Description I got part way through making this, then realized I wouldn't fit everything in one tutorial

This coloured pencil Tutorial covers materials, basic strokes, pressure, gradients, layers and blending. Let me know if you can't read my handwriting and I'll make a transcript.

This first part is very wordy, but people keep asking me questions and I wanted to cover all the answers. Don't ask me where to buy shit, I'm not google. D:

Next will be a Tutorial on colouring hair with CP (yes I know what it says at the bottom of this) and I'll upload it soon.

This is SO useful, just what i needed! 8D
I might consider buying a bottle of low-odor thinner, it sounds promising Is it expensive?

THUNDER-THUNDER In reply to Lil-Miss-Spicy [2010-01-16 10:52:37 +0000 UTC]

Low-odour thinners can be quite expensive ):
If you don't mind the smell, reqular paint thinners work the same and they're way cheaper.
You can get the same effect with watercolour pencils and a damp cotton bud too.

Wow... I didn't know blender can do that. In fact, I don't know that product...O_o I'll see if the blender pencil exists in my country. xD Sometimes there are some products in America that doesn't exists here in the Philippines. ;A;

This is a very useful tutorial to those who aims for traditional-style drawings. :3 Mind if I feature this?

I would be honoured if you featured this!

And as for getting a blender pencil, if you can't find them for sale locally, you could always try ordering them online.

It's so interesting how I understood most of that and already knew about some of the things you touched up on. o.o

For graphite, I use something called a tortillion or a blending stump to make it look smoother. You can tell when I use it and when I don't; I used it on Batteryman and didn't on X/Alia.

I usually do use it because it smooths everything out. But unfortunately it's kinda like the "white pencil", it kinda removes some of the shading so unless I'm lazy I have to go back and re-shade some areas..

Other times I don't use it just to give it that edgy effect, or make something look like it's glowing.

My line-art isn't that great and I'm still learning how to do things properly but I figure I understand most of this stuff and have a good knowledge of things.

Thanks for sharing this, I'll be looking forward to your other tutorials.

THUNDER-THUNDER In reply to GekkouKitsune [2010-01-11 09:51:06 +0000 UTC]

Good, I'm glad you understand it, it means I've done an OK job making it

Any yes, the colourless blender pencil is very similar to a tortillion. It works in pretty much the same way, but doesn't remove any pigment so the colours stay lovely and rich

I'm looking forward to making some more interesting tutorials. I just had to get this list of materials and basic techniques uploaded so I can link back to it if people get confused by my more complicated shennanigans.

Really interesting how you use the white blender. Sure makes a difference getting the color really smooth. I use my colorless blender for my Prismacolor markers XD
But thanks for the awesome tutorial!

THUNDER-THUNDER In reply to Nine-MileStudios [2010-01-11 09:28:05 +0000 UTC]

I find blending markers so much harder than blending CP, it only works properly if you catch the colours while they're still wet. Or do you have some ninja secrets with your markers? Come on, 'fess up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nine-MileStudios In reply to THUNDER-THUNDER [2010-01-11 19:07:37 +0000 UTC]

The biggest thing I do is not make my drawings too big. Then that way I can color one small area at a time and still catch the marker while it's wet. If I want to blend the colors on the ground, I use a pastel that's about the same color as the ground and smear it into the markers along the shading lines. As stupid as that sounds, it works pretty well for my technique.

Wow! You really know your stuff! How long have you been drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THUNDER-THUNDER In reply to spinalTapSoundGuy [2010-01-10 17:35:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've been doodling since I was in nappies, but I never showed even a hint of talent until I was 16 (5 years ago)
I took a few commissions when I was 18, but hardly drew at all when I was 19 & 20. I was working over 50 hours a week and barely had time to wipe my own ass let alone draw. I got very ill about 6 months ago and lost the job. I've been doing a lot of drawing since then, I find it cheers me up

So... in total about 4 years of "active" drawing, but I'm self taught, so I learn slowly and have huge holes in my tray of knowledge I'm nly pretending to know my stuff

spinalTapSoundGuy In reply to THUNDER-THUNDER [2010-01-10 17:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah, but still, I never thought to do things like using solvents to blend colors together. I got really decent at pencil sketching, but I don't have a scanner, so Gimp has taken over as my medium now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

THUNDER-THUNDER In reply to spinalTapSoundGuy [2010-01-11 09:31:55 +0000 UTC]

My scanner only cost me £20 anyway. But it can be very grouchy... plus there's dirt on the inside of the glass, which gets very annoying. Kudos for using Gimp though

seems we both use a simerlar style when shading and colouring with pencils, althought you seem to have access to better pencil cryons, due to this snow i havent been able to head out to get some new art supplies

anyways interesting tutorials, maby you should do youtube vids of you just drawing

LOL, I'm so spoilt. I've had my set of Prismacolors for about 5 years now, I've only had to replace the black, white and blender. So I think they're worth investing in.

I'm too retarded to be able to hold a camera and draw at the same time I need a manager/personal-slave or something
