Description
Guy Gardner Green Lantern+ US AgentGuy Walker is one in a long line of legacy heroes to wield the Green Flame of Ego. Originally, 4F Alan Rogers in the early part of World War 2 was singled out for an experiment to create super soldiers. A team of scientists led by Rex Stark studied what they determined to be an alien artifact, despite its uncanny resemblance to an Terran lantern. The team thought to try to imbue the energy into a soldier to create a super soldier and the process worked, but was determined that it could not be repeated, as Alan needed to recharge his energy with the lantern every 24 hours. Rex invented a ring that Alan wore to help him control the energy. Calling himself Captain Lantern, Alan fought bravely in the war until he was lost for a few decades after his last mission. The line of successors to the Green Flame include Alan's wartime partner Kyle "Bucky" Barnes who later became the Emerald Warrior, and the grand-daughter of an early test subject of the Green Flame tests, Jade Patriot (Jennifer-Lynne Bradley), though there were others.
However, this line of succession did not sit well with some in the US government, as few of the Green Flame successors held the loyalist view they coveted for a power source they viewed as their own. At the same time, a splinter sect of the Guardians of Ego, the creators of the "lantern" found by the US government in the early 20th century, sought a warrior in their police force in the sector of Earth that they imbued with their Green Flame of Ego energy as an official Green Nova corps officer.
Enter Guy Gardner. A loyal Marine, with a bit of a mean streak, was nonetheless selected by the committee in the pentagon. It was during the Crisis of the Infinite Gauntlet that rogue faction of Guardians were also looking for an agent. They sensed the experiments the US was doing with Guy with their energy, and decided Guy was a capable candidate. So they presented him with an official Lantern of the Green Flame. Guy, wishing to emulate the legendary Captain Lantern created a ring with his ego to help him focus his energies.
Guy is an agent of the Green Novas in the Earth sector, but his loyalty first is to the United States. He has the suitable ego to control the Green Flame (even though other controllers of the Green Flame believed they used will, it is actually powered by ego... like the home planet of the Guardians).
meta-backstory. Guy Gardner and John Walker are a perfect pair to combo, as moonnightfan101 rightly pointed out, they are both "violent and douchey versions of their" predecessors. It was working on his origin, which necessarily had to mention his predecessor that I got the idea for a great line of Green Flame of Ego legacy characters, starting with Alan Rogers. This is another amalgam from the JLA:WC So West Coast Avengers and Justice League International.
