Description

A team was sent in to ensure operations were still continuing. The Operators of the Grotto doesn't like it when a research site misses more than a few daily reports. Typically the Operators would let it slide but given that there was nothing promising being reported by facility, Site U-4, the Operators are more than willing to pull the plug on the research and cut their losses. It all relied on the check-up team to see if the site has anything to save themselves from getting the ax.

    Then the team went silent.

But not without transmissions being received live throughout the mission. The briefing took highlights of the transmissions:

Team Leader: “Reaching the entrance to Site U-4. We tried to communicate with the research team but there wasn't a response. Permission to override locks.”

    Command: “Permission granted, proceed.”

    -skip-

Team Leader: “Labs and corridors are a mess. There are no signs of the research team. I'm splitting up the team to cover more ground.”

    Command: “Copy that. Proceed.”

    -skip-

Team Leader: “[incoherent screaming] [small arms fire]”

Command: “Repeat that. I didn't hear any of that.”

Team Leader: “[firing continues until munitions seemly emptied] [running footsteps] [heavy panting] [incoherent rambling]”

Command: “Report in now team leader. That's an order.”

    -skip-

Command: “This is your last warning, failure to report in will result in your termination, team leader.”

Team Leader: “I don't know what to report. Team has been wiped out.”

    Command: “Explain, team leader.”

Team Leader: “Silencing radio. I got to keep my attention on my surroundings.”

Command: “You are not permitted to shut off communication. Explain what happened, team leader. Or else you are terminated.”

    -Radio silenced but still connected-

Team Leader: “[clattering] [Obscenity] How did you find me?! Get back! I'm not sharing the same fate as my team! [gun hammer click] [Obscenities] [Struggling] [Agonized screaming] [Death rattle] [Soft wet noises]”

    -End of highlights-

The entire recording was archived and the highlights were provided in the mission briefing for the next team. The “rescue” team. On the Opel ride through the country side to Site U-4, the second team did some mental preparations for the mission. Their equipment was being carried by a jeep behind them and will be provided to them when they arrive to the site.

They all heard the highlights at the briefing. Reactions were mixed. Some were curious, some had a grimaced expression, and some had a nonchalant blank expression. One of the curious ones kept the highlight reel and listened on repeat throughout the journey. Her firm feminine finger pressed the stop button and the rewind then played. She pressed the headset cup tightly to her ear to hear it over the rumble of the truck engine and crackle of thick tires on a dirt road.

“It's morbid that you are listening to that man's panic and death over and over again, Lox” A young man smirked. “Or are you trying to desensitize yourself from all emotion like Reaper and Lug?”

“I'm studying every aspect of the highlights. Going in without knowing what's ahead is what got the first team eliminated.” The listener, Lox said as she rewind the highlights to before the young man interrupted her focus.

“Just what do you expect to study? The team went in and they all died.” The young man scoffed.

Lox sighed. She turned off the highlight reel and took off the headset. She looked to the young man.

“I'm studying every aspect of the highlights. Most importantly what we could possibly be walking into and what danger it could pose on all of us.” Lox said. “I'm interested in why the team leader said something about not sharing the same fate as his team.”

“What? Dead?” The young man scoffed. “I don't want to share that fate either.”

“But how did they die? Communication device input is in the ear and the output is near the mouth.” Lox explained.

“So what?” The young man rolled his eyes.

“So why was the gun hammer so loud in the recording?” Lox asked.

By now the rest of the team was listening and interested in her speculation.

“The gun was in the team leader's mouth. He wanted to die by his own hands. Why would anyone self terminate? Unless he witnessed something that was more horrible than simply being dead.” Lox said as she looked around. “What is this fate the team leader wanted to opt out of? What killed the check-up team?”

No one had an answer but everyone wanted one. That question seemed to shut up the young man and she now has peace and quiet to return to listening to the highlight reel on repeat for the rest of the ride. Each listen gave Lox a little more detail to work with.
