Description
I'm not doing this to be a blow-hard, but due to popular request by several deviants I have now begun my "Naruto OC Tutorial" series. Why did they ask me? My Naruto OC "Aki Hyuuga" has gotten me a lot of notes and an "ok" amount of comments/favorites due to her strength in design and over-all character. Basically, she's what a lot of Naruto OCs are not, which is strong and believable. Or something. Whatever.
What makes a strong character is exactly what I was talking about in the first bit of this: you've gotta get in the creator's head. Your character should be (as close as you can) like something the series creator would make himself. I found her notes in the early Naruto mangas very helpful for creation... if you know what to do with the knowledge.
University Undergrad student thinks TOO much, it's a curse, not a blessing.

The reason I'm so capable at analyzing style is because of the practice I get as a Liberal Arts university student, who's studying "social history" (like media). Yes, it's quite boring. I'm happy to use my skills to help others!!! <3

That is interesting, given the fact that we really do need our names.
I wonder how japanese people don't get confused.
I personaly know like 5 people named Dimitar, and if they had no surnames it will take a lot of time to explain who are we talking about...
ok, are those good choicess?
Amaya Kamisawa/Kamihada (though the second reminds me of Kisame's sword a bit too much...and i already have one male Hinata )
Keitaro Mori/Sunamori
Thank you for the help, really!

I think for my character Kaminari, I believe she really follows the guidelines this tutorial instructs.
She uses lightning type jutsus and her name is the name of the japanese goddess of lightning.

Er... "kaminari" is another name for "Raijin", a -male- Shinto God who is depicted as a demon, there for a negative connotation for a name... making this character sound like they're an antagonist??
"Kami" is male, "Megami" is female (for gods).
(I'm not telling you what to do, but I just wanted to give you a heads up)

Google isn't your friend, unless you look several places and rule out which sources are reliable. I'm in university and I have to do that constantly, so it's understandable that I'm able to look find better sources sometimes. No worries.

I referenced a popular anime character's name as an allusion to my Naruto OC first name. However, it can go either way as acceptable or not. I would like to name her 'Reira Kano'. I just need a second opinion. If you could respond, great, but I know everyone is always so busy.
Thank you so much! ^.^

Actually if you read the manga:
Reira in not japanese name (though it's cool ) It's just that her name is layla and they cannot say L and say R
π: 0 β©: 0
ThirdEcho In reply to HerForsakenSpirit [2012-12-15 10:08:42 +0000 UTC]
Reira doesn't particularly sound Japanese. I personally feel that belongs in a sci-fi universe or something with cool tech-stuff and a fast pace, like car racing. Kano sounds alright, probably as a first name in the Naruto universe by the feels it gives me. Personally, I feel that Kano and then a long-ish and easy to pronounce Japanese name would be fitting.
But that's just my take on it.

HerForsakenSpirit In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-12-16 05:27:59 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's what I thought. >.< I got the name 'Reira' from the popular anime series 'NANA', and thought it would be edgy, yet Japanese enough (the NANA character was half-Japanese and half-American, and was named Reira for the English equivalent of Layla). I still want to keep Kano as her last name, however. Thanks for your help! ^.^ I'll continue on my search to find a name that better fits my character and her personality.

ThirdEcho In reply to HerForsakenSpirit [2012-12-16 10:32:58 +0000 UTC]
Kano in itself is still edgy. I hope you're able to create a character that it works with.

ThirdEcho In reply to CuteKoi2903 [2012-11-17 09:27:04 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that's indeed true, however, I think ninjas can also get away with using Ainu (the Native people of Hokkaido, Japan's northern-most prefecture). Although not all ninja names bear meaning, it's really only the sounds. Using names that are American is just as bad as using clichΓ© Japanese names, like Kyoko, Nami, Haru, Naoko and so-on, or using names that are too freakin' long.
So I wouldn't say "strictly" Japanese without taking it with a grain of salt. There are also Japanese names that would be kind of strange to use, like "Kohe" (I have a friend by that name). It's simply gotta work, and it's not something one can teach. For an example of non-Japanese names, the 5th largest city in Japan (and also where I live) is called "Sapporo". "Sapporo" isn't of Japanese origin at all and isn't even written in Kanji. You can get some cool names out of Ainu, like Hibarigaoka (it's a smaller place within Sapporo).

I have been browsing the 'fandom' for a bit. How about Kitai Senko?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to AskBeyal [2012-09-19 11:29:32 +0000 UTC]
Senko is probably a poor choice.γSenko(εε) means something like 1,000 (not thousand, generally, but the number 1,000 specifically) and SenkΕ (ε°ζ») means "university major".
Kitai... alsoγkitai (γγγ) means "strange", in a bit of a scary sense... maybe.γIt also means (ζεΎ
) "hope" in the sense that you expect something from the future. I think it may also mean gas in some cases...
Source: Please refer to where I live. xD
Also, in addition, it's probably best to use actual Japanese names, as that's what the author does 90% of the time. For example, my OCs name is "Aki Hyuuga". Aki means autumn and Hyuuga means sunny place (she was first named after the Japanese battleship from WWII, the "Hyuuga" because she was an oc of a totally different fandom).
You don't have to use names for people, places and Japanese things are also interesting. Japanese cities also have some neat names. I live in a place called. The name should also tie into WHO THE CHARACTER IS. My character is defined by autumn leaves, therefore, "Aki" is appropriate. MOST Naruto characters have names pertaining to who they are, for instance, "Neji" means "spiral" (as in the shape), hinata... means sunny place (it can be written in the same kanji as Hyuuga????)
If it's a girl, you can also think of plants to name her after. Kaede (OLD OLD OLD NAME) means maple leaf, Momiji means Japanese maple, Kikyo means... "kikyo" (it's a cup-shaped purple flower), Chaki means tea tree. Japanese people... like... plants. I have a friend named Tomoka, the kanji in her name means "a friend who is strong like stone".
Neat, huh? Then again, some names have -no- meaning because the kanji doesn't make up a meaning, they simply look nice. My friend Kana's name is this way.
I'm here to bounce ideas off of, if need be. I've done it a bunch of times. I hope I was informative and not harsh...

Satomi Tanaka? Sadly i have no idea what that means <.<
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to SLsweetlollipop [2012-07-26 22:50:29 +0000 UTC]
Satomi's common Kanji are ιηΎ, which is "village beauty" (the kanji, respectively, say this). The name itself is an older name (like Alexandra, Victoria, etc... though those are names of "finesse").
Tanaka is hardly a unique last name, it means "in the rice field" (η°δΈ). All traditional Japanese surnames have simple meanings. I have a friend whose last name is "akai", which means "red-well".
Tanaka is probably a very poor choice for an OC's last name (probably the most over-used surname for an OC out there). Satomi is so-so in terms of usage. I wouldn't call it "unique", but it's not necessarily the worst.
Hope that helps.

This tutorial was SO helpful, considering I haven't watched Naruto for some time now!
About the names, I'm having more trouble with my OC's last name than her first. I want her to belong to a clan, are there any specific rules for that? Obviously an OC cannot belong to the Uchiha clan, but is the Hyuuga clan better (if she's a distant clan relative)? Or are canon clans too Sue and I should just make my own?
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to Zweenii [2012-07-26 22:56:01 +0000 UTC]
I'll be legit, my OC is Neji's half sister (different mother; undesired and unrecognized daughter) and she's pretty powerful, but her family history has pretty much caused her personality to be... less than favorable. She doesn't particularly have many friends and she's not anyone's "favorite". I also have her murdered by the Konoha ANBU forces due to "shady activity" and over brutality. Cheerful, huh?
You could probably pull of a canon relationship (by blood; romance is pretty much a no-no), but it would be kinda tough. I can help you if you'd like. An idea to play with is also the idea of a rival clan. The Aburames even have one in the lightening village. If you whanna do rival clans, you need a strong (not by stats, per say) character.
I'm happy to be here to bounce ideas off of. ;D

Zweenii In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-07-27 12:57:23 +0000 UTC]
Christ, I haven't even thought about any romance! She doesn't have a pairing yet... Or if I even want one at all... I've been too caught up with her abilities to venture into those waters!
Your OC sounds totally cool, I think I've seen her around before... My OC is kind of the opposite. The clan I thought up for her doesn't care for ninja training (not for the girls, at least) so while all her male cousins went to the Academy, she was taught to stay home and smile prettily for a potential husband. She rebelled her way into the Academy very late in life, which is why she pretty much sucks at ninjutsu and taijutsu. (Her genjutsu is pretty strong though...)
Since I was making her pretty weak physically, I wanted to give her a bloodline ability, just to balance things out. Possibly something to do with the eyes (cliche, I know T__T) and a mirror theme. Sort of like a jutsu-reflecting... kekkei genkai. But understanding the kanji behind naming it and coming up with a name that makes sense was so difficult, I was almost like, "Screw this. I'll make her a Hyuuga and give her a Byakugan instead." Which is why I asked, to see if it was too Mary Sue or not.
But now I sorta came up with Tenkyougan (Literal trans: Imperial Mirror Eye)... I'm still not sure about how powerful to make it, though. So yes, I would LOVE to bounce ideas off, thank you so much!
And sorry for rambling! I get carried away... T__T

@___@ I'm one of those people whose like "OKAY. SHIT TON OF IDEAS. PUTS IN SMALL SPACE" and then smooths them over and edits. I'm too ADD for anything else.
Gotta keep in mind that it's also mandatory for girls to learn "womenly" arts at the academy to blend in for recon. Sakura and Ino can be seen learning to arrange flowers, therefore, that MIGHT be a strength for her. She could suck at pretty much everything but if her skills in "regular women shit" come naturally and skillfully, she could pull off some pro long-term recon. Therefore if you just said "she's weak as fuck" you'd have to add that her stereotypical-lady skills make her a serious BAMF for such work. Her weakness is... well, weakness and that she's screwed if caught.
If she's a Hyuuga, she's a fighter.
Mirror eye... sounds a lot like what the sharingan do by name. Maybe make it just work for automatically countering all illusions and setting them either exactly what the opponent threw or some edit done by the member of said clan?
Shoot away.
I ramble. I'm a fucking history student. That's all we do.
π: 0 β©: 1
Zweenii In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-07-28 16:22:24 +0000 UTC]
Omg, you nailed it, that's kind of exactly what I was planning for her. The first few years of her life, all she practically did was learn manners and etiquette and languages and other "girly" stuff. Since she doesn't have much strength and a "glass jaw", I boosted her intelligence and memory. She knows up to three languages and she art of charming and seduction, which she uses on recon missions - which is practically all Konoha sends her out for.
When she's in trouble, she mostly just talks her way out of it, but when she's in serious shit, she either relies on her genjutsu or her bloodline ability. Which is why, even though her level of chakra is above average, she still doesn't have a lot of stamina - majority of it goes into creating an advanced genjutsu technique.
That's what I was thinking too... The Sharingan would allow the user to copy the jutsu and do it himself. But when the Tenkyougan is activated, the opponent would feel the effect of any jutsu he throws. What I'm unsure of is whether the the kekkei genkai should tie in with her genjutsu abilities. If it did, then the opponent would only IMAGINE that the jutsu is reflected on himself. If it doesn't, then the jutsu really is reflected back on him.

ThirdEcho In reply to Zweenii [2012-07-28 17:59:36 +0000 UTC]
Only issue is that seduction is probably doing to backfire in the sense that sleeping around isn't the "best" way to get info. She'd have to keep a low profile. Like a clumsy waitress or maybe even pose as a working woman (shopkeeper, maid, cook, etc).
For someone like that it sounds like she would be more focused spying on Lords, aristocracy or warriors, not ninja (remember, there is a large non-ninja population). A illusion mirroring kekegenkai would mainly only work on shinobi, therefore, she would just need to be good at escape. Look into the specialties of Shikamaru, for instance. Traps, tricks and illusions. Screw talking, that can end badly. You'd need a balance of the two.
The way monks believed one could grow chakra was meditation, which would also make her very calm and collected (keeping a clear head with minimal panic).
That would work as long as it followed some rules:
1) The victim must be able to see the user's eyes.
2) The damage was merely psychological; they THINK they can feel it. Psychological effects last a variety of times.
3) It the effect would have to have a set time to wear off (20-30 minutes max, maybe) and the user would have to have a cool-down time of maybe twice that.
Remember that the mind is man's greatest weakness and asset. Not knowing the truth can really fuck someone up.
Here's a really great place to set ideas in stone: [link]
You can even see my OC there.

Zweenii In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-07-28 19:47:33 +0000 UTC]
Oh god, I just realized how that sounded! O.O I didn't mean seduction as in sleeping around! I meant it in the whole 'flirting for information' kind of way. That isn't full-fledged seduction, so I'm not sure if you could call it that... sort of like what a geisha does would be the best way to describe it.
Yup, I thought of making eye-contact vital and the damages would be psychological. It would be kind of scary to think you're feeling the effects of whatever jutsu you just cast.
Thanks for all the help! ^^ It really helped me figure a lot of stuff out - along with your tutorials! Are you thinking of making more of those, by the way? Maybe an OC X Canon tutorial to add to the set, since I've noticed that's where majority of the OCs tend to falter, with making the canons OOC and all...
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to Zweenii [2012-07-28 21:41:03 +0000 UTC]
Geisha do not practice seduction. They're merely supposed to be beautiful and intelligent women that men can consort with in a socially acceptable fashion (Traditional Japanese culture prohibited it otherwise, for the most part).
Some people who are possessed "feel" things that aren't there, like being on fire.
OCxCanon would be short, it would just say: "Don't do romance with a cannon, and if they're related... be motherfucking careful."
I do plan to do more. The weapons and ninja tools one shall be next if there's a demand.
