There's no need to credit or link back to me if you only apply the instructions/tips of this tutorial to your own work (but adding this to your favorites would be much appreciated if you do so). A link to your work in the comments so I can see how you used it would be awesome.

•Some of the steps involve making changes that are so subtle that it's hard to tell the difference between them. I made a gif animation to accompany this tutorial so that it's easier to see the difference between the pictures in each step. It's posted here .

•I tried to be as clear as possible while still keeping things concise. I'm happy to answer questions about anything that's confusing or unclear.

That looks great so far, especially considering that you don't have much experience working in digital! Great job.

Thanks a lot for the awesome comment. I'm really glad to hear that you found this tutorial useful.

Ya I'm actually going to go back over his coat and use the dodge and burn tool. I always wondered what the dodge tool was for in ps, lol.

I couldn't function as a digital artist without dodge and burn. They're really useful tools once you get the hang of using them.

Also, I'd love to see your horse painting when it's finished. If you think of it, maybe you could send me a link when you're done.

I sure will, thanks for the input, really appreciate the feedback And I must finish it soon, it is a birthday present for my best friend, whose bday was the 22nd of May >.> but I didn't want to rush it and told her politely that her present would be in the mail in a few weeks.

will it work with mostly white-grey animal ? I heard dodge tool doesn't work on white fur

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThreshTheSky In reply to LadyAlluvia [2013-05-28 20:42:10 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. This can work for any color fur.

Dodge lights the color of the area it's applied to. So it can be used on literally any color except PURE white. And I don't mean like a white cat, which is actually made up of many very, very light shades of other colors. (This tutorial uses a mostly white cat as an example.) So yes, dodge will work on light colored animals.

I hope that helps.

Hey Thresh, finally got my first try at this tut.... It is tough! My feedback would be.....strand by strand got to be a little daunting as you can see, Tula looks like she needs a good brushing LOL..... Guess there are no shortcuts....practice, practice and practice....[link] Thanks a lot for the tutorial, I'll definitely practice again sometime soon....any additional tips would also be welcome. I did have a lot of fun and would definitely recommend this tutorial to all cat lover artists.

Ohh wow, thank you so much for the tutorial! Your art is amazing and this tutorial will be useful, I'm sure! Especially because I'm thinking about learning to draw animals now, I'll try to put it into practice.

Just a question, how long approximately does it take you do finish a piece?

ThreshTheSky In reply to rainbownote [2013-03-26 07:58:17 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I'm really glad to hear that you find it useful.

I get asked this question all the time but don't really have a good answer. I never bother to time myself and tend to work on things in little spurts over weeks or months. "A really long time" is the best estimate I have. Sorry.

rainbownote In reply to ThreshTheSky [2013-03-26 08:05:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha that's alright. I can imagine it would take an awful long time though, since just the little example patch wasn't even 1/25th of the full pic that you used. Keep up the good work!
