Description

The west wing was a long corridor that angled slightly to the left a few times. The windows to the left looked outwards to the cavern that the facility was nestled in. The center stairwell and the generator shed were illuminated by the floodlights as their immense glow reflected off of the cavern walls.

The windows to the right were showing the team the many labs in which the researchers once worked tirelessly on whatever they were working down here. Eventually the team are to enter these labs to collect any and all vital research notes and equipment. Some labs wouldn't be a problem to enter because the windows looking in were shattered which blood stains present.

It was clear that something tried getting out of the facility as well as into the labs. The evidence of this was tiny spiderweb cracks. The exterior windows were nearly indestructible compared to the interior windows. The team could try shooting them out, but for now they followed the sound of the gunshots moments earlier.

There was no one in the labs from what they could tell, so they continued to the end of the corridor that came to double doors with circular windows to peak inside. To right was a smaller corridor that lead to the upper level that was the observation deck. That was put on the back of their mind, right now they focused on getting in there and finding their lost team member.

Reaper peaked in and saw that this was the main lab with the table with straps. There was a gurney on its side, lab equipment and papers were spread all over the floor and a lot of blood. It was dried on the floor and walls.

“Clear.” Reaper said and motioned to the others to move in and opened the door quietly.

Buck went high and Ketchup went low. Reaper, Lox and Lug covered their six. Guns drawn, they all scanned the room wall to wall twice over.

“Clear.” Reaper stated and motioned to spread out.

    Not clear.

Reaper realized that his single utterance of a word got the attention of something that was hiding behind the overturned gurney. With a wet smack and gnawing of flesh in its jaw, a researcher slowly stood up. It's glossy eyes slowly looked over the team and focused it's attention on the closest one. Reaper.

“Don't move!” Reaper barked the order as he pointed his gun.

Reaper was quick to assess the the situation, his cold tough demeanor sheltered him from freezing up in fear. He knew what a hostile was the moment it reared its grotesque head at him. What he didn't know was that the hostile wasn't going to be following any aggressive orders of an armed commando or be deterred by aggressive voice of an armed commando.

The researcher shambled its way around the gurney. Fresh blood and flesh poured from the jaw, down the chin and onto the scrubs and floor. Much like the ones encountered by Lox and Lug, this one also let out ghastly moans and reached forward for the person they slowly shambled towards.

Reaper figured the best course of action for the moment was to shoot out the knee. It worked for a moment but the researcher slowly corrected its stance and continued towards the team leader. He shot the other knee and only repeated the processes of staggering and slowly getting up and continuing the slow shamble.

“I got this, boss.” Buck said as he stepped next to Reaper and raised his gun at the researcher.

Like firecrackers being set off, Buck unloaded a few rounds into the researcher. The recoil of the machine gun started at the chest and peppered up into the neck and jaw. The researcher stumbled backwards only because of the force of the impact of the bullets. It corrected itself and went back to shambling towards them.

“What in God's name?...” Ketchup was utterly appalled.

Reaper and Buck took a few steps back and steadied themselves as they both took aim. With short controlled bursts, they kept on firing at the vital areas that they learned in training to focus fire on. Then stopped to reload as they backed away from the shambling researcher. Lox finally had enough of this tomfoolery and stepped in and let loose the thunder of gunfire into the side of researcher's head.

The researcher didn't react until the side of his skull was just a bowl of blood and brain soup and fell to the ground like a sack of bricks. Lox didn't stop from their, she continued firing onto the head until it was a vile and gruesome rendition of swiss cheese made of a person's head. The only thing that stopped her blind fury was the click of an empty chamber and magazine.

“Sir. You told me to report it after we find Minx. I apologize for disregarding orders but this is what I was trying to warn you about.” Lox said with a shaky voice and with equally shaky hands as she kept any eye on the bubbling mess of what used to be a face. “The research team is fucking mental and nothing can put them down.”

“It looks like you managed to put this one down.” Buck said as he knelt down poking the gore with his gun barrel.

The researcher jerked its hand and tried grabbing Buck but he backed off.

“No fucking way.” Buck said as he back into the wall.

The team was mortified that the nearly headless researcher was still trying to grab for them but wasn't able to get up. Reaper disregarded the grotesque researcher and went to see what it was snacking on behind the gurney.

With a sigh of relief, it wasn't Minx. It was another researcher, still clutching a recently fired Mauser pistol in his hand. Reaper pried it out of the dead man's grip and placed it in his belt. He turned to his team and saw that they were staying clear from the gurgling mess that was on the floor.

“Are you saying that there are two of these things on the upper level?” Reaper asked finally wanting to listen.

“A researcher and the agent.” Lox replied. “Both shot in the head and both are still walking.”

“I can only assume that the rest of the research team in the facility is like this and add the check up team to it as well.” Reaper said as he stepped to the side and contacted command.

Reaper: “Reporting in. The missing team member is still no where to be found. Requesting information from the archives, how many researchers were in the facility before going dark and how many were assigned to the check-up team?”

Command: “Stand by. Requesting for the information. I'll report back to you as soon as I get them.”

Reaper realized he couldn't wait any longer. There was a massive slam that came from the other side of the doors leading into this lab. The hail of gunfire must have attracted the attention of more of these crazed unstoppable ghouls. Lug peaked out on of the circular windows and saw a shoulder to shoulder horde shambling their way down the hall towards them. Lug turned to gesture a number. A dozen, maybe more.

Reaper had to quickly assess this situation. A dozen or so ghouls were coming down on them. They were cornered in this medium sized room. There was zero hiding spots. He, Buck, and Lox was down a magazine and even turning the head to semi mush doesn't stop them. Things were looking hopeless and they are sure to be eaten to the bone by the piranha.

Then Reaper remembered the highlights and what Lox speculated.

“Get back! I'm not sharing the same fate as my team!” The previous team leader's voice echoed followed by a very loud click.

“The gun was in the team leader's mouth. He wanted to die by his own hands. Why would anyone self terminate?” Lox's voice echoed.

To spare themselves the torment of being eaten alive.

Reaper realized what must be done. He was to gun down his team and turn that Mauser onto himself. It's the preferred way to go. Reaper made sure his safety was off and he slowly raised his MP-40.
