Mistmane was born a Longma (a winged horse with dragon scales from Chinese Mythology Longma - Wikipedia ). Like in the show, she was a powerful mage and was regarded as kind and beautiful. She leaves home, studies alongside other great mages all the while remaining humble.

Her closest Sable Spirit has always been by her side, but was unable to join her and other mages due to her weak magic. While Sable Spirit and Mistmane have always been friends, Sable Spirit has felt jealous over Mistmane’s beauty and magical strength. In a fit of jealousy and desperation, Sable Spirit summons Accord, the spirit/draconequus of order and harmony, and begs for power, to which Accord asks for her heart in return. (In this case, heart was metaphorical, he took her emotion, her soul)

Although Accord is the spirit of order and harmony, he is not to be trusted fully. He is known to twist deals and promises.

Sable Spirit asked for power, what she imagined was stronger magic, like Mistmane. Instead, Accord turned her into a draconequus and she became the spirit of famine and misery.

Time passes, Sable Spirit finds as a draconequus, she has more power than she could’ve dreamed. So she declares herself empress and begins taking over villages and towns, creating for herself an empire to rule.

Mistmane hears word of this, unaware this empress is her friend. She goes to confront this empress, and is met with the hateful eyes of her old friend Sable Spirit. The two battle long and hard, eventually Mistmane wins.

Sable Spirit, who by now is exhausted and in tears, tells her about Accord. How she’d summoned him and asked him to give her power, which is how she became what she was.

Mistmane summons Accord and demands he to turn Sable Spirit back. Accord refuses, stating rather sternly, ‘A deal was struck. Your friend wished for power and in exchange I took her heart, I cannot go back on it’. To which Mistmane continues her demands.

Accord laughs, stating how entertaining this has all been for him. Looking at Mistmane he offers to fix everything, in return, however, unlike Sable Spirit’s deal, in exchange for Mistmane’s beauty.

The deal is struck, very thing is returns to what it once was. As for Mistmane, she is no longer a Longma, instead she is a draconequus, she is the spirit of beauty and peace.

Life goes on, Mistmane and Sable Spirit repair their friendship, Mistmane adapts to life as a draconequus, things seem to look up. Then Mistmane joins the pillars and disappears with them, returning to find everything has changed.
