When I first came up with the Doctor Wii line up it started when I drew a picture of Mario as one of my favourite Doctors, number 4 Tom Baker.But there are some similarities between Tom Baker and Super Mario
Part of their character is there love of certain foods. (Mario loves Italian dishes, Tom Baker has a thing for sweets, mostly Jelly Babies)
They both tend to have to rescue their female friends from danger (and sometimes its the other way around
)They both warp from place to place in an odd way. (Mario uses warp pipes, the Doctor uses the TARDIS, disguised as a Police Telephone Box.)
Mario has quite an unkempt looking moustache, while the 4th Doctor was known for his head of curls.
They both wore hats
They are both very popular characters and both rival a later counterpart who's a rather skinny, spiky haired individual who's often hyperactive and obsessed with running. (I think we all know who I mean
)Okay, it's all a bit of a stretch for this one, but looking at Mario in Tom Bakers hat, coat and scarf I think just looks pretty cool anyway and it just seems to fit in my mind so there you go

If I could also say, Mario is the icon of his company, similar to how Tom Baker is the icon for Doctor Who.

Good point. Mario is generally the face of gaming in general and to a lot of people Tom Baker is still the face of Doctor Who. Though to a lot of newer fans David Tennant or Matt Smith are seen as the face of Who. Which is another reason to choose Sonic for 10, being the rival to Mario and Matt Smith as Guybrush Threepwood, since he is pretty much the mascot for point and click adventure games which style and humour fit more in with the much more 'eccentric' era of the series.
