Description
Huge file is huge. Sorry!I finally got around to posting the process to [link]
You know how it is when you do something and it takes forever and you think it's amazing and the best thing you've ever done, and then a month or so later you look at it and pick out all the problems and hate it with every ounce of loathing in your body? That's how I feel about that painting. It has failed to live up to itself in posterity. It's the last big thing I did on my old computer and on my macbook it looks like ATTACK OF THE 80s and yikes. I want it gone from my life.
Painted in Photoshop 7 (best incarnation of PS ever) with a 4x6 Wacom Intuos 3 tablet

Not only is this a gorgeous piece, but it's a very helpful tutorial too! I've always had troubles with digital painting, especially for backgrounds, so thank you very much

Thanks, this is really helpful! Especially the part about creating your own grass brush, that looks like it would save a load of time.

100% opacity and flow. I control it with the stylus pressure. The only time I go less than 100% is when sketching something with a lot of detail.

I think it's wonderful and you do a great job explaining everything!
But I know what you mean- about looking at something you did and believing it's the best thing in the world... and then 2 months later, you look at it and you hate it LOL XD. But then again, that means you've improved

Oh wow, that's gorgeous.
I've never been big on making BG's - like most people, but I think that this has inspired me to be more...creative.
Argh, you make so much sense...haha, it's like you're actually making it while you're making the tutorial, unlike other people...idk, It's hard to explain.
Anyways, this is great. :]

Hmmm...to me, that seems like a lot of extra work! Must take a lot of patience...
Keep at it, though - everything's gorgeous. :3

wow. this is very helpful... I've been looking for something of the sort around dev for about a week now but only found weird tutorials that didn't really suit my "needs". I'm having issues about going from the phase of "some blotches and shapes" - to the detailed thing
And don't be so harsh on the painting! I think it looks GREAT!

So after you merge those first two layers, do you work with a single layer for the rest of the painting? Or is each step after that a different layer?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
thundercake In reply to Bright-ton [2008-09-16 18:09:31 +0000 UTC]
I work with a single layer for the whole painting, unless I want to try something risky, in which case I make a new layer and merge them again when I decide I like it

What brush to you use? You said you use the square oil on the wood and stuff but what about the others?
And do you use references or something?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
thundercake In reply to Rose-Rayne [2008-07-05 05:55:35 +0000 UTC]
I just use the hard round, set to dynamic opacity I don't generally use refs, no, but I am often inspired by paintings or photos of nature.

Dynamic opacity? (Still a n00b photoshop sorry.)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
thundercake In reply to Rose-Rayne [2008-07-07 04:47:27 +0000 UTC]
It's when the opacity changes based on the pressure you're putting on the pen

I know how it feels to look back at a piece and hate it...but since I didn't create this one, it's hard for me to hate. In fact, I think it's past impossible.
Thanks so much for these process shots. It reminds me how satisfying it is to do something traditional. I think I might try a one layer painting now..

thundercake In reply to Marzipanapple [2008-06-08 17:54:33 +0000 UTC]
It's definitely easier for me, since there's no crazy jumping back and forth between layers/painting on the wrong layer/etc
