Description

The survivors that was barricaded in the infirmary consisted of 6 researchers and 2 agents. Now the team could assume there is somewhere between 23 to 33 crazed flesh eating ghouls roaming throughout the facility. No matter how much the number goes down. No one is safe as long as there's one still shambling along.

One agent was a demolitions specialist that went by Boomer (1022), very original. The other agent was Mackerel (9806), a door unlocking specialist much like Lox. The researchers labeled themselves as different species of birds. Robin, Albatross, Blue Jay, Mockingbird, Vulture 1 and Vulture 3. Vulture 1 was the site overseer, the weasel researcher by the name of Dr. Lorenzo Schnurrhaare.

Dr. Lorenzo Schnurrhaare was one of a dozens of weasels the Battle Master appointed to research and develop scientific breakthroughs for the Tediz. Lorenzo's demeanor being described as menacing is an understatement. Lorenzo didn't care what it took to achieve his goals, no amount of death was too much for the experiment. He viewed both his researchers and subjects as the same thing. Expendable for the greater good. That being his life and the success of this project.

Lorenzo's stare was very fitting for his label as Vulture 1. He watched you like you were knocking on death's door, ready to swoop in and consume you. Eyes hungry with interest about what was currently happening. As well as for his own well being. It was this trait that had him stepping forward the moment Minx walked in as the rest of the team were sneaking in through the door.

“That one was bit. Execute that one.” Lorenzo coldly ordered Reaper.

Minx was confused and frightened as Lorenzo stepped forward and the others were backing him up with the intent to kill. Being the meek scared rookie, Minx didn't realize that she had a machine gun to defend herself with.

“I don't follow any orders that isn't given by my commanding station.” Reaper replied as he stepped between the weasel and Minx.

“Disobedient creature. You lot follow the word of a weasel as if it is God's will.” Lorenzo said. “But that's besides the point. Kill that one now or else we will have another one on to worry about.”

    “Explain.” Reaper said.

Lorenzo shined a tiny flashlight into Minx's face. She covered her eyes from the light.

“Its eyes aren't misty yet.” Lorenzo said. “The bite must have been a few minutes ago. You roughly got an hour before you fully turn, half an hour before you start showing signs.”

“What do you mean turn?” Minx started to cry. “You mean turn into one of those things out there?”

“Its making too much noise, it will attract the rest. Kill it now, quietly.” Lorzeno replied.

Reaper stepped in and raised his gun, not at the rest who looked ready to bludgeon Minx to death, but to the ceiling.

“Sobs and whining don't compare to a 32 rounds of a MP-40 being fired until empty. I asked for an explanation. Explain everything. I think we have time for it.” Reaper said.

Lorenzo narrowed his eyes at Reaper. The mirrored black tint of the goggles probably hid an unwavering stare in return. It would be a stalemate if it weren't for Minx sobbing.

“I don't want to die and I don't want to turn into one of them.” Minx cried. “Isn't there another way?”

“If there was another way, don't you think we wouldn't be locked in this facility with the horde?” Lorenzo asked, he didn't need an answer. “The moment one of them sunk their teeth in you, your fate was sealed. Emotions and pain will mean nothing when you turn but it will make things a whole lot worse for us.”

Minx broke down, trying her best to stifle her sobs. Reaper kept his gun up.

“If you're so concern with her turning, then why did you send out a researcher?” Lox stepped up. “In matter of fact, he's going to turn because he was bitten and dead when we got to him. He should be one of them by now.”

“Bitten and dead is the key wording. As long as someone is still alive and bitten, their brains are still active, their heart still pumps, and Validus is getting every nook and cranny of their body. Each and every cell is infected. As soon as it reaches 100%, then it will turn them into one of them.” Lorenzo said still looking at Reaper. “ Being bitten and dead stops the process. Is that the explanation you wanted?”

“Symptoms after half an hour?” Reaper asked.

“Short periods of vacant staring and lack of awareness of surroundings.” Lorenzo stated.

“Then we'll wait until that occurs. It's more humane that way.” Reaper said as he lowered his gun.

Minx didn't want to hear that. She let out a cry and Lox knelt down to hold her mouth shut. Lox comforted Minx by holding her tight and profusely apologizing for something that wasn't anyone's fault. But it was someone's fault. Reaper was the one to send a rookie in all alone after seeing what happened to an agent minutes prior. These researchers and scientists made this “Validus”. And it was Lox's fault for forgetting the unlocking device and taking so long to retrieve it.

Lox began tearing up as well. She's partly responsible for Minx's impending death. Lox was about to cry with her teammate. This was Minx's first mission and it will be her last. This isn't fair for Minx. This isn't fair for anybody.

“Pull yourself together, agent.” Someone said. Lox couldn't hear who said it over their accumulated crying of the two.

At first her mind jumped to Ketchup. His ass kissing is always keeping him from reading the room. Lox was ready to finally explode with the pent up anger from his nonsense. Looking up and saw Ketchup looked like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. Reaper was the one that said it.

“Missions are always a matter of life and death. Our job as agents are to carry out the missions as successfully and efficiently as possible.” Reaper continued to chastise his blubbering subordinates. “In order to do that, we have to remove our emotions and our fear of death. We were trained to be proficient soldiers.”

Lox mumbled something in protest. Before Reaper could order her to repeat herself, she said it louder.

“We're not soldiers. We're tools. Cold and unthinking tools who's only purpose is to carry out orders.” Lox let out through a growl and tears. “We don't think for ourselves and it only leads to us dying by our actions. If we all put a little thought into our actions, then Minx wouldn't be dying.”

Reaper knew what she was saying. Ever since he sent Minx through the vent, he regretted it. Her death is all his fault. That's why he had to be the one to do it when the time comes. Reaper kept looking down at Lox for a couple more seconds before turning back to the others.

“What was your plan? Sealed away in this tomb with these things until you all starved to death?” Reaper asked.

“So we've thought. We learned that the zombies...” A researcher stepped up, Albatross.

    “The what?” Reaper asked.

“Whatever you want to call them. Any form of light makes them active. We tried to shut off all the lights but realized that in order to do that, we needed to shut down the generator. But the generator is also what powers the facility doors.” Albatross explained. “We didn't know that until after the agent we sent out turned off the generator. By the time we tried to leave in safety of the darkness, we found the middle hall lined with the inactive zombies and the doors sealed shut.”

“It was most likely that the agent we encountered upstairs is the one they are talking about.” Lox spoke up. “Bitten before he flipped the switch and turned on the catwalk.”

Minx winced and whimpered when Lox mentioned turning. She was scared, which was good that she was still emotional and aware of her surroundings. Lox held her tightly and rubbed her back and apologizing for killing her, reminding Mminx of her impending doom.

“The power's on and the doors are unlocked. The only problem is the horde between us and the one and only exit.” Reaper said.

“Actually it's probably not the only exit.” Another researcher said, Blue Jay. “Just through that door is the crematorium. That's where we burn the expired test subjects. There's a vent shaft that leads straight up to the surface.”

“Then why haven't you used that to get out?” Reaper asked.

“There isn't a way to climb up. I figured some could scale the shaft and tie a rope or something at the top and we can climb up.” Blue Jay said.

“If you can't climb up it, what makes you think we can?” Reaper scoffed, crossed his arms and shaking his head in disbelief that these people excelled in the scientific academia.

“Didn't Command issue an agent specialized in cave spelunking to your squad? This site is an underground cavern.” Blue Jay replied, taking offense that he was talked down to by a muscle head agent.

I still have communication to Command. I can request that they send help. But that will take a few more days to get here if Command will grace us with the extra personnel and equipment.” Reaper said as he stepped aside.

Reaper: “New intel coming in, Command.”

Command: “Good timing. I'm reporting back with the chain of command's response. You're mission still stands and you aren't permitted to retreat and you will not receive any back-up. What's your new intel, team leader?”

Reaper: “What the [obscenity]! Get off of me!”

    Command: “Team leader. Respond.”

    Reaper: “[screaming obscenities]”

No one was paying attention to Buck, who was standing by the door after it was barricaded back up. While everything was playing out, his mind kept on zoning in and out without anyone noticing. Lorenzo was too focused on the agent that had the bite mark to look over the others. Then maybe the weasel would have noticed the symptoms that were very apparent on the rowdy rookie. Right now, Buck was a rowdy and very bitey zombie.

Buck was snapping his jaws inches away from Reaper's neck. Reaper was pushing back for dear life with one arm pressing hard on Buck's neck. The researchers and two agents stayed away and Reaper's team sprung into action and tried pull Buck away. It was suspected earlier but now Lox knew for certain that these crazed flesh eating ghouls were strong. Impossibly strong.

Being held and pulled by three muscular agents and being pushed by one wouldn't last forever. They would grow tired but Buck lost the ability to grow weary and gained the unstoppable urge to consume. Then they did grow tired and their grip slipped. Reaper stumbled back and Buck was on top of him. The snapping jaws sailed down at breakneck speed to bite off any meat the dripping teeth can sink into.

Command was still trying to get a hold of team leader.
