Description
HEY KIDS, it's me again with another tutorial.I've also got some resource stuff, especially to help with coloring characters and getting some unique colour combos.
What you'll learn from this one:
- Firstly, I go on about using bases and screenshots. If you use either of these and don't want hurt feelings, you might want to avoid this one, however, there's also some sort of "pep" talk to keep on practicing. I even show my OC and her changes over the years. You don't need to re-make your OC entirely to make it cool!
- Second, I have an easy and quick way (and tutorial for fishnets, but read this too, ok?)
- Thirdly, I talk about bandages on shinobi.

Well, I don't like using bases and only used one so far. Hoping to draw my character by hand soon and scan her into my computer to do a nice image of her! x3 And thank you for that color wizard link! I'm definitely checking it out!

I use bases for fun and they have helped me, it's a "too each his own" situation. I used good bases to help my understanding of anatomy, and help me learn hos to pose and use references in drawings. Also Photoshop isn't free, and advertising to use pirated program is against dA policy, and if it's find out you use pirated programs you can get into serious trouble.
Other than that, great tutorial!Β

TECHNICALLY, you can download it for free. A trial is still a free download. Β I have not told anyone to pirate anything, therefore, I am within the rules.
Also... please don't defend your art to me. It really does not affect me.
I'm glad you enjoyed my tutorial.

Heck. Someone finally said that bases don't help!
Totally agree with everything you said there...
Β
Though I do think colouring over screen shots do in fact help-- that is-- if you do it properly and not with paint; BUT I am against posting it online since the 'original' is not truly yours. Yet, I think it does help because it helps you learns the way of how the manga artist draws eyes/proportion... And once you are mehhh- without bases/screenshots I think you can start drawing on your own using tutorials and lots of practice...?
Β
IDK ((Sorry about the English,really.

Using screenies is the EXACT same process. Double standard, in my opinion.

Agreed... I've never touched a tablet, but I'm still trying to improve with mu mouse Takes time and i end up not finishing half of my drawings, but I think I'm slowly getting better... That's why we're here, right? To keep drawing and making it look better? maybe if I wasn't so lazy and practiced more...
Now I may make myself an OC... Who knows x'3 Great tutorial~

So I know a lot of people use tablets but I don't know really what they mean, like iPads? Or are there tablets specifically designed for drawing?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to shinda-ai [2013-05-27 04:14:13 +0000 UTC]
I'm really sorry, I can't tell if you're joking. I want to say you're joking.
But just in case:
The first thing "tablet" referred to is a Wacom drawing tablet. It's also called a "pen tablet".
Say "tablet" to an artist (professional or a semi-to-very serious hobbiest) and this(for drawing) is what they will think of.
Some tablet, which are tremendously expensive, have a screen on the drawing surface, the basic ones, that most artists use, have no screen directly on them.

Lol. A little late to this convo! But to be honest I didn't know what a tablet was until my junior year of high school. Not everyone knows about them. No offense Β anything.

I would like to point out as well that having a tablet doesn't make your art better or make you a better artist. I get so very sick of people fawning over someone just because they use a tablet - and vice versa - if you're a good artist with the practice you don't need a tablet and I also hate when people fawn over the artists who can pull off nice pieces in crappier programs with only a mouse. If someone is honestly a bad artist, buying that $160 tablet isn't going to do them any good, it's just wasting money unless you practice diligently.
Buying a tablet also doesn't instantly improve your quality of work. It's not at all the same like drawing on a piece of paper. It's a completely new way of trying to make art and takes time to learn and master. I remember buying my first tablet thinking it would be easier than using my mouse since it's so much more like drawing on paper...WRONG. It can take weeks, if not months, to make your tablet art on the same level as you do on paper...

ThirdEcho In reply to Prongy [2013-02-01 18:11:29 +0000 UTC]
I at -no point- said having a tablet made your art better. I said not having a tablet (or a better editing program than paint) wasn't an excuse for doing a shitty job (also, you can get a tablet now for a min of $60).
At no point was it said a tablet was easier and I at no point told people to go out and buy one. I have never, ever, told anyone that learning to use a tablet is easy and am always sure to let them know about the hours of work needed to use it well.
Please, with all do respect, don't send me your angry, slightly rude, misdirected text walls.
It's not fair to me to get not-so-nice rant-messages that give me your negative vibes. I don't want your bad mojo. Please keep it, I have enough of my own to deal with.
If you wish to reply, please do it with a better attitude. I cannot even handle more of this today.
It's not your fault I can't handle the crap today, and I don't want to seem like a bitchy child. But pleeaasseeee, grab some better mojo if you're replying. Please.
~Peace.

Figures I can't find this deviation when I'm actually looking for it XD
To clarify, I wasn't being negative. The message wasn't supposed to be angry.
You had said in the tutorial something along the lines of "you don't need a tablet to make great art" and I was only expanding on that in a constructive way. Whether you use a tablet, a mouse, or even a pencil on paper...what you use doesn't matter until you put the time in to make yourself better...is pretty much what I was getting at.

ThirdEcho In reply to Prongy [2013-02-01 18:32:41 +0000 UTC]
You can always bookmark or fav them if they're useful. Things I might use later I stick into a favorites folder on DA for quick reference...
It's okay. It's the internet. Studies prove we only communicate 11% of what we actually say with the words themselves. It's understandable.
Yeah, I did say something like that. I mostly said it because I don't like people who make up excuses. "I'm too tired," "It's late, so it sucks," "I don't have a tablet," "I've never taken act classes (because that totally matters)," etc. I still get them. ;__;

Prongy In reply to ThirdEcho [2013-02-01 18:38:47 +0000 UTC]
Love the "never taken art classes" excuse.
Neither did I until college...and even then I could have TAUGHT the class better than my professor. Maybe it was just a fail college though XD
It's like riding a horse...it's ALWAYS you, not the horse (or in this case, drawing implement).

Since I moved, the CC I'll be going to later on will allow me to be automatically accepted into any state Uni as long as I get good grades.

I don't understand university separations like that. In Canada, it's just as easy to get into the top university as it is the lowest...
π: 0 β©: 1
Prongy In reply to ThirdEcho [2013-02-02 00:40:01 +0000 UTC]
I wish it was like that here.
For "community college" you just sign up for classes and you're supposed to go maybe four years and then apply for a larger university and hope you get in. America is so backwards compared to pretty much everywhere else.

how many hours a day would you say you dedicated yourself to learning how to draw?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to Little-pear [2012-08-21 03:19:54 +0000 UTC]
Me? Er... well, this summer (since May)? I think I've only drawn like 10 things (yet I get mad I'm not improving. Makes total sense). I get half way done and quit, sometimes.
When I was in high school I drew SOMETHING every day. Maybe a sketch or elaborate study-doodle, but I always drew something. In university... I just don't have time. Especially because I've been preparing to study in Japan in 2 weeks. I would say study outside of drawing itself is just as important as actual practice.
π: 0 β©: 1
Little-pear In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-08-21 22:57:03 +0000 UTC]
so, aim to draw at least one thing a day, sounds practical. I know what you mean though, I'd be drawing something, and then just quit, and never finish it. I guess that's why I haven't improved
Thankyou for answering
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to Little-pear [2012-08-22 00:16:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, when I "doodle" I figure out something new everytime. I don't draw a lot because I also do theoretical studies and whatnot on my own, so every time I draw something I see a huuuggeeee improvement on something I HATED about my drawing style. So I think 's not necessarily "one drawing a day," just more "learn something about art once a day".

Wow, your tutorials are so helpful and informative!
I'm currently trying to figure out a Naruto Oc...
Maybe I should have asked this on your name tutorial, but what do you think of the name Kohaku for a girl? I was searching for sites with japanese names on google, and one of them said that Kohaku could be male or female.

ThirdEcho In reply to rubynymphe [2012-08-03 19:05:30 +0000 UTC]
It can be, but typically anything ending in "haku" is a boys name. It's like naming a boy "Evelyn," it's unisex; just plain strange.

Nice job. And good job with the kimono it looks great. Your character looks much better not that it looked bad to begin with, but she certainly stands out from other naruto ocs.
Also just a suggestion since alot of Naruto fans will put their ocs in Kimonos or Kimono like outfits. Unfortunately 50% of the time they make major mistakes on how to properly put a character in the kimono (though these mistakes are very small). The biggest mistake is they put the wrong side of the kimono on top (you got it right with your oc). The left side is always on top (like i said you have it correct). You should do a tutorial on kimonos and other outfits found in Naruto that are different from outfits in America. its just a suggestion.
