Description
Yet again, I stumbled across a fantastic timeline on althistory wiki: 13 Fallen Stars. In it, the United States fall apart shortly after their formation, resulting in the 13 colonies becoming 6 independent states. The world after that point (of course) is much different. And one big difference is basicaly a very obvious one: The Louisiana Purchase never happened. For those of you who don't know: In 1803 the United States purchased the whole of Louisiana from Imperial France (which itself had just regained the territory after a roughly 40 year interlude of Spanish rule) for a value of roughly 250 Million dollars in today's value (which was a fucking cheaps buy if you ask me considering the US Louisiana Purchase DOUBLED the size of the US).In this timeline, two things change: Firstly (and most obviously) the US does not exist, so it can't purchase Louisiana. Secondly, the Empire of France doesn't exist either (due to the French Revolution did not succeed because the US revolution failed too in a sense), so Spain keeps controll of Louisiana.
Until the 1820's that is. French settlers (from French parts of Canada and in the form of fleeing French revolutionaries from the Kingdom of France), increasingly growing dissatisfied with Spanish rule, finaly revolting and creating an independent republic.
This is it's coat of arms.

Nice work. Hmm, hungarian city of Szolnok has similar coat of arms.

Nice work. Are the hanging banners the flag of Acadia (French Canada)? I recognize the Liberty Cap with the French Revolutionary cockade*, and I think the pelican is in the seal of the State of Louisiana. I'm not too sure about the source of the primitive-looking supporters, though.
*In those days, cockades were a popular way to denote nationality or unit on a uniform hat. The French in our timeline adapted the cockade as the first military aircraft roundel just before WWI, and they still use it today. At first, the British used the Union Jack; after a few friendly-fire incidents where their troops mistook the cross for the German cross, they adopted a colors-reversed version of the French roundel; after modifications, it too still adorns British military aircraft.

No, it's this TL's national flag of Louisiana. And the primitive looking man is Herculese, a popular motif of the French Revolutionary period.

Well we *did* only have one planning session but it lasted for several hours
Let's say that we're working on it about as hard as two people can when one has exam period and is chronically lazy while the other has two jobs, school and exam period coming up We try

Not sure yet. I'm currently desperately trying to find a date when we could take a look at the timeline again but it's proving to be rather hard with zalezsky
Our last attempt was yesterday but I had to leave suddenly and when I got back Dan decided there's no better time for a nap XD

As someone who lives in what was the Louisiana Purchase (South Dakota) it seems weird to think that at one point in time was under French control.

It was probably less "under French control" and more "oh look, a trading post".

Well in Louisiana you can still feel the French influence, can't you?

I mean there is a little. Some towns have French names including out state capital. But we have more of a Norwegian, German, Swedish and Native influence

And so the mystery of the Seven Stars of Louisiana continues. (Maybe we were once adherents of the Faith of the Seven?)

Ahem, sorry. Apparently the seven-starred flag was only used in an unofficial manner immediately following secession in January 1861. But... WHY SEVEN

Well I would reckon because the Confederation had seven states at the beginning?

Gouachevalier In reply to TiltschMaster [2016-12-09 20:08:33 +0000 UTC]
Possibly, though it was supposedly used prior to joining the Confederacy. So a "statement of intent" flag?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TiltschMaster In reply to Gouachevalier [2016-12-11 01:55:50 +0000 UTC]
Well Louisiana seceeded from the Union on Januara 26. 1861 and the flag with seven stars was used in Januaraay 1861 (at least that is what I was able to find just quickly researching on wikipedia). That would fit kind of perfectly.
