Description
THISΒ SECTION HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE FEBRUARY 2013. It will, however, remain as documentation of deviantART's progress.PS. Warning: Large file.
The original Sta.sh update post can be found here.
We now have confirmation that they have no intention to go back to the old upload method... What a shame.
For any moderators or administrators who are reading this, please scroll down and read 'The Principle' and 'Problem Summary' respectively. It's all been written in plain black and green for your convenience.
The Principle:
As a community, DeviantArt users should be given the right to choose whether or not they participate in an experiment.
The Story:
On October 16th, 2012,Β DeviantArt implemented a new upload system riddled with bugs and a hideously out-of-theme colour scheme and forced over 3000 users to use the new system without any prior notification or warning. The action taken against these users was entirely uncalled for as many people lost the ability to upload from older computers and mobile devices. Furthermore, these users were forced into a test that they could not opt out of. People who lost their ability to upload altogether have gone for almost a month, waiting for problems to be addressed and their voices have not yet been heeded in a satisfactory way.
The Point:
When DeviantArt loses its community, it loses money and support! Whether someone has a free account or not is entirely irrelevant. People may have been premium members in the past, intend to become premium members sometime in the future or have purchased prints/points/otherwise that have somehow given back to DeviantArt. Everyone is a potential customer and DeviantArt needs to know that we won't stand idly by while they turn this sadistic behaviour into a habit.
DeviantArt users should be given the right to choose, regardless of whether or not they prefer the new theme!
For the convenience of the DeviantArt staff, I have compiled a list of the problems with Sta.sh which will be updated by yours truly as more complaints come in.
Problem Summary:
- The transition to a glaring white and pale blue background. I really do wish that you guys would make Sta.sh uniform with the rest of the site. After all, I think that a colour scheme inspired by nature is far more befitting of an artist community than a colour scheme that closely resembles a mental hospital.
- The upload process still feels messy and is not user-friendly in the least. The user has to look left and right to make sure they're filling in all of the required information. It's much easier to just scroll down, fill in the boxes and tick the circles/squares. Trying to make the Sta.sh upload page a preview of what the final upload will look like was a cute idea but it's not practical.
- Every time you go to update information (or replace a file) on a deviation, it asks you for the category again. It's extremely annoying when all you're trying to do is perform a minor edit because often times, you have to go back to your gallery just to figure out what category you stuck it under previously.
- Users are unable to upload pictures/literature en masse, and many people who make a living off of art suffer greatly for it as their time is constantly impeded upon. (Even with the ability to submit en masse to Sta.sh, users STILL have to go to Sta.sh and submit each picture to DeviantArt one-by-one. It's extremely tedious!)
- Sta.sh lags far more than the older upload method and doesn't appear to work with slower internet connections. Also, a lot of things are hidden under drop-down menus which makes uploading take longer. ChelseaWhiteArt , TheRanter1 , A-Lucky-Mutt
- Sta.sh usually takes the name of the image file instead of allowing the artist to name it what they choose. Many people would rather name the deviation first. Ask-GTM
- The pop-ups on the side are really distracting (and take longer to load). If you insist on keeping them then at least allow the user to toggle these on and off. Ask-GTM
- You can't sort files alphabetically by name using Sta.sh. AlphaOmega2k
- Users receive the error: "SORRY, STAS SHALAEV IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE IN YOUR REGION" then are unable to log in afterward. AlphaOmega2k

I think we should make a petition so we can keep the old submit system. I don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a try.

If we could get enough people behind that then maybe it would work... but frankly, I don't understand how 2100+ angry emoticons (not to mention the 600+ sad ones) dwarfing the 300 odd love/joy ones doesn't already speak volumes about what the users want. There are literally NINE times as many people who hate the page and that makes the statistic thus: Only ONE IN TEN people likes the page. The vast majority hate it.
But guess what?
That's not going to stop them from launching it.
They think that hating something new is normal and can't seem to figure out why people aren't piping down. The reason they're not piping down is because the page is an eyesore (I seriously want to know who designed it) and because for a good group of people, the page simply DOES NOT WORK. It has not worked since its introduction and people have already had to go for a month without being able to upload new pictures. For a website whose sole purpose is uploading and sharing art, that's just unacceptable.

I've noticed that too.
Isn't it funny?
And here I was talking to my friend the other day about how they forced people to use Sta.sh because they know that no one would've switched over to it willingly.
I wonder why.

Was that because of Sta.sh or because DeviantArt was down for maintenance?

Actually, if it makes you feel any better, DeviantArt has probably been overloading their servers while trying to fix their bugs.
There have been points where I haven't been able to access DeviantArt either.

Sad thing about fanfiction.net is that it doesn't allow visual works.
Mind you, for writers, that's the least of their worries.

I'm not sure you want them though.

SheezyArt (Though if you use Internet Explorer, forget it.)
Elfwood (Original artwork only.)
Nabyn (Requires an invite.)
Weasyl (Same as Nabyn.)
FurAffinity (If you can tolerate the 'lax' atmosphere. Very little is done to enforce rules around there.)

I've had this problem, bare with my I'm tech illiterate. I will once in a blue moon submit little simple animations. No matter what category I select it will not allow me to submit the animation. I have no idea what the issue is, could be a sta.sh problem or god knows what else. Really I don't care what the actual issue is because I know I'm not the only person running into huge amounts of lag, and these random little bugs in this new eyesore on the submit page. I just wish they would change it back, its getting really annoying and its been there for a month. I'm tired of looking at this thing.

I agree with you entirely. That's why I started this thing to begin with. (Please feel free to share it. The more voices we can get, the better.)
For the sake of clarity, can I please ask what format your animations are? (.GIF, .SWF, etc?)

Personally, my problem is when I try to submit it tells me I need to agree to the Terms of Service first, which I did when I activated my account. I think you should put that in your description also.

I actually find Stash a bit more orderly then the last one... but uploading my stories on my old computer has been a bit of a hassle. You really need a new fangled computer to use this system, so I think deviants should be given the option of which they prefer to use. Just ask once, then give the option to switches in our settings if we change our mind later.

Tinker-Jet In reply to spotty-bee [2012-11-09 00:35:17 +0000 UTC]
As you can plainly see, my first point under 'The Principle' is that we should be given a choice. This change has broken so many upload opportunities, it's not even funny. Normally when something 'new' comes out, people complain for a week or two and then it all goes quiet. Well, it's almost been a month now and people are still complaining in DROVES. It's no surprise. The upload process is so much a central part of the DeviantArt Community, however, no one's being listened to and comments are being deleted.
As for my problem, it takes more clicks to upload and the saving - for a lot of people - is unnecessary and laggy. For those not familiar with DeviantArt, the entire set-up is an unnecessarily steep learning curve and it's even more useless if it doesn't fill people's needs. It certainly doesn't serve mine or I would've used it much sooner. I've been a DeviantArt user since 2003 and as it is right now, I need DeviantArt in perfect working order in December or I'll be forced to become a Premium Member on my other account to duck the change. As you can imagine, I'd rather not reward bad behaviour. The whiteness of the page alone gives me a migraine and makes me see sun spots. Why something as simple as interface COLOUR hasn't been addressed yet is way beyond me.
Frankly, I don't know why people aren't outraged simply out of principle... that we WEREN'T given a choice in the matter and pretty soon, this will be a forced standard... if it isn't already.
