Thanks. This is something that I do okay on when working from reference, but I tend to confuse myself and get lost when working from imagination.

You give great advice. I especially appreciate your notes on light and color (I also liked the thing about kids shapes- but I'm extra fond of the color tips). You are just brilliant with color, and there is so much to learn from your process.

Thanks for sharing!

Ohhhhh thank you!!! MORRRRRRRRRRRRRE please! I've been trying to really consider all the different light sources in color lately. It's really really useful that you showed what you see a lot.

Great explanation.
The best painter to study when it comes to ambient and reflected light is Joaquin Sorolla. Every single one of his paintings (and most especially the beach paintings) is a masterful lesson in color and light.

oh my god, Sorolla is such a winner. I think the only reason I don't look exclusively at his work is that the majority of it is quite warm, and I have an uncontrollable affinity for cooler palettes. But that one painting of his of the syph orphans at the beach is one of my all-time favourite paintings.

Glad to see another Sorolla fan
True, most of his paintings are lit by the harsh spanish sun and he uses all kinds of warms colors that would be considered garish if it was anyone else but him using them. The way he uses oranges, pinks and purples never fails to amaze.
I have two "go-to" paintings when I'm looking for reference on reflected light which are these two : [link]
I love how you can find all sorts of colors on the boys' skins, greens, blues, purples. There's reflected light basically coming from every direction, yet he still manages to make it look harmonious.
Tiny details like that one perfectly placed stroke of light blue on the boy's left index finger in the first painting always leave me speechless.

Anyway, yeah, good lesson

Your understanding of color is something I'd really love to tap into. I always look to your work as strong examples of color manipulation, and small little 'tutorials' like this are very nice to see * u* thank you.

For this piece I used exclusively one brush: [link] it's "73" in the left column, 4th from the bottom.

And the comment about consummate reflectologist is incredibly amusing. <3

Hahaha, that's definitely one of those things people slap onto art to make it look instantly awesome. Random blue reflected light, whoo!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to javawombat [2012-01-10 05:55:50 +0000 UTC]

I mean, it's awesome that people are getting some reflected light in there. It means they're (maybe subconsciously) thinking about contrasting colors and pretty evolved lighting, but still, the blue-everywhere-ness can be pretty nonsensical.
