Description
Huge file is huge. Sorry!I finally got around to posting the process to [link]
You know how it is when you do something and it takes forever and you think it's amazing and the best thing you've ever done, and then a month or so later you look at it and pick out all the problems and hate it with every ounce of loathing in your body? That's how I feel about that painting. It has failed to live up to itself in posterity. It's the last big thing I did on my old computer and on my macbook it looks like ATTACK OF THE 80s and yikes. I want it gone from my life.
Painted in Photoshop 7 (best incarnation of PS ever) with a 4x6 Wacom Intuos 3 tablet

wow that was great. It was one of my favorites and I always wonder how you do it. So now I know.

Wow, wow, wow great tuturial!
I've always wondered about getting the values of a painting down in black and white before actually putting in the colour. Do you do that for all your paintings?
Thanks for this!

Yes, most of them, though with some I start out with a really clear idea of the colors I want, and skip the step.

Oh wow! Every time you post something, it makes me wanna draw something amazing, lmao.
And it's so fascinating to see your process to everything. So simple, and still so complex! Very amazing.

It's not at all complex, I'm like a caveman with a stylus, I just roar and tear my hair and beat at the tablet for hours and hours. This process makes me look way saner than I actually am. Nick says I get a "art look" where my eyes narrow and I bob my head back and forth like some kind of crazy hobo who's gone too long without a pick-me-up

ROFL. I do that same thing! I squint my eyes, and my head darts around to get different perspectives on the laptop screen. Probably why I have back problems. X]

I like your process! I'm bad and never do value thumbnails...>_> I will, though.
rocks, man. How do you paint so many rocks? I cringe at the thought of painting rocks.

I paint a lot of big fuzzy blobs...and then...slowly make them...better?

hahaha XD i tease, i tease. For some reason I can't stand trying to make rocks have rocky textures, but you've cleverly circumvented that.

I must be the only person ever who really likes the messy edge on paintings like that. :\
Though, I am a tard, I never thought about doing that digitally
anyway, this was a really nice tutorial, good insight into your work process. I just need to keep working at my painting skills... cuz a lot of this isn't stuff i'm unfamiliar with... but at the same time I can never achieve the look.

I like it on non-digital paintings, it looks cool

hmm, maybe it's the shrunken down part that makes it look cool to me then. I'm still gonna try it sometime here, and see if i like the effect myself. Then again... I don't do much for backgrounds, I just need to do backgrounds.

Definitely start doing backgrounds, they're oodles of fun, more fun for me than characters now

Oh, I love the art and the tutorial! Just one question, how many layers did you end up with? And would you like to share some brushes? ;D

thundercake In reply to MapleNeko [2008-06-05 00:55:00 +0000 UTC]
I generally paint on just one layer The only brushes I used were the default PS ones, the square oils and the small round brush for details
