Description I'm not doing this to be a blow-hard, but due to popular request by several deviants I have now begun my "Naruto OC Tutorial" series.

Why did they ask me? My Naruto OC "Aki Hyuuga" has gotten me a lot of notes and an "ok" amount of comments/favorites due to her strength in design and over-all character. Basically, she's what a lot of Naruto OCs are not, which is strong and believable. Or something. Whatever.
What makes a strong character is exactly what I was talking about in the first bit of this: you've gotta get in the creator's head. Your character should be (as close as you can) like something the series creator would make himself. I found her notes in the early Naruto mangas very helpful for creation... if you know what to do with the knowledge.
University Undergrad student thinks TOO much, it's a curse, not a blessing.

The reason I'm so capable at analyzing style is because of the practice I get as a Liberal Arts university student, who's studying "social history" (like media). Yes, it's quite boring. I'm happy to use my skills to help others!!! <3

Hi,

I know you said not to use google translate, but I'm having a hard time figuring out a name (full first name) that means 'Silver Fox (of the) Night Sky'. I'd like to incorporate the word 'Yozora' because 'Zora' means fox in Spanish and her clan are fox summoners. Yozora also means 'night sky' (or so google translate said before I read this) If I can't use Yozora, is there another meaning for night sky that also has a portion that means 'fox' somewhere in the world? I know 'Kizora' isn't exactly Japanese, or anything really, but it too incorporates the word 'Zora' which is kind of a running trend in her clan. Her clan has also been protectors of the Nine-tailed fox since ancient times (since Kurama first began roaming the narutoverse, not necessarily when he was first featured, but since he was actually 'created' so to speak.) Also, I originally created a story for it, but when I read Nuttynuti's Mary Sue prevention tutorial, I realized most, if not all, of my characters were Mary Sues. So, now I'm doing a complete renovation, and cutting out most of my stories. This story is the one I decided to keep, because it had the best chance to be saved. If you could tell me a good translation for the above and if Yozora can be saved, it would be much appreciated.

*Edit

By 'the above' I mean 'Silver Fox (of the) Night Sky'.

**Edit

So far I've gotย ้Š€็‹ๅคœๅคฉ, but I have no idea how to check it if google lies.

Is Yukina (Definition from Source : From Japanese ้›ช (yuki) "snow" combined with ่œ (na) "vegetables, greens." It is often written ใ‚†ใใช using the hiragana writing system.)ย Nakajima (Definition from Source : From Japanese ไธญ ( naka) meaning "middle" and ๅณถ ( shima) meaning "island".) alright?
This name could make sense if she loved winter and vegetables, especially broccoli and Brusselsย sprouts, but had aย disliking of mushy things likeย spaghetti squash, soggy zucchini and other soggy foods,ย and cashews, but loves pecans. ย That just seemed to be a suiting thing to place, heh heh~.
I'm still working on OC Form, but maybe I'll edit this and link it when I'm done, I don't know. >w<

Well I'm creating my OC a little differently than usual. I've generated a name and basing the OC off of that name.ย
On the generator it gave me the name Kotone. I'm excited to find a last name that fits, as well as something that fit with her.ย
Maybe she could be a Sound nin or something! This is the first time I'm actually going to follow through with making a Naruto OC.
This is very exciting for me! ^_^

This is a really good tutorial. I like how it goes in-depth about the names, and there are many useful tips for brainstorming names.
For a character, I have the name Kaida. I'm not sure about a surname yet, but does that seem like a good first name?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

freewolf17 [2014-05-10 21:21:08 +0000 UTC]

Meh... When it comes to the name (forget about how it is written, for this it does not matter) I have noticed in the Naruto verse it doesn't freaking matter. I seems to be 'pick a Japanese word and there you go'. I am not talking about the fan made characters, I am talking about in the anime and manga. Especially once I started hearing the names people got in Kumo... So really aside from 'Kawaii' (which frankly if that character was put in Kumo I don't really think anyone could say jack shit about it considering the naming system there) anything is fair game...

I'm not some butt hurt noob, I have actually been around a while in the fandom and have seen it all and done some pretty crappy work in my early years. I'm just saying given what has been presented in the series there is barely anything that could classify as a 'bad Narutoverse name)...

Yup. The laws of Japanese names do not strictly apply to Naruto. Kishi probably said, "You know, this my world and I say fuck the rules!" and that is what we got.

I'm making an oc whose clan specializes in hojลjutsu (basically restraining people with rope or cord.) I want to use the kanji "็ต" meaning 'tie' or 'bind' in her name for obvious reasons, and I've tentatively chosen Yua (็ตๆ„›) as her given name. I'm pretty stuck on a surname, though.ย

Hey so I've been working on a Naruto OC of my own & I've settled for the name "Kazuhiko Sora". I did much research for a long time to create a name with meaning & without making up words. I believe that when it's written as "Sora no Kazuhiko", it translates roughly to "Prince of the Sky" or "First Prince of the Sky". While I haven't provided any character details, I was just wondering if the name was at all applicable; or in other words if the name was one that could/would exist in the world that Kishimoto had created.

Sora = thanks to KH, one of the most over-used OC names ever.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JimmyWhiteEdge In reply to ThirdEcho [2014-02-28 02:41:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm not familiar with KH nor am I interested in the frequency of how much the name Sora is used. My goal was just to put together a name that had a specific meaning correlating with my character & one that I liked. Unless there's another name for sky in Japanese, then that's what I'm sticking with.ย

So, I have been thinking about making an OC, but I SUCK at names... Like, really bad ^-^;
I have come up with Natsu/ๅค (Summer). She uses fire-style jutsu. However, I can NOT FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY COME UP WITH A LAST NAME. SO, I was wondering if you could give me opinions on her first name and help with a last name?

Get me a first name that isn't retardedly over-used and we'll talk.

Your tutorials are amazing!!! (Although I think I've have already said ... can't remember if I posted yet)
I'm always searching for new names to help me name my characters.
Eventually I came up with this
Hiniku Umeko
Hiniku as in 'irony ็šฎ่‚‰' and Umeko as in 'Plum child ๆข…ๅญ'.
Your so good as things like this thought I'd ask about your thoughts on it~

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ThirdEcho In reply to Akemi146 [2013-06-23 16:11:35 +0000 UTC]

I DIDN'T KNOW IT COULD BE WRITTEN THAT WAY. AS A FOREIGNER I'M LOSING MY FUCKING SHIT. THAT'S SO FUCKING FUNNY. The Japanese have some funny kanji combos for meanings. ็šฎ and ่‚‰... did you bother to look up their individual meanings? DID YOU? I HOPE YOUR CHARACTER IS FAT. THAT WOULD BE SO FUNNY. I WOULD DIE OF LAUGHTER IN A GOOD WAY.
AHAHAHA.... ็šฎ means "skin" and ่‚‰ means meat. ่‚‰ was actually one of the first kanji I learned and it still reads as "niku" (meat) when used alone. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. It's not awful as it keeps with Kishimoto's "weird" character name meanings, but it's a really funny name. Umeko is an alright name, it's used quite a bit, but mostly for Uchiha and Uzumaki OCs, for some reason.

You might want to re-think your last name of "hiniku" (I assume it is because Umeko makes no sense as a surname), however, it would be strange to have a clan called "irony". They would have to be a buffoonish clan of fools or notorious jokesters to make sense. Or fat. You could also go with fat (AHAHAHA).

On it's own, it's not bad, but with the meaning in the surname... you'd need to make it work.

I'm glad you like my tutorials, I plan to do more... they just take SO MANY HOURS TO DO...

Akemi146 In reply to ThirdEcho [2013-06-24 05:29:24 +0000 UTC]

oh wow XD
You saw through it huh? I actually was gonna make them a clan thats really useless XD I called her Umeko, cause I was gonna make her look like a plum (Wight size included.)
But seriously? Uchiha and Uzumaki?
I can kind of understand Uzumaki if she had red hair or something but Uchiha doesn't sound right. Oh well, their opinions I suppose.

Thanks XP I plan to work on my naming skills anyway~

I can imagine, but they're seriously helpful.

Thanks so much (and your tutorials are really helpful!)

ThirdEcho In reply to LadySola [2013-06-05 19:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Congrats, you're the second person in over a year who suggested a name (either first/last or both) that doesn't suck. And I'm one hell of a hard judge.... Only problem is that you can't use that as a last name, kanji-wise, because ใฎ (no) is not a kanji, it's a particle (meaning "of" in this case).

If you're dead-set on the meaning, ๅคฉๆ˜Ž or ๆ—ฉๆš would work (Tenmeii and Sougyou, respectively) better, as they are without particles, which cannot remain in names. If not, I can look up some alternatives for kanji which would hold the same sounds in a name.

LadySola In reply to ThirdEcho [2013-06-07 02:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Wow really? Thanks!

Oh I see, thanks for clarifying about the last name.

Hmm, Sougyou sounds interesting. But if it isn't too much trouble could you look up some alternates with that meaning for me please?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ThirdEcho In reply to LadySola [2013-06-07 21:04:15 +0000 UTC]

There aren't more words for it. There are other words meaning "sunset" but none that I know of for "sunrise". I know words meaning "dawn," but in terms of "sunrise," that's it. My Japanese friends couldn't even help me with that one. ๆœชๆ˜Ž/Tenmei can be read another way, as Mimei. Then there's ๆ—ฉๆœ which reads as Souchou (so-cho) but means "early morning" (but that IS when the sun rises). I hope that helps. :/
