It doesn't work well for hair, unless the hair is defined well. Try checking out one of my other tutorials....
Extracting the Pen Tool [link]
It works much better for hair. Also depending on the background image and colors you could try using File/Selection/Select Color Range (I think thats what it's called ) That works well with monotone backgrounds.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

I haven't had the chance to use this technique yet, but I think that it'll be very useful and helpful. Thanks for doing this! It's tutorials like this that help all of us to become better artists. Greatly appreciated.

Well, I'll be sure to test it out and let you know how it goes, once I have some free time. Just a curious question: couldn't you use the Magnetic Lasso Tool to do the same thing? Or is that only an Illustrator thing? Of course, then again, the ML Tool would probably pick up some of the shadow lines along with the object. Anyway, tell me what you think.

Sorry for the late reply.... Yes you could do similar work with the magnetic lasso but it would pick up some odd shadows along with the rest of it. With the extraction tool you have more control as well as the knowledge that if you mess up you can erase without having to Alt+lasso to get rid of mistakes.

Hmm...good point! That would explain why you didn't use the magnetic lasso in the tutorial! Actually, I've proven your point on a few occassions. I tried using it on an image once, and it gave me parts of the background that weren't easy to erase, if at all. Had I known your method, it probably would've come out perfect! Thanks for the correction!
