Number seven in my DANCE! series of Avatar fanart! My foray into villain territory continues! Trust Azula to manage to look predatory even while dancing...(Azula has been incredibly difficult to find a dance reference photo for. Finally, I found this gorgeous shot of a tribal dance of some sort--I think it's a hunting dance--and I managed to see Azula in it. This was a major feat, as you can see by the original picture. My friends have demanded I post a link to it, because, LOL. [link] )
And what's she dancing to, you ask? Her own beat. <3

I wa just thinking Azula would probably be really good at traditional Indian dancing, with the emphasis on drums and such. And here is a picture that reminds me of Indian dancing!

You know, this painting reminds me of the ending of the short story Prey by Richard Matheson, after Amelia has become possessed by the spirit in the Zuni hunting fetish she just burned in the oven. Here goes: "She carried the knife into the living room, took off her bathrobe and danced a dance of hunting, of the joy of hunting, of the joy of the impending kill."
Amazing and intense portrayal of a fearful character! Well done.

By the way, even if she is Fire Nation royalty and highborn, it would not surprise me in the least if Azula ever went out hunting at least once with just her firebending skills, sandals, and uh, minimal clothing on.

It's too twisted and cramped for Azula, and the hand towards herself shows a certain emotion of questioning dismay that doesn't suit her. Azula is more of a graceful, elongated fighter, as seen in this picture [link] and excellently shown in this GIF [link]

I would try to defend myself by pointing out how hunched and cramped her fighting style becomes towards the end of the series, in her madness, but this was drawn long before that. Ah, well.

I am a fan of the DANCE series as a whole, but I think you've really managed to capture the personality here! I can't help but see it as a slightly younger shot, for some reason, but even so -- it's all Azula.

Though, I have to admit, she looks pretty menacing and evil in that pose... then again, since WHEN does she NOT look scary and evil? EVen when she was getting ready for BED she looked ohsodevious and EVIL. =]

She's an alarming young lady, that Azula. She has this perpetual...poise to her, except it tends to feel only so much like social poise, and the rest of it like the poise of a scorpion before it strikes...

Absolutely! I've got pictures planned for Mai solo, Mai with Ty Lee, and Mai with Zuko. It just remains to be seen if I finish them all, but the solo at least should be guaranteed eventually.
