I totally believe the two can be merged into one glorious headcanon. With bioengineered animals going against aliens and Alek pointing out to Deryn nearly every mission, "oh God that has to be an abomination" while Deryn's still trying to wrap her brain around the beasties-that-can't-reproduce versus beasties-that-obviously-can-WHAT-JUST-HAPPENED while Barlow is secretly cackling and brewing up new beasties from alien ideas.
Also, Bovril speaks alien.
