Description

The door to the main facility lead onto a catwalk leading to a center tower with a stairwell going down. Around them was an expanse of darkness, even with the beam of a flashlight, the cavern walls were barely visible. Shining downwards was a 75 foot drop onto jagged rock.

The team was already on edge from their gruesome discovery. The echoing metal clanking of their feet on the walkway in total darkness added to their unease. The rhythmic steps only intensified as the six of them went down the stairs eventually reaching the ground.

The ground was smoothed out during construction so that there was a fine even path connecting the facility areas and the stair spire was the center of the path nexus.

“These power lines will direct us to the generator.” Reaper said as he shined a lite at a tangled mess of wires.

The wires lead them to a small shed with an antenna tangled with wires like a web. Lug and Buck kicked the door open and did a quick sweep from wall to wall.

    “Clear.” Buck nodded in assurance.

Reaper entered. Finding the breakers and the power switch. Slowly the facility lit up one area at a time. Loud clicks of flood lights shined down onto the ground and pointed upward to shine the facility buildings that were built into the cavern walls. It looked like a factory was being swallowed up by the earth. The corridors and rooms showed life through their windows with lights turning on area by area. The rumble of the generator working gave life to the once deadly silent cavern.

“Now that we can see. This mission will be a whole lot easier.” Ketchup nodded and crossed his arms. “Work smarter, not harder. That's another team leader trait our fine leader exhibits.”

“Someone's perky now that we're not potentially surrounded by savage ghouls that can rip us apart.” Buck said with an eye roll. “That's just out here. There's no telling how it is in the facility.”

“We have enough firepower to take on anything coming our way. The reason the last team was wiped out was because they were only there for a check-up and possible site termination.” Reaper said as he exited the generator room. “They were unprepared and lacking the firepower to fend off hostiles.”

“This place is huge, where would we start?” Minx asked.

“The only place to start. The main entrance to the facility.” Reaper said as he lead the team to the blast doors.

These doors were much bigger and bulkier than the other door. Easily 2 tons of solid steel. They couldn't open these doors without the power. Lox went in to start unlocking but stopped when she realized the holster was empty. She checked other pouches on her belt as if the unlocking device could fit in them.

    “What's the problem?” Reaper asked.

“I seemed to have misplaced my equipment.” Lox hesitantly answered. “Now I know I had it on me when we entered the lounge. I think I set it down when we were examining the body.”

Ketchup scoffed at the unprofessional action which annoyed Lox.

“It will take long if all 6 of us goes. I hate to say this but you and someone has split from the group and get that device.” Reaper said. “Return back to the group asap.”

Lox nodded and looked over who should accompany her. She chose the only smart decision in her head. The massive slab of muscle. Anything would be intimidated and deterred from trying to attack. She gestures to Lug and the two jog to the stairs and quickly climb. It feels great to finally see their footing and able to run because of it.

Once at the lounge area. Lox went to were she last seen the body but stopped when she had seen that the body of her fallen comrade was gone. Dragged off by what ever is down here tearing people to shreds. And the device might have somehow tangled itself around the body. Very improbable but still likely since she didn't wrap up and put away the cords after she was done using it.

She didn't need to tell Lug the news. He noticed that there was a trail of blood leading to the west door. There was a silent mutual agreement that they needed to follow that trail in order to find the device. Lug was the one to slowly open the door and Lox was the one to open fire on anything that moved. Only there was nothing running out towards them. Just silence of the messy room on the other side of the doorway.

This room was the dormitory and mess hall combined into one big long room. On the other end was the lavatories. The dormitory was putting it nicely. Each room was just a simple bed with blanket and pillow with a nightstand and lamp with movable partition boards to act as walls. The mess hall was just a few tables with a fridge, oven, cupboards, and a sink lining the wall on the corner next to the lavatory door.

This room was just as messy as the lounge, even more so with the cupboard doors torn off their hinges and any food or utensil ransacked. There was still the lingering scent of rot, that means the dead agent is close and whatever took him is close as well.

The first thing to do was to check under each bed. Which wasn't too much of a chore since there was only a few dozen beds. Lox got on her hands and knees and shined her flashlight under the first few. Lug realized it would be faster if he dropped his gun and helped lift each bed up so that Lox wouldn't spend more energy than needed. Even taking a couple minutes is too long for their simple device retrieval objective. Reaper is no doubt getting irritated by their extended absence.

That wasn't the case when they were too busy with their new plan of entry. It was Minx that noticed the ventilation grate. It was big enough to have a snug crawl through and it looked like it would take them to the other side of the blast door. A few kicks and it was open. Minx was the smallest and was the one to crawl inside. There must be an override switch inside to open the doors in case of a fire.

Minx got through and immediately broke down in a fear fueled stupor. No matter how much the team called out to her, she could not answer due to the mind numbing terror she is seeing at the moment. Bodies, a lot of bodies. They were sprawled out on the floor, all looking like the agent she saw a few minutes prior. Their flesh looked like someone grabbed and pulled until it gave way. Limbs were ripped off with shredded chunks reaching out. All of them had blood around their mouths and some had flesh stuck between their teeth. Minx was hyperventilating and tears were filling up her goggles and short circuiting the tech.

“This is no good. She's not responding and she's locked in there separated from the team.” Ketchup said irritated that things went sour just because one team member forgot to pick up their equipment.

“Go get the others, the reason they're not back by now is probably because they're in trouble. I'll stay here and keep trying to get 5625's attention.” Reaper said.

Buck nodded and he went. Reaper stared Ketchup down and he got the hint to accompany Buck to help the others. Lox and Lug weren't in immediate trouble as Reaper thought. Instead they were shocked and speechless. Lox was speechless. Saying nothing was part of the norm for Lug. What they saw before them was beyond explanation. It's beyond reality. Yet there it was standing before them in the lavatory entry way with no eyes, a broken jaw that is forever open, and entrails spilling from his stomach.

“What?” Was all that Lox could say, she was anchored to the spot by confusing and a growing sense of fear.
