Description Circe Bell is one of the main characters of Orias (one of the two stories I am currently in the progress of writing). She is the daughter of the Grand Witch of Change - Eve Bell. Having lived in the coven for all her life, she has developed a yearning to explore the “world outside of the forest”. Circe is also a talented and powerful mage(or witch in her case) whose natural element is fire.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 5 of the first draft in which Circe Bell explains to Cyrus (the main protagonist of the story) how she earned the nickname/title of “The Flame of The Forest”.

---

“Unlike all the other sisters, I am the only one who is born here. I am the first born of the coven and of this forest as well. This is all I have ever known. Over the years, I have had the yearning to escape from this forest, to see the outside world. I have tried but my mother and the forest never lets me go. I would run until my legs give out and I would still never get anywhere away from this place.”

Circe looks down at the forest below the overhang. Her demeanor changes to one that is of longing sadness.

“The frustration and anger would just build up continuously in me. I would strike out at everything and everyone. The sisters avoided me and my mother grew worried. Then there came a day where I couldn’t take it anymore and ran off into the forest without looking back. I kept running and my hands burned with fire from my rage. I ran till I collapsed to my knees, crying. I was shaking with fury and deep within me I felt it all pent up, waiting to be released. I let it go and the fire engulfed a large area of the forest around me in an inferno of pure hatred. An intense white light washed over me as I lost myself to blind anger. When I finally was able to see again, all that I saw around me was black. I had completely incinerated the forest around me till all that remained of the vibrant forest was black ash. I was crying but there was no more anger in me, I was crying for the forest, for what I did to it. In a moment of clarity I finally understood that I couldn't keep chasing the same path, I had to find others. On that day, the sisters gave me the nickname - the flame of the forest. It was meant to be mocking but I kept it because it served as a constant reminder, not of my tragedy, but of my reality. I am Circe Bell, The Flame of The Forest...”

Her voices trails before wavering and then falling silent. In the corner of Circe’s eye, a small tear wells up.

More information about the world of Orias, the story and it’s characters will be available on my website once it is up.

This piece was also part of my IB HL Visual Arts exhibition and was the final piece that I submitted. It was completed using Photoshop and a Wacom Intuos 4 Medium Tablet. All brushes used were my own custom presets.

Easter eggs/Side note: her arm bands were inspired by Ahsoka Tano’s from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and her necklace would seem familiar to you if you’ve read X-23: Target X. It’s all just a little tribute to two female characters that I hold dear.

I hope you like this piece! Please leave a comment about what you think below. You should also be able to purchase this piece as a print on the dA store if you so desire.

Thank you!

The characters and the story are still a work in progress and do not represent the final product.

Damn girl you have talent! I love how you incorporated the fire, not only in the foreground, but in the background as well. As an artist, I am always horrible at creating realistic textures, and you did amazing. You were also able to make the fire look like it is coming out of her finger rather than fingers on fire. Finally, I enjoy the determination evident in her eyes, even though there is not much detail in her eyes. This is just a style suggestion, maybe make the reflection of the fire more obvious against her face, so it looks more realistic. Little details like that can make a world of difference.

This piece is very intriguing to me. I can tell that you put a lot of time and effort into it, but it's a little lackluster. That may be why it hasn't been receiving a "lot of love lately". Hopefully, though, I can point out some things for you that will help it get up there (:

Alright, so the first thing I notice right off the bat are the eyes. Or eye. Which is a good thing. They're definitely the focal point. But this is bad, as well, because it causes the viewer to look more intently in that area, and you've hidden a lot of the things that are going on there. Personally, I would love to see a little more of the other eye. Also, the ear that is showing is waaay too small. Her lips are rather bright, but it may be your intention to be showing lipstick, since her eye makeup is so heavy. The nose could use more definition to stand in competition with the eyes and mouth, I think.

Moving down, her outfit is very detailed, but perhaps a bit much. With so much of the focus on her hands and face, it is distracting to be the contrasting green. If you could dull that a bit (especially over the bright gold) you would have a huge difference. Being nit-picky, I would also say that the bands on her arms are not quite the same size.

With her hands- the one that is on the left of the image bothers me quite a bit. Her elbow appears to be bent upwards, but the flame has a swoop going down. This will be confusing to a viewer who will assume that the flame is similarly on the fingertips like the other hand. unless her arm is broken, it doesn't seem quite possible. Try flipping that flame swoosh around. On the hand that is more visible, try adjusting it so that the fingers are still viewable through the flames. If you stare at a log in the fire, you are still able to see most of it clearly. It currently looks like her fingertips are melting off.

The last thing I can critique is the background. Is there a bonfire back there, too? With the level of detail you applied in the foreground, I would love to see the same effort behind her.

I know this sounds like a lot, but this really is a very good piece with a lot of potential. Don't give up on it! I hope to see an updated version soon (:
