Description
A quickie: a heavy-duty phaser pistol from the TOS era. It's a one-piece unit, there is no detatchable cricket phaser. Also: attempt at realism in Mental Ray.

Pretty neat, I like it as a mid-point weapon between TOS and TMP. Does it have a reflex sight like the original and Wah Chang laser pistol?

I like the design. Love the picture quality. From the shadows to the reflections of the trigger and emitter, this looks like a photo.Β
Did the Polaris' crew carry these against the Kzin?

Thank you very much!
No, this was for Starfleet only. In fact, the Polaris carried around a stack of old Pike-era hand lasers as well.

It's the small "Type I" phaser. The term "cricket phaser" is an unofficial, fan term.

The Type 1 Phaser usually attached to the top of the Type 2 where it becomes the control unit for the Type 2.
The Type 1 is designed to fit in the palm of your hand and is often used by Starfleet as an undercover or backup weapon when the Type 2 cant be carried. The name cricket comes from the sound it makes when it fires.

Actually they make the same sound.Β The name comes from a hand-held noisemaker that has it's origins in WWII used for covert signalling.Β The noise make did sound much like a cricket, hence the name.Β This is a WWII type "cricket" www.amazon.com/D-Day-Signalingβ¦

It was so small on the original TOS phaser as well. TV magic, you know

Well, technically, a small button is more than enough a trigger for an energy weapon.
But from the haptic side, it would be better to have something you'd actually have to pull.
Reduces accidential activation, in my opinion.

I love that it's a bunch of subtle tweaks to the original. Definitely looks like a heavier duty version. Nice work.Β

It says in the OP it's a one piece unit and no detachable "cricket phaser".
