•If you repost anywhere, please link back to me. There's no need to credit or link back to me if you only apply the instructions/tips of this tutorial to your own work (but adding this to your favorites would be much appreciated if you do so). A link to your work in the comments so I can see how you used it would be awesome.•Some of the steps involve making changes that are so subtle that it's hard to tell the difference between them. I made a gif animation to accompany this tutorial so that it's easier to see the difference between the pictures in each step. It's posted here .
•I tried to be as clear as possible while still keeping things concise. I'm happy to answer questions about anything that's confusing or unclear.

I'd say "Anyone could do it with practice" but I know you'll just comment-slap me.
But seriously, thanks.

WOW. I knew you must put a lot of effort into your work, but seeing just how much attention to detail and meticulous care you put into everything gives me a whole new level of respect for your work. I'm pretty sure doing that would drive me crazy.
Also, this tutorial is super detailed and extremely helpful! Thanks!

"I'm pretty sure doing that would drive me crazy."
Probably. I lost the last of my marbles doing this a long time ago.
I'm glad you found this helpful. And thank you so much for your kind words.

Jeez... I can't even draw somewhat realistic fur... I am so going to go and beat myself, but this is a very detailed tutorial and very informatice, too. :3

This is an amazing tutorial~! I find it so helpful and I wonder if this same techniques can be used for human hair?
Also, you Really explain~! I've seen many tutorials here for different things and they are really confusing at times since the artist who made them don't quite explain everything and each step. I'm not saying all of them, or perhaps it's me the one who doesn't understand
I would love to see a skin tutorial from you~ That is where I struggle the most when painting

Thanks for letting me know. I've never made a tutorial with text before and didn't think it would be as hard as it was. I'm glad you found the explanations clear. I often feel the same way as you about some tutorials being confusing.
Yes, this technique can be used for human hair. In fact, the way I make hair vs fur is almost identical. The biggest difference is in Step 5 since human hair is usually a little different in length and texture. But the filter use, blending, and light adjustment steps are all the same.
I'll think about doing a skin tutorial. Though it's still the main thing that I struggle with too.

It's easy to follow and I'll definitely use it in my next paintings, when I get inspiration to actually do something~
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who gets confused with the tutorials
What do you do different in step 5?
If you do decide to make one, I'll be on the look out

ThreshTheSky In reply to Michelle-JP [2013-02-23 06:59:36 +0000 UTC]
If the human subject you were trying to paint had short hair with a similar texture, it wouldn't really be different at all. But if you were (for example) trying to draw a human with long flowing hair, you'd just do Step 5 with pen strokes that are longer and go in the appropriate direction.

That doesn't seem complicated~ instead of using the brush tool, you use the pen tool an make longer strokes
Thank you for taking your time in explaining me dear

No, I still use the brush tool. Not the pen. Only I use longer strokes. I should have said "brush strokes."
My bad.

I think you could say the same thing goes for traditional painting -- makes me want to try it and see what the difference is

ThreshTheSky In reply to wickedphoenix93 [2013-02-22 13:02:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I agree. I've found that a lot of concepts from traditional painting translate into digital. But I've come to appreciate the lack of a mess when I'm finished, not having to spend money on new materials, and having no "dry time" to worry about.
