Description
The Russo-American design the Moscow Class cruiser is the Earth Federations primary middle weight long range warship. The designers at Sukhoi first drafted a warship to traverse the stars using high density slugs as its main weapon in 2067 as project Star Berkut, however the plan was to make it function as mobile orbital artillery for the 3rd World War. At the time it was Sukhoi's attempt to return to the world of military politics after several disastrous failures of Russia facing off against European Confederacy forces along their western borders. For much of the ECF's armament plan the company had failed to meet contract demands until the Moscow class was offered.
The Moscow design is unique, it is a hybrid design between Earth's first long range colony ship the USS Freedom, mounting the reactor and engines in a circular housing a central cargo hold and frontal section as a warship. With three rail guns the first measuring 500 meters long with a bore of 100cm and the next set being 470mm turreted Gauss guns (18.5 inch cannon)
The Moscow is an impressive first generation warship for humanity as it just will not quit. The first four cruisers were launched in 2083 and were responsible for making peaceful contact with the Qualurians. There were as of the year 2130 a total of 2000 Moscow class Cruisers. The ship is the pride of the Earth Colonial Space Force not out of sheer technology or fire power. Its true strength is the fact it just doesn't quit. Ships meant to replace it just end up complimenting the ship. Many commanders pride in the design comes from a lack of alien elements used to make the ship combat worth. For an earth born commander the Moscow is the pride of the Earth made fleet, but for a Colonist commander the ship is a testament to human nationalism. Whatever the reason the Moscow is a well liked design. Like every ECF design its meant to invoke an ominous defender standing against Marxists that would seek to rob and torture the honest men and women who are the ECF's life blood.
The four ships that made peaceful contact with the Qualurians were the Tacoma, Tokyo, Moscow and Osaka. These ships were eventually upgraded to the Block 3 models only the Moscow was kept in service. The Moscow Class Cruiser seen here is the block 3 entry accepting a pair of Humming Bird Dropships into its belly. All Block 3 ships are new builds while Block 2 are hybrids between the first ship production and the block 3 new build. The block 2 units were fitted with KT Beamspace drive engines in place of warp rings. This increased the troop capacity from a mere 250 to a full 750. It maintains 12 Aerospace fighters for planetary operations. It is able to serve as a troop transport due to its hybrid design of colony ship and warship. The ship was the main combat vessel during the Fedcom war. The ECF has made several attempts to out right replace the ship but its massive cargo capacity makes it hard to replace. The Armor is 4meters thick like a Warrior Class Destroyer but holds more than double the soldiers. It can ravage whole planets alone in the same manner as the Communist Union did, or use its heavy fire power as fire support. The Block 3 ship has a top mounted observation deck that gives the design an terrifying gaze. The ship is rather well built and needs very little maintenance. Despite not being at the battle of Sidonia it was the Moscow class cruiser in Block 2 and Block 3 that did the bulk of the heavy lifting. Like all human designs the ship is set up like a building.
The estimated life span of most Block 3 ships is as of the 2130s going last a least another 50 years of front line duty. Its unknown by fleet command if a Block 4 unit will have a Telsa cannon or even particle cannons added, or if the price of the Houston class will reduce in time to be fully implemented as the replacement fleet cruiser.
