Description
Lorenzo finished explaining everything. Of course he left out the technical stuff that would be lost on everyone but the other researchers. Such as the chemicals, the variables, everything that involves science and biology. All of that is tucked away in his brain and the notes scattered around the facility.
Lorenzo still has hope for this project. The Operators of the Grotto wants any and all successful projects. Technically Project Validus is successful, they accomplished their goal of making unstoppable super soldiers. If word gets back to them, the Operators might continue funding the project. But for now, it's the rescue team's job to collect the notes and it was Lorenzo's job to survive this and oversee the future of this project.
Archiving projects is the most important thing for the Operators. Archiving projects could mean that the project could be reinstated and the notes and reports will be readily available to new research teams. The Operators learned from their mistakes and won't have another Devil Project lost. It is fact that if Reaper's team fails, another team will be deployed to collect and rescue the project. And should that team fail, then another team. So on and so forth.
This won't end until the papers are tucked away in a filing cabinet or computer folder in the Grotto. This realization is now the driving force for Reaper. He just realized that an agent team fell before they arrived, two of his own rookies fell, and countless more will fall all for the Operators to finally get what they want. It's best to end this circus before it truly gets started. They have to accomplish this mission. They will have to collect everything that they can before leaving.
Reaper had to think of a plan and he did it within minutes. He pulled the remainder of his team aside and told them what he thought up It was a quick and simple plan and it goes as follows:
Split the team into one half leading the survivors out and the other half collecting notes and equipment. The surviving researchers are vital because they have important irreplaceable knowledge that is important for the project's future. They will be lead outside to safety and eventually brought back to the Grotto. As the Escort team head out, they will need to lead the hostiles out of the main facility and lock them out to make collecting easier. They will also have to find a way to seal the site so that nothing can get in or out. After Collection team gathers as much notes and equipment as they can, rendezvous to crematorium. The team outside would need to find the vent to the crematorium and lower down a rope that they will have to find. If they can't find a rope, then the wires of the lights will suffice in the bunker. Collection team will climb out and then it's a report to Command that the mission was accomplished.
Considering the dire situation and the low morale, they couldn't do anything else other than agree to this plan. They just want to get out of here before anyone else suffers through what Minx and Buck went through.
“It's a good plan an all but shouldn't we split the Escort team up. Half leads the researcher's out and the other half lead the hostiles out and lock them out of the facility?” Ketchup asked.
“You can do that. I'm appointing you leader of that team.” Reaper stated.
Ketchup's eyes lit up when he heard that. Perhaps it was Reaper's intention to raise his subordinate's morale with that simple statement.
“Turning off the generator worked well the last time. Only this time the hostiles will be on the other side of those doors.” Reaper said. “Collection team will have to do their job in the dark. It will be difficult but not as difficult as being attacked by unstoppable ghouls.”
“Who will be part of collection and escort.” Lox asked.
“I'm for sure will be collecting.” Reaper replied as he went to grab the case from Minx.
Lug offered to be part of collection team by picking up Buck's case.
“You're going to need an unlocking device for the labs you won't be able to get into through the windows.” Lox said, as she offered to take Ketchup's case. “We should keep it to 3, the less the better.”
Reaper nodded and looked to Ketchup.
“Let's see your leadership skills in action.” Reaper said.
Ketchup turned to the survivors. He knew that if he had a future as a team leader, he needed all 6 researchers and both agents to stay alive. Of course Ketchup will have to employ the help of the agents for their experiences in combat and field.
“I'm getting you all out of here as well as going to need help shutting down the power to this facility and sealing this place off.” Ketchup triumphantly announced to the survivors.
The survivors were too exhausted and irritated to find a fraction of hope to match Ketchup's new found attitude. Sure they wanted to get out of here but they suffered through a living nightmare far too intense to shrug off.
Reaper stepped up to Boomer.
“You're specialized in demolitions. Sealing off this place won't be a challenge, right?” Reaper asked.
“I'll be sure to cause a cave-in on our way out.” Boomer nodded.
Reaper reciprocated the nod and returned it. The team leader would try to regroup with the other collection team members but Lorenzo placed a hand on Reaper's shoulder and made him face him.
“I overheard your plan. When you do go searching around. Find my gun. A peon took it without asking and I'm assuming they're dead out there.” Lorenzo explained. “Bring it back to me. It has sentimental value.”
“You mean this?” Reaper asked as he took it out of his belt and showed the weasel the Mauser.
Lorenzo reached for it but Reaper pulled it away suddenly.
“You were quick to kill my subordinate at the sight of a bite wound. You can't blame me for thinking that you'll use this to slow the others down for your own escape.” Reaper said. “I'll hold onto it until I'm topside.”
The weasel narrowed his eyes at the team leader. He backed down knowing that it wouldn't even be a struggle if he tried to take the gun away from him. That agent was right, Lorenzo totally knew that he would shoot one of the others to act as a distraction. That assumption was well warranted and very clever.
One of the researchers peaked out of the window and saw that the corridor was clear. The researchers went to work dismantling the barricade. He and Lug handed their MP-40s to Mackerel and Boomer.
“You will have to get their attention and get them through the door. We will know when we'll get to work as soon as the lights go out.” Reaper said to the two agents. “I'm recruiting you into my team. Your objective is to keep these researchers safe and follow the plan. 2295 will inform you the details. He is interim team leader until we regroup on the surface. Follow every order he gives you.”
Pretty soon the barricade was gone and the escort team slowly left the infirmary single file. Reaper, Lox, and Lug patiently waited for that team to turn off the lights..
