharge the battery or get the implants updated? Is it a simple process?
As for Omega, I do think he has a Flicky, but since he is part of Team Dark, I don't think Shadow or Rouge particularly care. I imagine Sonic or Tails would do something about the Flicky if Omega was on their team, but Shadow and Rouge seem to care less about the animals. It's not like they're evil or anything, but Team Dark has different goals than Sonic and his friends. On the other hand, Omega is extremely robotic, unlike Gamma who had more personality, so maybe it's possible that Omega is just a robot with no animal.
In terms of the rough draft, it wasn't that Metal seemed evil. He just sounded like a textbook. I remember the opening chapter in particular. I had to pull out like 2k+ words of computer science and physics because I knew no one would care. xD But I'm really glad to hear you like how he explains stuff! I try to keep his explanations scientifically accurate, understandable, and short, which is really hard to do with some of the physics stuff.
I initially imagined Sonic's leg like how Sonic looks in the Archie Comics when he's roboticized. That's the style of leg I drew in this comic, although you can't really see it because it's his right leg. However, after I drew this, I decided I didn't like how that leg would look because the yellow knee looks odd. So I'm going to draw a bigger Iron Oxide picture where you can see his leg more clearly. It will look basically like a fusion between his normal leg and Metal's leg, and I'm going to make the knee gray so it transitions with the rest of him better.

The battery life depends on what the program has like for example, if I use a program without any noise filtering, it lasts longer.Β With filtering it lasts 2 to 6 hours shorter so let's say, without ClearVoice (the filter) the battery would last me around 28 hours.Β With ClearVoice it would last me around 24 to 26 hours depending on the weather conditions.Β My disposables (hearing aid batteries that are made for implants) last way longer than that, I can get up to a week with or without ClearVoice.Β
As for the company making different sound strategies, you have to know what you're doing and have uses test drive what they like and dislike about the strategy and improve it.Β There's another sound strategy in the works and I don't know when it will reach clinical trials for the FDA to approve it.Β
The FDA clinical trials are 180 days and it hasn't been submitted to the FDA yet due to needing more feedback and tests on how to improve it but from what I know so far is that ALOT of people like it so I'm really excited to get it when it's out to the public.Β
As for my audiologist updating my processors, it's simple to do, we just plug it in and if there's an update available my audiologist will click to update it like you'd do on Windows, Mac, Linux and so forth.Β Once updated it stays on there, it can be taken off it it creates issues for the user such as the processor unable to communicate with the internal implant.Β But that's rare now as they make patches to fix that right away.
The programming itself is made for Windows as it has no Mac support yet but can be used with a Mac if you have Boot Camp to run Windows as a virtual machine.Β The programming is really nice, you have all these "toys" to play with lol plus an equalizer to tweak each electrode and then once that's done you can see the bars on how loud or soft each electrode is when you talk or hear sounds, it's really cool.Β I would say that it's complicated but not as complicated once you know what the goal is.Β Once you know what you're going for then you just need users to see what they like and dislike.Β We have some users that don't like change at all and I know a FEW users that are behind with the sound strategies as they don't like change.Β But because they don't like change, their battery life sucks badly.Β Updated sound strategies help to improve the battery life or sometimes it could be how the processor is made to work with that specific strategy.Β I remember when I was first activated I was getting over 30 hours of rechargeable battery, but as I got remapped for more volume as I did run out of volume the first month I was activated which is totally normal as they set you off very SOFT but it doesn't seem that way at first, as you adapt you then start to hear how soft it was really set to.Β Β More volume equals more power.Β Higher M levels (electrode levels inside the cochlea) more power it's gonna consume.Β Also if you have a THICK skin flap in which you need more magnets for the headpiece to stay on your head, the more that's gonna consume so lots of things there happening.Β I'm lucky that my skin isn't that thick which is why my battery life is pretty high for disposables, I get a decent life.Β Some do and some don't. It's all really interesting.
As for what you said about Omega, I think it's very possible that he doesn't have one as like you said he's more robotic than Gamma.Β But I don't remember how or when Rouge got him, I gotta replay that again. XD
Rough draft or not, I would still enjoy reading how he explains things, I'm a tech geek myself so I like stuff like that.Β Β In the fic he makes it more fun and it's funny how Sonic remarks wanting stuff for it to be in simple English language lol makes me wonder how he learned to fly his own plane before Tails got into the picture.Β I read some Fleetway Sonic stuff and Sonic had his plane built by Dr. Kintobor who built his first plane and the Doc had him read the manual lol I don't think Sonic remembers how to fly it anymore cause he let's Tails fly it and take over all that stuff lol typical!Β
I can't wait for that picture to be made, I look forward to it!Β I will leave a comment on it as well!Β Though now I'm imagining how you're describing it and the way you said it would look nice that way.

That's impressive they are able to all of that! It's really great there are so many options for it. It seems like people can change the configuration settings for it depending on what they need, which makes it really useful for everyone who needs it.
As for Sonic's plane -- I actually think it was official from Sega that he flew his own plane until he meets Tails in Sonic 2. I always found that confusing because Sonic seems like the type who wouldn't have the patience or technical skill to fly a plane. I don't think we ever really see him flying the plane ever either, although it is supposedly canon that he flew it once. I'm sure Tails is probably way better than him at flying it anyway. xD

Moon41083 In reply to TheEnigmaMachine [2016-09-25 22:37:23 +0000 UTC]
Yep it is!Β Some people like the noise filters and some don't, it's a preference
Oh wow, I never knew Sega mentioned that, however in the games if you play as Tails alone in Sonic 2, Sonic flies the plane, same thing again in Sonic 3 and again if you play as Knuckles, Sonic's flying the plane lol I too see Sonic as the type of guy that isn't too technical about stuff like that or even have as much patience as he needs to have while flying. Tails is definitely better at flying as he has the patience for that.

This comic is a scene from my fan fic, Iron Oxide, and in that fic, Sonic gets wounded on his back. Metal ties the black band, which is actually a power cable torn from an Egg Pawn, around him to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, I had to drop most of the explanation to make this fit on one page,

Thank you so much!
I'm glad you like it! This was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story too. It was tricky to write because I wanted to make their interaction realistic and emotional, but I think it paid off.
I would so love to draw Iron Oxide into a comic! It would be so, so much work, but totally worth. I just wish I had more time to actually do it. @_@ Between work and trying to improve my skills systematically, as well as just writing Iron Oxide, I would never have time to draw the whole thing into a comic. Maybe someday.
At the very least, I will be drawing more scenes from it. xD I am happy with this comic, but I don't think it captures just how hurt and exhausted these two are. They are supposed to be struggling against Nega, and they look too happy/clean in this comic, so I want to draw something that captures their exhaustion better.

I think it definitely payed off .w. It's not often that I read a fanfic that can accomplish that without getting too angsty or sounding too forced.
Everyone always makes it look so easy, especially when they bang out pages of nice quality multiple times a week. I follow this one artist who must post at least three full color comic pages a week, and I'm just not able to understand how you could do that, especially since she takes care of sick animals all day at her house. And on top of that, she posts multiple side comics both here and on her tumblr. I can't even... How can one person draw so much? She must have the ability to control time... There's no way you can draw that much...
Well, I can't draw and expression other that mild irritation or complete indifference, so I wouldn't be much help there xD

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Celestial-moon-fire [2016-09-13 23:43:11 +0000 UTC]
When I first started writing the outline for Iron Oxide, I wanted to be super careful, because it definitely had the potential to feel too angsty or forced. I may have mentioned it before, but metonic is a really tricky ship to write for because it has potential to sound totally unbelievable. I had to find the right balance between putting the characters through emotional turmoil and making it too angsty. So I've tried to offset the dark moments with some happier ones. It's never fun to read characters who stand around and brood about their existential crisis, and the Sonic franchise has a tone of lightheartedness, so tackling some of the themes of Iron Oxide without overdoing it has definitely been a challenge.
Oh yeah, I am always super impressed with artists who can churn out work like that! It currently takes me forever to make one of these pages, like around 7-10 hours, but I'm hoping it gets easier as my skills improve. I spend a lot of time revising and redrawing until things are perfect, and I think people with more experience can make all of the "correct" decision on the first try, so they can work a lot faster.
Another thing that's tedious is I find I am most productive at certain times of the day. In the morning, I can do great art/writing quickly, but in the evenings, everything I do is awful. And what sucks most about that is that I am stuck programming for work when I am at my peak productivity. I guess it's good because I am efficient at work, but it sucks that I can never seem to be very effective in the evenings after work. I try to write Iron Oxide on weekend mornings, but I know I could do so much more if I had more peak hours. So that's another timebox -- not only is time limited, but not all hours of the day are equal.
But, such is life. Maybe someday I will be able to work on my art and writing full-time. xD

Celestial-moon-fire In reply to TheEnigmaMachine [2016-09-14 20:36:57 +0000 UTC]
There's nothing worse than getting too angsty... well, maybe too sweet, I guess. I'm not sure how you did it, but you got it just right. Even some actual published works can be a little too heavy handed on the angst. *coughcoughOrderOfThePhoenixcough*
I feel Metonic is one of those ships that's required to be a slow burn. I just can't picture it ever being 'love at first sight' or anything like that. It just wouldn't work any other way.
About how many words do you think Iron Oxide will be when it's finished? Are we talking really long? (It's actually already a little bit longer than an average novel, according to wikipedia, which is kind of awesome when you think about it~)
It only look 7-10 hours?! Including obsessing over making it look perfect???That's like... That's still pretty quick xD All these years I've been drawing, it still takes me at least a day just to get the line art done. I just finally finished a picture of Metal I drew around 5 days ago, and it's really small. I am impressed with your speed and also very envious .w.
I know what you mean about that. I'm always exhausted during the day, but I'm wide awake at night, which doesn't work well at all for writing/drawing when you have school and work. I actually haven't written anything in a long time for that reason.
The ability to spend all day writing and drawing sounds so implausible in the time between turning 15 and retiring, it could be a superpower...

TheEnigmaMachine In reply to Celestial-moon-fire [2016-09-15 04:22:32 +0000 UTC]
Metonic is definitely a slow burn ship, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. It's great for really building up the relationship and getting into all the wonderful details about what that means. It would be really hard to write otherwise because Metal and Sonic are just too different!
Although, I will admit I am working on a script to a comic series that isn't as much a slow burn. Comics are a much faster media for a reader than a novel is, so a lot of the story beats have to come much faster. Otherwise, there would just be so many pages! It's made writing the comic script a little tricky, but I think I'll figure it out. They say readers will believe any one thing about your story, so long as it's the first thing presented to them, so I'm trying to leverage that in the comic. I'm hoping it's more believable to the reader that Metal likes Sonic if it's the very first thing you tell them.
As for the word count to Iron Oxide, I think there's about 20kish words of story left. While I do have the whole thing outlined, it's always a little hard to predict how many words that will turn into, but the story will probably be 70k-80k words once it's finished. That's definitely in novel-length territory! I actually like to think of it as the first novel I've ever written, although it's a little less impressive since it's fan fiction. xD I'm planning on getting like 3 copies of it published from a vanity publisher once I'm done, just because I'm so happy to have written something like this. xD It's been so, so much work.
And yeah, I feel you on work/school draining all your energy. I'm not in school any more, but working full-time is just as bad, especially programming. Finding my most productive hours of the day and rearranging my whole schedule around them has been tremendously helpful for my writing, especially on the weekend. One of my productive hours is equivalent to four less productive hours, so safeguarding that is how I get as much done as possible. But still, I wish I could have more energy. xD

Celestial-moon-fire In reply to TheEnigmaMachine [2016-09-15 23:04:40 +0000 UTC]
I really love long fanfics, and there's nothing better than slowly developing characters and relationship in them. Any time it happens too quickly and you still have 90,000 words to go, it just feels weird. Like, what is left to develop at that point?
With comics, I feel like the amount of time passing between events is skewed, so it feels longer than it might actually be.
I never heard that before. Now I think about it though, I feel like I've been manipulated by every story that starts off like that xD
It'll probably be so awesome to have something you wrote actually between paper and sitting on your bookshelf. If you managed to write that many words, it should still be classified as a novel, even if you can't publish it and make money from it.
I have a job in hell Sesame Place, but it's closed during the week for school now, so there's like one day a week where I can stay up all night to try and get some writing done without having to get up early for opening on weekends or for classes during the week. I just don't know how some people do it.

Sorry for the late reply; I meant to respond yesterday, but I got sidetracked trying to edit that last chapter before bed. xD
As for comics vs prose -- what I've found is certain media are just better for certain stories than others. It's the reason why "the book was better than the movie", as it were. For example, you might have an action scene that is a lot of fun to watch, but would be very boring to read. I think that's why I like to read/write a slow burning ship in prose. You really get to experience the characters and their thoughts in a very close way with fiction. Comics are great, but you don't get the same narrative, first-person feeling that a book would give you.
On the flip side, comics have great visuals. You can illustrate a background scene or show the readers what the characters look like easier with a comic. Action scenes are also much better in a comic than a book because of the visuals.
(And as a side note, the nature of the Sonic fandom prefers comics to fan fiction, so way more people read my comics than read my stories. xD)
But I like using both media! I want to do a quicker relationship for Sonic and Metal in a comic to experiment with different story telling techniques, but I'll never stop writing slow-burn metonic fiction either. xD
That's good that you get one day off at least! Honestly, sometimes the best way to make progress with your writing is to just pick one day and be really persistent. Even if you only write 1k words one day a week, that's still 4k words by the end of the month, and that's enough for at least a chapter of a story. Still, if you're anything like me, I always end up wishing I had far more than just 1 day to write. xD

Oh yeah, I read that last chapter you posted and I was getting a little worried that Metal might not be able to catch up and they would get separated again. You had me so worried there. My poor little heart can't take all this stress xD
I remember watching the first three Harry Potter movies before reading the books because I was too young to want to read something so long, and the scene with the Night Bus was one of my favorites in the movie but I could barely slog through it in the book.
I like when people draw a bunch of images and then write out the part of the story that goes with it. I followed a Nuzlocke Comic a while ago and the artist didn't have enough time to draw out the entire comic, so they just drew one image and turned the rest into a story.
I end up spending most of my time planning and researching things for my story and never actually writing the thing. There was this time I spent an entire afternoon on google earth trying to find a city or town in Germany that was located near the Black Forest area for a Slenderman story I wrote in 11th grade for my Creative Writing quarterly. That's probably the only time I've every actually finished anything. I do find out a lot of interesting thing though, like this time I wanted to know what happened if you set fire to a container of bleach. (Good things don't happen, 10/10 do not recommend)

It certainly was very emotional.. As you can see in Metal's eyes here, you always do a good job at making him emote perfectly fine for being a robot. I'm glad he came around and Sonic cheered him up.
It's not often I find a good well-written multi-chapter fanfic, so I'm happy. ^^
