Description
I'm not doing this to be a blow-hard, but due to popular request by several deviants I have now begun my "Naruto OC Tutorial" series. Why did they ask me? My Naruto OC "Aki Hyuuga" has gotten me a lot of notes and an "ok" amount of comments/favorites due to her strength in design and over-all character. Basically, she's what a lot of Naruto OCs are not, which is strong and believable. Or something. Whatever.
What makes a strong character is exactly what I was talking about in the first bit of this: you've gotta get in the creator's head. Your character should be (as close as you can) like something the series creator would make himself. I found her notes in the early Naruto mangas very helpful for creation... if you know what to do with the knowledge.
University Undergrad student thinks TOO much, it's a curse, not a blessing.

The reason I'm so capable at analyzing style is because of the practice I get as a Liberal Arts university student, who's studying "social history" (like media). Yes, it's quite boring. I'm happy to use my skills to help others!!! <3

You should do a tutorial for personalities. I've seen so many original characters with a PERFECT personality that absolutely everyone loves and they don't have any flaws. It makes for a super boring story, and I think the problem is common enough to call for a tutorial.

Go to a baby name website and look for ones of Japanese origin, unless you have a Chinese-type character like Rocklee or Tenten.

I'm thinking of the names Keiko or Kohana. I looked at them on a baby website, so i hope they're japanese. :0)

Keiko is a wee bit over used and Kohana sounds too much like Konoha, but if you did Hanako (same meaning; flower child), it's less used and more convincing.
(I love names)

My friend and I have just started thinking about making OCs...we've got some issues though: you see my friend wants his OC to be a samurai and I have nothing against it. Only thing is, is that we have near to no info on samurai. What's more is that he wants him to have no lips because of torturing which results in an expression similar to The Joker from Batman, wants him to be a rogue samurai who traveled the world to gain techniques, have an ice element bloodline and a sword similar to the one Arlong had in one piece...I'd like to know your thoughts on that and if you can a way to keep it naruto-like.
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to KonfettiToss [2012-03-06 15:07:58 +0000 UTC]
The no-lips thing is going to be hard to pull off, unless he's drawing at an abnormally high level, I'd just go with a nasty scar (at the corners of the mouth)... In order to make him not look like the Joker (specifically, once you able to say "like _____" it's lost originality), he'd probably have to be an older character (like Jiraya), especially if he wants it to work well.
Basically the worst thing you can do to a samurai is cut off both pinky fingers (that's actually what was done), because after that, they can no longer hold a sword properly. To fuck with a samurai, appendages (like fingers and toes) would have been cut off or wounded. Slicing his lips off wouldn't have been a torture technique because after that no one could understand him; torture is used for interrogation only, which needs the victim to have the ability to talk.
From what I know kekkei genkai/bloodline traits are limited only to ninjas. If I'm not mistaken, they are developed using jutsu -- something samurai do not really have.
The samurai from Naruto, from what I can tell, are slightly more technologically advanced than the ninja and they rely 95% on their swords, giant hammers, etc.
Samurai would be going for not jutsu techniques, but experience and skill. Try researching samurai for a better understanding. There isn't much info on Naruto samurai because their country is so small (they have a country, too!).
I could attempt to make a Samurai info base like this, I suppose....

Good job : )
I'm sure and don't need tutorial like that, but I think it would be useful for people who doesn't know as much about Narutoverse and Japan.
I just... don't like your explanations of character's names. I think you took shortcut and skipped the major genesis of name (for example Kakashi's name was a joke and it references to ninjas that used to disguise themselves as farmers, the symbol came after that and Ino's name came from Hanafuda along with Shikamaru's and Choji's - together they make a card game formation).
π: 0 β©: 1
ThirdEcho In reply to rcmHitori [2012-02-25 19:24:55 +0000 UTC]
I don't have time to sit here for hours and hours and hours to make those kinds of explanations (this tutorial alone took 2 hours, rather than the other that took 4). If I wanted to do a mass character info session, I would, but this is a tutorial, not a history lesson. It needs to be as simple as possible. My information isn't incorrect, so there's no problem. If you don't like what I've done, feel free to make your own.

rcmHitori In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-02-25 20:18:40 +0000 UTC]
The point is I like it and I appreciate your work.
What I meant was that short informations are not wrong as far as they contents the most important information, not some minor fact. I know that true fans would find the full explanation beyond name by themselves and short info is enough to show "how does the names works in Naruto". I'm just massive Narutard and I felt something is wrong while reading the explanation part. I have right to say what I think. That's what's the comments are for.
But still I hope you keep on doing those tutorials and have fun with it, because they seem VERY helpful : ).
btw I think you are bit oversensitive when it comes to critiques. Chill out. Now one is here to slaughter you ; )

To be honest, I do far too much for other people on here. This stuff is painful to make, it's long, hard and requires research on my part. I've even randomly drawn people's characters for them (with all the effort needed) to teach them how to make small alterations to make the character a little stronger visually. X___X I'm ridiculous, and am used easily.

Good job, though I do like to point out that Itachi actually means weasel and in Japan, they are seen as death and bad luck. In the Western world, it used to describe sneaky people.
For me, I think of what would fit the characters and personality and the meaning on the names and kanji (I studied Japanese and took two years of school and have dictionaries to help me).

ThirdEcho In reply to YukoISBadMedicine [2012-02-25 02:31:46 +0000 UTC]
Not by kanji it doesn't. It just generally refers to large rodents.
I've been studying Japanese for almost two years... I'm preetttyyyy sure I know.
Tsukio can, maybe... but it's more just the kanji for moon and night, so it may just easily mean "a night with moon" or "night moon".γMoonlight is actually "ζε
" (gekkou) which are the respective kanji for moon and bright. Haruka is a stronger name than Tsukiyo, it's hard to make strong names out of the blue like that. Baby name websites actually prove useful in many ways...
Seriously, Google translate hates people. It gives you the wrong translations and unless you're only going to check to see if you're right, it's useless...γIt says that "δΊ¬" by itself means Kyoto... It doesn't...

I didn't use google translate, but my Japanese books and sites and his name is written in katakana while it is written in hiragana (I always double check. but seems kind of weird why Kishimoto did that) in the dictionary I have. I couldn't find rodent or the kanji for Itachi though so I had to look it on an online dictionary which said gesshirui.
Tsukiyo is an actual name that I looked up and what is said it meant. Names can be different than words, even if they have the same meaning(I always look at names first and use baby name sites). Haruka was way too common with OCs (I checked) and have a friend with an OC named Haru so I had to change it and it was actually more fitting for her. yoru is night ε€ while Tsukiyo is written as ζε€ moon and night.
These might help-

It was to equalize the names to indicate less of a sense of familiarity with Konoha and try to make some differentiation between Naruto's world and actual Japan.
Yes, I'm aware of this, it's not a common one, it's rather strange, however. It's almost as shocking as a name with "maru" at the end. It's just so old that it's hardly used. I don't know what Japanese text book would have such an old name in it.
Book are great... but I also asked my roommate... who's from Japan (around Tokyo). It's just a strange name all together.... maybe not strange, just not.... hmmm.... smooth? Augh, I can't explain it.
Some names are not common on Naruto OC because they only fit-so-so sometimes. Names are difficult. Which is why a tutorial will only go so far... it's unfortunate.

YukoISBadMedicine In reply to ThirdEcho [2012-02-25 03:35:04 +0000 UTC]
I think the names like Orochimaru came from some old stories or myths, I would have to double check on that but I think it comes from Jiraiya GΕketsu Monogatari. Sasuke Sarutobi come from some folklore about a famous ninja.
Yeah names are difficult but some names in Naruto are pretty weird lol. Naruto is a fish cake in ramen. XD I am still wondering why they picked that.
Names in Naruto often come from objects (Neji can mean screw. Uchiha is a play on word of uchiwa non folding fan and fire I think-to fan the flames), animals (snakes, birds, deer, pig, scorpion etc...), myths (Amaterasu, Susano'o and Tsukuyomi are shinto gods and goddesses) and emotions (like Omoi-think and Samui-cold while her brother's name means hot, etc...).
I'm keeping it though as I personally think it fits and wrote in Japanese as well and doubled checked it just to make sure. ^^

......... er.... I just wrote all that third paragraph, so why are you re-telling me?
Yes, but they didn't use them for names because of their style, so they used them for Jutsus, since they fit better. Yes, I'm overly familiar with Japanese folklore, you're not telling me anything I don't already know....

Oops, I hit the submit button before finished.
Anyways, knowing the meaning of the name, kanji and what you have in mind for your characters is every important. ^^
For one OC, I named her Tsukiyo, which means Moonlit night. She was a previous generation Uchiha back in early Konoha and a bit darker character and night suits her as well as with Mangekyo sharingan, Tsukuyomi means underworld and moon or moon in an underworld that is similar to hell or hades and is also one of the Japanese Gods in myth. Knowing that and the Uchiha clan, I thought it seemed fitting. Originally it was Haruka which meant distant and though it fit her character, it was too common.
