Description Don't have a state-of-the-art Wacom tablet, a high-res Apple screen or the latest version of Adobe's Photoshop? Don't worry!
Use this simple six step tutorial with some of the most basic Photoshop tools to digitally color your favourite line art.
The coloring style I use is quite simple and is a mix of basic vexel and airbrush techniques, resulting in colored pieces like Monkey Island postcard and Cordelia ~ Jewel of the Sea .

A more elaborate, but great way to get clean line art ready for coloring: check out *afangirlsdream 's Separating Lineart Tutorial .

The original line art used in this tutorial is created by ~Patrick-Hennings , the colored version by ~TheoVision .

Ehh... Tutorial is really great, but I don't have any Photoshop. Even old version. Only GIMP. Is it possible to do it in GIMP?

It is possible it just you have to play around a little more in GIMP. GIMP is pretty much a knock off version of photoshop with a few less options here and there

This is an amazing tutorial. Really, really great and very helpful. I'm currently attempting to teach myself how to color digitally and used your tutorial as a base to color my picture [link]

So thanks so much for providing help and inspiration

I tried this out a little on some unfinished artwork to familiarise myself with the process but I had to skip a step--after loading my line art (pre-created with the Pentool in PS) & selecting it & creating a new layer-when I filled the line art it made it all Jagged, rough and ugly looking. I tired a couple of things, like contracting the fill and smoothing it but didnt seem to make a difference.
I kept my Original line art as a copy and tried the process, was easy to follow tho I havent completed an new stuff yet! Other than that minor issue Pretty useful!

I'm going to try and apply this technique, I don't have a tablet so my lines are shakey but I never thought to color them as in section 6.

TheoVision In reply to cheetahka [2012-02-09 14:37:43 +0000 UTC]

The pieces I've colored are all done with a traditional mouse, so it can be done!

cheetahka In reply to TheoVision [2012-02-10 05:37:08 +0000 UTC]

you are sooo cool Im gonna work on it. I went to try and find some red/blue colored refills for mechanical pencils but epic fails im gonna have to buy them on line. I end up just giving myself a lot of extra cleanup work on my lines cuz I press to hard. If i can get past that I can always go strait to coloring with your technique. Or try to I'll give ya a buzz when I get a new piece colored.
