Description A short'n'sweet conversation between and me inspired me to draw the XP-55 Ascender, Vultee XP-54, and the XP-56 Black Bullet.

Also a hint to what I may be drawing in the future, for the rest of my time on dA, take a look at my webcam.

I would have put the Mixmaster in there had I remembered it! D: but thanks though, you've given me an idea for further drawings!

oh I know the Skymaster, but not well enough, apparently. And that's my favourite Cessna too!

TomCatDriver In reply to ThunderArc [2013-05-24 00:39:13 +0000 UTC]

not too many left around now. it became a "pig" to operate at recent fuel prices, and not enough capacity to justify. one advantage it did have was that a private pilot could have 2 engines without having to obtain a regular multiengine rating, due to the 337,s centreline thrust. no worries about assymetric thrust in case of one powerplant failing, especially on takeoff.

ThunderArc In reply to TomCatDriver [2013-05-24 22:35:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that is the one thing why I love the Skymaster. Push me pull you's have the one extra chance at powered flying in an engine failure like conventional twins, but like you said have centerline thrust.

it can be a "widowmaker" if mishandled....certainly not a tinker-toy Cessna 150/172 or the like...demands an expert at the controls{yes,contempt intended!...evil old cat,i am.}

ThunderArc In reply to TomCatDriver [2013-05-25 00:25:00 +0000 UTC]

Teehee, but you're right! Different craft demand different ways to fly them correctly. A big contrast would be to fly a 747 the way that you would fly an Extra 330, and vice versa. Certainly not a thing you would want to do.

and some have potentially treacherous characteristics. some planes like the Sopwith Camel, the F4U Corsair and the Japanese "George" fighter were very crotchety and tricky to handle. if a pilot was good, they,d make him better...if he was some green kid......CRUNCH. our AeroStar is a bit "slippery" too....have to stay ahead of her by a few steps. some of these kids i see on this site would end up dead for sure. no kidding,no options.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to iron out bad habits in greenhorns.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to ThunderArc [2013-05-25 09:26:58 +0000 UTC]

it,s just a matter of some seasoning and teaching them good habits in the first place,no matter how many sadistic beatings it takes! "hate me today, thank me tomorrow"

ThunderArc In reply to TomCatDriver [2013-05-26 03:42:10 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's how it always goes. About careers, what aircraft relates job would be best recommended in today's economy, etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to ThunderArc [2013-05-26 16:23:25 +0000 UTC]

technician/mechanic or avionics/instrument specialist would be a best bet for a steady job. pilots are pretty much a dime-a-dozen,lots of ATP,s in my country looking for work. so many on layoff/furlough from airlines due to downsizing, displaced by mergers,or places that just plain went OOB. even if a trained tech doesn,t work on planes immediately after they get their Airframe&Powerplant or Radio/Electronics license,it can still open a few doors for them in many other places.

ThunderArc In reply to TomCatDriver [2013-05-26 22:08:04 +0000 UTC]

hmmm I see. I guess to perfect flying career dream is going down in flames.

Though having to work with planes in any sort of way is still awesome.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to ThunderArc [2013-05-28 09:59:22 +0000 UTC]

airlines seem to be shrinking a bit,due to the fuel costs and general economic situation of the world. fewer planes and crews, they just demand more utilization out of them. but mechs/techs are and always will be needed...the industry hasn,t as yet designed planes that can fix, maintain and service themselves...
